What did we learn yesterday?

406

There’s a question I have heard over a long time from football people, “What did we learn today?”  It is usually asked by a coach who wants his player(s)  to figure out the change he wants to make.  So what did we learn yesterday?

If any doubt remains that the current Celtic squad are very effective as 3-5-2 and relatively ineffective as 4-2-3-1, it can only be from someone who was on Twitter most of the game.

Gordon Strachan endured some torrid criticisms as Celtic manager.  I am sure this informed his pre-match comments on the “Twitterati’s” verdict on the tactical deployment against Ferencvaros.  Gordon assured us Neil Lennon knows the players better than anyone, especially online fans, and he picked his strongest team to start on Wednesday and again on Sunday.

On any level, this is true.  Neil Lennon knows his squad better than any of us, just has Gordon did in his day.  Both men are also tactically better versed than most of us could ever hope to be.  But the sight of two central defenders making rampaging runs at different times late in the game against Motherwell, surely will convince the final doubters: three at the back, two up front and leave the middle five fluid.

Ooft! Bert McCann and Ian St John played in the Eng v Scot 9-3 at Wembley…

Of course big Frank Haffey got the blame….

I thought it was Peter Lawwell’s fault. In those days he only had salt on his driveway…

    Only kidding Peter…

  2. My memory is Cyril Regis and Laurie Cunningham strutting their stuff for WBA

Cunningham then went to Real Madrid I think

I also think I read somewhere that Laurie Cunningham is no longer with us

If only we had spied Morrison and Hepburn before BM …

Something badly wrong with the youth set up when we start losing players like this.

Plus the fact that we have seem to have no reserve CF beyond JA.

And before that it was TW who has had his issues over the years.

We have people in the U20’s / Reserves winning Irish age group player of the year competitions for fun and the best we can offer them is a loan deal down south.

And we seem to be buying EU stiffs for £2 / £3mill and then losing them after a year to anyone who will take them.

Young JF is a shining light in a coal cellar at the moment.

  4. WeeBobbyCollins, Bhoy you have got a few moons ago, a long time warp past memory.

I can not remember that far back, as regards to old Motherwell Teams. However, I

remember a past top goal scorer for them, (Motherwell) named Willie Petigrew.

    Remember Him?

    Agreed

League Cup and dare I say it the SCOTTISH cup should be used by us to bleed the young guns

I have a good mate in Stuttgart who follows Bayern home and away. He keeps a keen interest in Bayern youth teams. Say’s that Liam Morrison is a stand out in his youth team. München or Lennoxtown? Dream move for young Liam. Hope he does Scotland proud.

  9. First Celtic game attended was against Hibs 29/12/1956 at Easter road a draw 3-3 I always thought the idea was to score goals ,

I never thought the defence was rubbishRather the attack was brilliant; changed days indeed HH

Yeah, that is typical Scotland Supporters for you, when things start to go pear shaped.

We will blame the GoalKeeper, he will be the Scapegoat.

I remember when Scotland played Brasil back in the 1982 World Cup & The Brasilian

Player sent his guided missle free kick into the postage stamp area of the Scotland

Goal Frame, & a lot of Scotland Supporters where blaming Alan Rough (Roughie) for

AKBW1888…Willie Pettigrew I never saw, though obviously I know of him…in fact, I missed a lot of players from being abroad when there was no internet…Dalglish I saw only a couple of times, Charlie Nicholas I saw once…I was away from ’68 to ’88, returning only on a very few occasions…

Yes. Patrick James Delaney of Motherwell was the son of Celtic, Manchester United and Derry City legend James Delaney.

Patrick is my mammy’s cousin. 👍🍀💚

Always wondered why Celtic or theme never made a bid for Willie Pettigrew

The boy was prolific for at least a couple of seasons

I think he might have scored a brace against us then thems straight after

  14. weebobbycollins on

George Connelly I saw very little of too, though I do remember when, as a youngster, he came on at half-time and did a keepie-up session. I think that was a friendly game where big Jock played a very experimental team…Tontine? Anyone?

I also think I read somewhere that Laurie Cunningham is no longer with us

Yeah 31003, you are right it was Laurie Cunningham who played for Real Madrid.

Because wee played Real Madrid back in the early eighties (1980’s) & Johnny

Doyle scored a good headed goal against them @ CP we won that night 2 – 0

However we lost the return match in Spain 3 – 0 & Real Madrid progressed

while we where knocked out of Europe, & Laurie Cunningham scored two of

Real Madrid’s goals against us. Anyway, bless the late Laurie Cunningham &

his Family we all eventually pass through this Life.

So the one hit wonder song of Nice One Cyril was in actual fact about Cyril

Regis who played for WBA you see what happens when we all put our collective

thoughts together which produces positive information

George Connelly half time keepin – up was the Dynamo Kiev friendly

Jock Stein was trying out a new system that he said could result in games being 7-3 ,8-4 or similar, we lost 1-0 😩

Yeah you are right 31003, I think he did score a couple of goals against us,

in the early Seventies, when Jock Stein was our Manager.

However, those where the days whem The Kelly’s & The Whites where

running our Club, Willie Pettigrew would have been a good addition to

our squad of players back then however trying to get money off of the

    then.

So that song was dedicated to an ‘Ex’ Spurs Player, well we all learn

something new each day. So I was partly right when I said that I

thought the song was about a London Club player. So I was right

about London, however I was wrong about the Area in London

QPR is a West London Club, where as Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs)

is a North London Club well as they say we all learn something

new each day. Anyway Good Night WeeBobbyCollins I bid you

pleasant Dreams & Hail Hail !

Yes I think so ,jock had tried it out at training, I think he pushed Tommy Gemmell in front of Yogi aHughes etc.

It may had worked I training but not against Kiev

I think there was about 50 thousand at the game expecting an avalanche of goals but Heigh Ho that’s life HH

You know my views on this 10 in a row thing.

It has got me into bother for suggesting it is no big deal.

Only one club playing in Scotland today who has won 9 in a row. Celtic.

Why the great desire to beat Jock Stein’s record?

I think the whole 10 in a row charade is justifying the same club huns argument.

Not that I won’t be ecstatic when we win the league this season.

Would prefer a European trophy though.

Delaneys Dunky, a European Trophy win, is a few years down the line.

& will not be easy, these types of adventures never is.

We would have to put our full concentration & resources, into trying & achieve

that type of goal, of winning a European Trophy in future. For the time being

lets be realistic here, we all know by now what this Season’s 2020/21 top

priority is. As for winning a European Trophy, in the future years to come.

We would need to start making purposeful, & long runs in Europe, to achieve

that milestone target, which you would like to see in future. Put it this way,

the last time we reached a European Final was in the year of 2003 seventeen

years ago. The time before that (2003) was 1970 (50 Years Ago) & The time

before that was 1967 (53 Years Ago) so as I’ve said above that achievement

will be a few years down the line. Hail Hail Young Bhoy.

Hello again all you young rebels.

That friendly against Dynamo was the game Jock played players

all in different positions, by his reckoning good players could play

anywhere, hence it was plastered all over the newspapers and a

huge crowd expected for a friendly.

The amazing talent of big George doing keepie uppy around the

park was the highlight of the game.

Also remember an all dark green strip, don’t know if that was a

first wear, but then my aul memory could be playing tricks.. again.

Madmitch – agree it’s disappointing we are losing young players to Bayern.

Unfortunately Bayern are ahead of other big clubs in understanding the impact of FFP.

They are spending a fortune on youth development and, as a result, are hoovering up young talent everywhere.

A quite brilliantly run club in the last decade.
