What did we learn yesterday?

406

There’s a question I have heard over a long time from football people, “What did we learn today?”  It is usually asked by a coach who wants his player(s)  to figure out the change he wants to make.  So what did we learn yesterday?

If any doubt remains that the current Celtic squad are very effective as 3-5-2 and relatively ineffective as 4-2-3-1, it can only be from someone who was on Twitter most of the game.

Gordon Strachan endured some torrid criticisms as Celtic manager.  I am sure this informed his pre-match comments on the “Twitterati’s” verdict on the tactical deployment against Ferencvaros.  Gordon assured us Neil Lennon knows the players better than anyone, especially online fans, and he picked his strongest team to start on Wednesday and again on Sunday.

On any level, this is true.  Neil Lennon knows his squad better than any of us, just has Gordon did in his day.  Both men are also tactically better versed than most of us could ever hope to be.  But the sight of two central defenders making rampaging runs at different times late in the game against Motherwell, surely will convince the final doubters: three at the back, two up front and leave the middle five fluid.

Is it not possible to respect and be very grateful to our manager whilst also having an understanding of the shit he has had to put up with in Scotland but also to believe that at this moment we could have a more tactically aware manager to replace him.It doesn’t mean that anyone suggesting a change no longer respects Neil or that his standing as a Celtic legend would diminish. I think we should replace the manager but I still think he is a Celtic legend …football changes and sometimes managers are left behind. If Neil stays in place I will be behind him and will be delighted for him to lead us to 10 in a row.

Think the point of this place is to welcome debate/comment/agreement/disagreement about the thing we all love Celtic.

Some with big ego’s on here though – debate is healthy….and need not be seen as a personal attack….

My great uncle Jimmy Delaney made his debut in 1934. Won the Empire Exhibition Trophy in 1938. Signed for Manchester United in 1946. Why are you asking me this AKBW?

I thought the point of this site was to redress the balance of a very anti-Celtic media.

Too many, under the banner of `everyone is entitled to an opinion` seem to think it is to add to that imbalance.

Redress the balance of the MSM? Yes of course. But does that mean we must agree on everything?

My own opinion of the present Board is that they are a bunch of Tory charlatans, now I know a good few on here will disagree with that and I’m happy to accept that we are entitled to our opinions without name calling and inflated egos….

  17. DELANEYS DUNKY on 31ST AUGUST 2020 3:47 PM

Are you that British Unionist troll JHB in disguise?

    ——-

You make a good point about trolls/trollish behaviour on here (especially recently). For example, in the last blog JHB made a post accusing me of ‘virtue signalling’ in relation to something I posted yesterday:

‘Some of the criticism of the manager since Wednesday has been very personal and abusive. Neil risked his life to play for and manage Celtic and for a few of us that leads to an automatic instinct to defend him when he is being attacked.’

Nothing particularly controversial there (indeed it was part of longer post which was trying to defuse some of the tension in the blog which was making it a toxic environment for everyone).

So JHB has accused me of being a liar/virtue signalling which obviously i’m going to respond to in the way it deserves. Now his piece of shit stirring was in an otherwise seemingly reasonable post so when i responded to him ONENIGHTINLISBON took his side.

Now myself and ONENIGHTINLISBON had a bit of a chat and it ends up we respect each other’s views (his post in the last blog is excellent btw). But if either myself or ONENIGHTINLISBON hadn’t been willing to have a discussion in good faith we could have easily ended up insulting each other. All because of JHB’s post which had a go at me in a sleekit manner.

This is classic trolling behaviour – trying to conflate two different POV ( extreme criticism of Neil with legitimate concerns about the team etc) which will then lead to regular posters fighting with each other. Job done from the trolls point of view.

It is no surprise that JHB didn’t respond to me – I doubt he will but if he does i will take me about five seconds to destroy him because i know exactly what he is. Perhaps it is because I suspect I am slightly younger than the general demographic on here that I am slightly more aware of how trolls behave that I can spot them more easily than others but it’s definitely something to be aware of.

The point is my friend that we are all Celtic supporters and want the same thing. How we achieve that is where some of us vary in opinion.

The issue i have with this place is that certain posters are too happy to call “Hun” when someone puts forward a valid opinion. This then descends into name calling the kids in primary one at my local school would be proud of..

  19. “….simply saying, “This is my opinion” does not preclude a connected statement from being dead wrong. It still baffles me that some feel those four words somehow give them carte blanche to spout batshit oratory or prose. ”

  21. Amex Stadium, home of Brighton & Hove Albion has a capacity of 30k. This weekend 2500 will be allowed to attend a game there – about 8% of capacity.

We cannot get SNP Holyrood to approve 700 people (1.1%) in our 60k stadium v Motherwell, although we have been at the forefront of Covid preparation & have state of the art Covid testing facilities on site.

Instead they let Ibrox be the first, home fans only of course…and to add insult to injury, our next opponents Ross County, get a similar advantage when they play us.

Par for this current Scottish course.

I agree and it’s something that we should all be aware as it can make the blog a depressing place.

  24. Our points per game ratio and goal difference ratio is pretty similar to that of Sevco. Do CQNers feel that Sevco supporters will be as disappointed in their team right now as many of our support seem to be with ours?

I know Sevco have not just been knocked out of the CL but our support were quite unhappy before the Ferencvaros game.

I always find that the unique angle footage shows just how good professional football is…..even in Scotland !

  27. what kind of defender is Duffy other than his areal capability and toe to toe battles. Celtic play high up the pitch , will his lack of pace weaken us? Playing for Brighton and Ireland, I’d imagine, would be deep defending in compact space.

I’m ok with that as long as we have pace to cover – eg Ayer has pace – if he leaves we must replace with quick defender. (or play frimpong as sweeper – kidding of course but he is the fastest I’ve ever seen! ).

Get a left back once Boli goes on loan or sold.
