What does 10-in-a-row matter, Armstrong, Directors’ Box hospitality

416

If you review the comments section in August, you will note the demand for a holding midfield player to be purchased.  There was corresponding anger (to put it mildly) immediately after the close of the window that one wasn’t purchased.  Roll on three months and it’s difficult to see where such a player would fit in, even during Champions League games.

Instead space opened up for Stuart Armstrong, who, often used on the left, was well out of the picture last season.  Now he’s playing central mid and earned two assists and a goal on Saturday, leapfrogging Nir Bitton and Callum McGregor for his place.

McGregor again answered the call at left back, but his move into the middle at halftime changed the game.  Two goals down, Celtic needed someone to take a grip on the game.  Operating with very little space McGregor played a one-two with Armstrong, dropped the shoulder on a defender, before finding the corner of the net.  True control under pressure.

Kolo Toure’s first game back from injury was memorable for the wrong reasons, caught ball-watching for Louis Moult’s goals, the first of which is Goal of the Season material.  Sharpness will improve for Kolo, but the change in defence illustrates how effective the Sviatchenko-Simunovic partnership has been.

Graeme Souness met the Scottish media last week and gave his personal insight into the game.  On Celtic’s dominance, which he was unequivocal about, he posed one question: “What does 10-in-a-row matter?”

I know one Celtic fan who is neither here nor there on the subject of 10-in-a-row but for most of us, that number of consecutive league titles has enormous resonance.  46 years ago Celtic broke their own record to go seven-in-a-row.  When nine was achieved two years later it met with little enthusiasm, but a target was created – and met.

Nine-in-a-row was a record many of us were enormously proud of but it’s no longer something we can shout about, nobody can, when two share the achievement.

I suspect the week after 10 is achieved we’ll wonder what all the fuss was about but our world view will change.  10-in-a-row represents the horizon for many of us, we cannot seriously consider what lies beyond until we’re there.

Here’s a couple of thoughts for you.  We’ll no longer count our achievements in years, but in Generations.  Generations of Celtic fans will perhaps know the occasional blip, but that’s as harsh as it will get.

Perhaps more tellingly, Celtic will not to lose another Scottish league title in their lifetime of a fair percentage of fans.  It’ll be green and white, right ‘til the end.

I’m sure I’ll regret getting involved here but iz our ZZ guy not right? If they get 7p in the £ from the merchandising deal then an item that sells for £40 gets ‘them’ £2.80. If they sell 178,000 taps (I know!) then this would earn ‘them’ £498,400 so there or ther abouts covering the negotiators bonus.

    Aw Naw

Nonsense. UEFA and ECA have a joint memorandum supporting FFP.

No time buddy sorry. If what you say is true and not nonsense then answer me this question.

Why did the ECA bestow a life time membership on a club that has never played in Europe ?

    =======

They question should be why have they not removed a lifetime membership from a club who had one as result of winning a European Cup?

ECA are a separate organisation from UEFA and not a regulator so it’s a matter of how many ECA club members think it a matter they gaf about to change their rules.

As it stands TRFC no longer have the Ordinary Membership that RFC had. TRFC have an Associate Membership in compliance with ECA rules.

Whatever the reason it has nothing to do with the reason why FFP was introduced after agreement between the ECA and UEFA which was to protect the future of professional football in Europe.

    Here we go.

    Entitlement? superiority? Lording it?

Not for those of use who lived through their cheating 9 and had to endure the vilification of gloating orc hordes mocking us ‘beggars’, us hopeles slosers, second-clas scitizens and football club…

For me, I look forward with GLEE to that 10 and will – with aggressive JOY – bend over those Hun vermin and with clenched fist of triumph ram it right up them so far* their spittle will rain green and white fury every time they vent their perma-rage.

*Metaphorically speaking, of course. The physical reality, while very appealing would involve far too much ID and mano-a-mano contact for me to be comfortable with…

Sensitive guilt-ridden, hand-wringing, nouveau Tims who don’t wish to upset those nice ‘Rangers’ fellows need not apply for the culmination of the Celtic resurrection in May 2021.

When I heard about a fake email from the SFA, I started searching my inbox for something titled “Why financial fair play is vital for Scottish football”.

  6. Agree with Davidopoulos,we don’t want to hang around this sub standard league for years to come.Hope we get stuck into Man City.Armstrong good SPL player but not top euro class.Hope Shorty comes back soon, some of Dembele’s shots are a joke. Now the league is almost over, bring back Kris Commons. He can’t have done something so bad that he’s not getting a game.Even if we win 10 and more we wont get credit and just told we had massive resources compared to the rest. Please don’t play Toure, past it.Where are our young players that are doing us proud week in week out.Get them blooded and build a close team brought up together.HH

Several weeks ago I posted that the vast majority of footballers etc were not very bright IMO ?

That has been my belief for many years now , and I see nothing to change my mind when reading the crap that Boyd, Fergushun and McGhee come out with to name but three.

In the old days many players opened pubs etc, mainly due to pubs generally being busy back then even during week days.

However, to be fair to a lot of those players back then, most stepped out of school and straight into football, without having qualifications for any other career during or indeed after their playing days were done.

At least players nowadays ( those few with any brains), have far more educational opportunities during and after playing football, plus I dare say many clubs operate a system that young players do get an education in their formative football careers and beyond ?

  8. I posted this on JJ’S site earlier on the matter of points deducted for insolvency.

Whatever happens “TRFC/RIFC’s” SFA Membership began as far as UEFA are concerned in 2012.

UEFA Head of Club Licensing Treverso correctly described “TRFC/RIFC” as a NEW “club/company.”

The SFA to my knowledge have

never made a same club statement (although they did go to some lengths to get STV’s Grant Russell to try and bury the significant new “club/company” info in UEFA’s reply to Res12 lawyer) so the SFA (and UEFA, to whom SFA are subservient on football regulation,) can only apply the rules as “TRFC/RIFC” being a new “club/company”

15 points and an end to the Ratner like nonsense that treats the majority of the Scottish games customers as idiots.

You make a good point Auldheid. Engaging the services of a solicitor gave the SFA no latitude to dismiss any findings as the creations of an obsessed sub-culture. Grant Russell lost face in my eyes when he tried to undermine Traverso’s incontrovertible position. Rangers only ‘continue’ in the corrupt entertainment that is Scottish football. Social unrest trumps sporting integrity.

  9. Awe_Naw_No_Annoni_Oan_Anaw_Noo on

    Auldheid,

No Sevco have permanent membership due to being a founder member. I am interested in when exactly that was decided.

It cannot be ordinary as you need to play in Europe to become an ordinary member.

So in effect they have permanent associate membership. Once they go on an outstanding European run like Motherwell have recently they will replace them as a current ordinary member and can then vote and influence.

The ECA are a powerful highly influential body that attend UEFA Executive Committee meetings.

I think it is fair to say that when Sevco were a forth tier new Scottish club but were still associate members of the SFA ( I should check it they might have been ordinary members…unimportant anyway) but obviously this organisation that represents the clubs ( Celtic being one) do not hold FFP in any high regard whatsoever.

It is an obstacle not an agreed mutual standard.

The European Club Association, set up in 2008 to replace the G-14 Group and the European Club Forum, has 5 Scottish clubs in the membership of 220:

o Ordinary Members – Celtic and Motherwell

o Associated Members – Aberdeen, Hearts and Rangers*

    Rights of Ordinary Members

It is to be noted that only Ordinary Members have a voting right in the ECA General Assembly. Furthermore, only club representatives from ECA Ordinary Member Clubs can stand for ECA Executive Board Elections.

Peter Lawwell is a member of the 15 man Executive Board of the ECA

I think you will find that Sevco were an Ordinary member at the time of Charles Green.

This alone tells you what the ECA think of FFP. It´s not exactly shrouded in their reason for being now is it ?

Now if this is how they handle Sevco when they go tits up and flaunt every FFP think you can think off … you can be rest assured they wont do anything to Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich,

Man City were only brought to book over FFP due to ECA influence and by a man who has no qualms about trousering money from FIFA

  24. Singing about 10 in a row is a tad premature. methinks. I know it looks like Celtic are unstoppable at the moment, but if a week is a long time in politics then 4-5 years is a very long time in football. I remember last year Celtic fans singing in one game (v Malmo) `We`re doing the huddle in the Champions League.` That didn`t turn out too well. Egg, lots of, on faces if it doesn`t materialise. Just ma honest thoughts.

  25. I see today’s article is a magical combination so often loved by CQN.

Firstly a glowing piece about how great celticmare doing( and they are) but which is really just an exercise,in expectation management.

We don’t need new players now. Honest.

A bad sign for those of us hoping the board had truly turned a corner.

And then followed (of course) with what is now commonly known as a “squirrel”. A nice wee distraction from the erstwhile expectation management.

The rule allowing the past winner of UEFA competition a permanent membership pre dated 2012.

The ECA was formed in 2008 to replace the G14 so the rule allowing permanent membership to past winnersc was likely to be in place four years before circumstances the rule never envisaged transpired.

It’s a bit like UEFAs Web site not reflecting UEFA’S regulatory position with regard to Traverso and new club/company in that it doesnt alter TRFC/RIFC official status as a new club.

HamiltonTim’s account of matches he will attend in December highlights the dedication of fans to the club and the money we spend supporting our team. The lack of a fans’ zone at Celtic Park is a real disappointment.

Saturday’s result was fantastic. I saw very little of it and the highlights on BT earlier do it very little justice. A brilliant result for Brendan, the team and, especially us, the fans. KTF.

  30. I instinctively hate such talk about lifetimes of league titles but I suppose in reality, no club in Scotland can even think of competing with our financial power.

Short of a future CEO going to vegas and sticking £100million on black, I can’t see us ever falling to the level of the other clubs. A generation of domination is very much achievable if not an outright certainty.
