What happened to Martin O’Neill?

949

Football is a results business and Sunderland’s results have been rotten for months, so we shouldn’t be surprised that Martin O’Neill was dismissed as manager on Saturday.  But he is Martin O’Neill, who appeared to be able to walk on water when at Celtic.  What happened?

Martin’s teams played the same football at Sunderland as they did at Celtic and Leicester.  Direct and, if supported by excellent players, incredibly effective, but Martin was the antithesis of the tinkerer manager.  He had his plan and stuck to it, a fact which Alex McLeish successfully exploited.

Of all the recent dismissals in England his was least surprising.  Sunderland thought they were heading for relegation but still have a fighting chance, the right change could produce the short-term boost required.  As for our old pal Paulo, I’m in David Milliband’s camp. He and ‘Arry can go the same way.

The club has struggled since the players and manager talked about players being on beaches before the season is out.

The players should NOT have been thinking like that until the season is over. They have switched off and are struggling to get going again.

That team will press the opposition all night if required,no individuals or prima donnas allowed.

  12. I notice that Pardew has an eye on big Kelvin.

The man who doesn’t rate the SPL is looking at signing a player from here to improve his defence.

Show us the money Pardew. Offer a big transfer fee and you may get your man. The last Centre Back to move to an EPL team from Scotland was £8m worth. Offer that and you may get your man.

We should push this man for every penny IF he wants our CB. He is no friend of Celtic.

No, no one can clarify it because they have been careful never to make a clear statement about it. Now’s the day and now’s the hour.

Funny thing is, if Sevco had just shut up about it, their stony silence on the matter would have continued and Sevco could have kept playing the ‘Let’s pretend we’re a big club’ game. They are now forcing the authorities’ hand.

  15. BOBBY MURDOCH’S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS

I have given up talking to them. Any Sevco fan asks me to talk football I just say I would rather not. They are so deluded it’s frightening. It’s everyone’s fault bar their own clubs. They will believe anything their club and media tell them.

If Swally needs £10m to spend to win division 2 or 3 then they have bigger problems than I thought. Neil Lennon will be lucky to get that kind of money to spend to try and make the Champions League and we will probably make at least £20m in the transfer window.

You are a respected business figure. I am just a bampot. But the point is that if either you or I were to pick up the phone to the SFA or UEFA today and ask them, bluntly, if Sevco are entitled to add this season’s third division title to the title Rangers won, by hook or by crook, before liquidation, they would not answer us. They would ignore us. They would probably be reasonably polite to you, but you still would not get any nearer to a straight answer.

Until Stuart Cosgrove or someone else who cares about Scottish football for its own sake asks them, they will never say.

  26. I’m going to write and ask UEFA if the Rangers who are at number ninety in their club rankings are the same club as the “The Rangers” who just won the Barr’s Irn Bru Scottish Division 3.

I do not seek to defend Kayal’s form over the past year BUT the amount of vitriol he has faced since Sunday where he was among our best performers (alongside Kris and Izzy and Vic) suggests he has become a pet scapegoat who can do no right.

As for your hiding and not being available- just look at the opening shot from the BBC highlights below:-

    St. Mirren game

Izzy drops off his marker (Conor Newton) to show for a pass as Izzy breaks forward. He then gives a great defence splitting slip pass to give Hoops a good shot at goal. Now I agree that he did not race on into the box to seek a one-two with Gary but that showed game intelligence because a) Gary wisnae going to pass back, b) there were other Celts in the box< c) He was still available for a cut back to the edge of the box (unlikely though that was to happen).

Now, it is only one instance but I cannot say that I have noticed the pattern you assert. I have seen many poor games from Beram but, at a time when Scott Brown is missing, he provides more of the on-field agression and drive than any other player we have. If it had not been for Beram and Izzy (after Kris was subbed and Vic sent off) , we would have lost that game.

  28. LiviBhoy/Bobby Murdoch’s

    Agree with your points.

Too many already on the beach imo.I found the comments about giving players a break a little strange.I understand the logic of it on one level in that we have early CL Qualifiers to play but what was the plan for the eventuality that we reach the Scottish Cup Final?

If NL is struggling for a solution to this malaise,I would suggest he lays it down that those who don’t give 100% will not be considered for the Cup Final (should we get there)

I would also suggest,in Brown’s absence,he stops passing round the captain’s armband willy nilly.

A captain should display attributes that inspire his teammates to greater efforts through his own leadership skills and the contribution he makes personally.

Have you seen much evidence of that lately? Saturday?

I was prompted to post this partly through reading Miku’s recent comments.A talented player,no doubt, but another one in the non-trier box for me.Token runs, token attempts at regaining possession etc don’t fool many for too long.Sadly,he is not alone at CP at the moment

  29. TinyTim

If they were to come out and support the Sevco myth it would, in some ways, be progress. It would be interesting to see how they explained:

    1. Why Sevco had to start this season’s Scottish Cup in September

    2. How players such as Neil Alexander and Lee McCulloch were magically able to TUPE from Rangers to Sevco, if Sevco and Rangers are the same employer, and

    3. At what point and how Sevco transmuted into Rangers, given that, in the close season, both Sevco and Rangers were existing clubs at the same time.
