What did we learn yesterday?

406

There’s a question I have heard over a long time from football people, “What did we learn today?”  It is usually asked by a coach who wants his player(s)  to figure out the change he wants to make.  So what did we learn yesterday?

If any doubt remains that the current Celtic squad are very effective as 3-5-2 and relatively ineffective as 4-2-3-1, it can only be from someone who was on Twitter most of the game.

Gordon Strachan endured some torrid criticisms as Celtic manager.  I am sure this informed his pre-match comments on the “Twitterati’s” verdict on the tactical deployment against Ferencvaros.  Gordon assured us Neil Lennon knows the players better than anyone, especially online fans, and he picked his strongest team to start on Wednesday and again on Sunday.

On any level, this is true.  Neil Lennon knows his squad better than any of us, just has Gordon did in his day.  Both men are also tactically better versed than most of us could ever hope to be.  But the sight of two central defenders making rampaging runs at different times late in the game against Motherwell, surely will convince the final doubters: three at the back, two up front and leave the middle five fluid.

You’re right that in comparison to what’s down there we SHOULD be getting £20m but I just think that given the Armstrong precedent and the general level of payments for SPL players, we’d do well to be getting £20m.

Having said that, if Leeds have put in an opening bid of £20m for Kent…..

I would take Sly Sports News Channel, Rumoured Reports, with a pinch of Salt.

Why, because hardly any of them become true, in other words rumoured p*sh

nonsense, being branded around by the 10% Men (Agents) So don’t believe

everything you both here via the said source it’s normally BS.

Re Dunfermline game , we were down 2-0 ,3-1 4-2 then won 5-4 what a game

Shortly after we went to Easter road and won 5-3 , what would our present support say about our defending then ,,,,

    You are welcome.

It may well have been icy at Love Street but I don`t think it was foggy .Possibly one of the replays featured fog, though as I do remember some incredibly foggy experiences from those times.

    Goodnight all.

  5. lets all do the huddle on

    I’d rather have Romeu

    A tough tackling midfielder

i wonder how many of our european opponents say before a game how scared they are about facing an all scottish midfield

I could be greedy and desire Alphonso Davies or someone of his ilk for our left wing back role, in a 352 formation.

  7. *** CQN PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2020-21 ***

RESULTS FROM GAME #6 – CELTIC 3 MOTHERWELL 0 (FORREST, AJETI, JULLIEN)

Back to winning ways although it did take a wee while for us to get going. And, as I suggested when putting up the results from the Ferencvaros game, and I quote “…Going forward, isn’t the answer just as simple as “play 3-5-2”…..”. We did that yesterday in the 2nd half and what a difference. Suddenly Calmac was appearing all across the midfield and running the show, Frimpong (when he appeared) and Forrest were providing much better width. And whilst Klimala should have scored at least 1, he and Barkas did show the old ‘natural strikers instincts’ in their movements up front, doing things they’ve done all their life rather than tried to learn new skills over the previous week.

So, onto the votes and also some other stats seeing as that’s Month 1 of the season at an end.

Thanks to the 55 who voted and the numbers cast for each player are as follows (with my own choices asterisked) –

    Barkas: 0

    Elhamed: 1

    Jullien: 9

    Ajer*: 14

    Taylor: 0

    Forrest: 32

    Brown: 2

    McGregor*: 50

    Ntcham: 2

    Elyounoussi: 0

    Christie: 13

    Klimala: 3

    Frimpong*: 25

    Ajeti: 7

So the players receiving points for the Motherwell game are –

    McGregor – 5 points

    Forrest – 4 points

    Frimpong – 3 points

    Ajer – 2 points

    Christie – 1 point

And the overall points table is now as follows –

    1st – Christie – 15 points

    2nd – McGregor – 13 points

    3rd – Elyounoussi – 10 points

    4th – Ntcham – 9 points

    5th – Frimpong and Taylor – 7 points

    7th – Ajer and Edouard – 5 points

9th – Ajeti, Barkas, Elhamed and Forrest – 4 points

    13th – Bitton – 3 points

    14th – Jullien – 2 points

15th – Bain, Bolingoli, Brown, Dembele, Klimala – 0 points

    *Player Of The Month*

We played 6 games during August, winning 4, drawing 1 and losing 1.

We scored 17 goals and conceded 4.

Our top goalscorer is Edouard with 4, Ajeti, Christie, Elyounoussi and Jullien have each chipped in with 2 apiece. The other 5 have come from Forrest, Frimpong, Klimala, Taylor and an own goal.

Only 2 players have played the full 6 games, Jullien and McGregor.

19 different players have appeared during those 6 games

Based on the total votes across all 6 games, in 3rd place we have Greg Taylor with 96 votes. In 2nd place it is Callum McGregor with 135 votes. And the PLAYER OF THE MONTH for August, with 137 votes is RYAN CHRISTIE.

We now have everybody’s favourite, “International Week” but Celtic return to action at 3pm on Saturday 12th September when we travel to Ross County.

    Hail Hail!

  8. I think we could also do with adding at least one more winger to the squad.

I would be dissapointed to see Ntcham go, personally think he is a very good player

  9. Possible Celtic opponents in tomorrow’s Q3 EL draw …

KuPS (FIN) or Slovan Bratislava (SVK)

Riga (LVA) or Tre Fiori (SMR)

    Sileks (MKD) or Drita (KOS)

Hoping for a home draw ?

  10. FANADPATRIOT

    Remember though

Back in the day a typical team lined up

    2-3-5

Designed to entertain and score goals. Defending then wasn’t an art…it was more an afterthought

Old team line ups were like

    Simpson, Craig & Gemmell

    Murdoch, McNeill & Clark

Johnstone, Wallace, Chalmers, Auld & Lennox

They lined up as you said/sang it

  11. Jobo

    My selections anyway:

    1 McGreggor

    2.Elhamed

    3 Forrest.

You know my views on this 10 in a row thing.

It has got me into bother for suggesting it is no big deal.

Only one club playing in Scotland today who has won 9 in a row. Celtic.

Why the great desire to beat Jock Stein’s record?

I think the whole 10 in a row charade is justifying the same club huns argument.

Not that I won’t be ecstatic when we win the league this season.

Would prefer a European trophy though.

Very Funny 31003, I’ve noticed you have read through my last posts.

If my memory serves me right the song was dedicated to Cyril Regis

back in the Seventies, did he not play for the West London Club based

in White City named QPR & He went on to play for Royal Madrid of Spain

Yes? 31003. & The said song appeared on Top of The Pops back in the

My dear uncle who recently passed away (88 yrs old and ST holder till the end) was a real football fan. He loved and lived for football. He took me to so many games when my dad, for work reasons, wasn’t able. He took me to my very first floodlit game, rangers v Motherwell at Ibrox 1961. I remember he told me we were going to see a REAL football team…Motherwell. It was a SC replay in front of an 80,000 crowd. 5-2 to the Ancell Babes who had some very talented players:Pat Quinn, Ian St John, Pat Delaney(any relation DD?), Willie Hunter, Bert McCann, Bobby Roberts…how can I remember those names? We were in amongst the Well fans. Thank goodness! We were allowed to cheer the goals…

They’d have been celebrating scoring since they were in primary school. Old habits, die hard and I like seeing them delighted about scoring. It shows it means something to them.
