What happened to Martin O’Neill?

949

Football is a results business and Sunderland’s results have been rotten for months, so we shouldn’t be surprised that Martin O’Neill was dismissed as manager on Saturday.  But he is Martin O’Neill, who appeared to be able to walk on water when at Celtic.  What happened?

Martin’s teams played the same football at Sunderland as they did at Celtic and Leicester.  Direct and, if supported by excellent players, incredibly effective, but Martin was the antithesis of the tinkerer manager.  He had his plan and stuck to it, a fact which Alex McLeish successfully exploited.

Of all the recent dismissals in England his was least surprising.  Sunderland thought they were heading for relegation but still have a fighting chance, the right change could produce the short-term boost required.  As for our old pal Paulo, I’m in David Milliband’s camp. He and ‘Arry can go the same way.

  1. The membership should never have been allowed to be transferred. Everyone had their chance then but the intimadation was at a level that everyone was afraid to. They used a loop hole to let them claim they have 54 & 1/2 titles. They don’t. They have the shame of going bust and not paying their debts. No matter what they achieve in the future they will never be allowed to forget that.

Once they fluke their way to the top league Celtic will deal with them on the pitch. I want a record scoreline. We haven’t beat this new mob 7-1 yet. It’s up to the players to make it happen!

SFTB – I said he did some good stuff as well mate but it is a pattern I saw a few times during the game and I watched him specifically on those occasions. The pass to Hooper was a good one and there would be no way he would look for a return in that instance.

I wouldn’t mind seeing the again on TV to see if it looks the same – I find quite often that the view live and the few from tv can be different.

I think he is a good player and I have never noticed it before but I was sober on Sunday and that might have affected my senses (i.e. allowed them to work!)

Don’t take it personally – it’s just a point of view based on my take of the game.

  3. As far as I am aware. UEFA made their position clear that it was an internal issue regarding The Rangers and the SFA should make the call. No point in even contacting Ogilvie. It’s pretty clear what his position will be.

Interesting that Davie Syme is agreeing with Neil Lennon regarding the referee’s.

Anyone ever had an after dinner speaker at a Celtic function who used to be a referee? From what I have heard from colleagues at work over the years they have always been at Rangers fans functions. I think that says it all.

Rangers advertising campaign being investigated ASA confirms

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has confirmed that is it investigating The Rangers Football Club over an advertising campaign run this season.

The ASA has confirmed to The Drum that it has received 62 complaints over and radio and regional press advertising campaign that began to run last year.

A spokesperson for the ASA, explained: “We have received 62 complaints about a radio and regional press ad for Rangers Football Club. The complainants have challenged whether the claim ‘Scotland’s most successful club’ is misleading, because they believe that the current club was only formed in 2012.”

They added that a formal investigation in the adverts was now underway.

The complaints follow the liquidation of Rangers Football Club that took place last year. This led to formation of a new club which entered the Third Division of Scottish football last summer. That club, led by manager Ally McCoist, comfortably won the division on Saturday, but now faces a wait to find out which league they will compete in next year with the Scottish football authorities yet to decide whether to proceed with league reconstruction this summer.

At the time of writing, The Drum was awaiting comment from Rangers on the ASA investigation.

This will be laughed out of the media by the usual suspects as they are not football people if they find the advertising false.

I am not sure that we should respond to Ally McCoist’s claim as I think we will find it is a wind up attempt to see if we will bite.

Ally’s quote, in full was :-

“It’s definitely title 55, there’s no doubt about that. In terms of major championships it’s not one of those. But you can only win what’s in front of you, and I’ll be delighted if it’s title 56 next season.”

I have bolded his get out clause if he is questioned on the matter.

The main reason not to respond is that Ally is no official voice in Scottish Football. I have no expectations or desire to see the Sevco fans change their view that they support the same club. I will try to infuriate them by saying it’s cute and endearing that they think so.

However the Official record books are another matter and what the SFA spokesmen say about this is another matter. However, it will be difficult to be dogmatic on this issue. I looked at the list of Queen’s Park honours and, alongside their 10 Scottish Cup wins, they include their 1956 First Div. title, their 1981 Second Div. title and their 2000 Third Div. title as Major Honours (to distinguish them from Minor Honours such as the Scottish Amateur Cup and Glasgow Cup. Heck! They even include their 2007 play-off promotion win as a Major Honour.

So, Ally is entitled to count the 3rd Div. title as a major honour. Pedantically their honour count, as expressed by them should read 54 (plus 1) rather than 55.

Even more pedantically it should be expressed as 1 by the official SFA and SFL bodies.

So, while it is worthwhile to question the official bodies about The Rangers official status, history and honours claims, we should not cite Ally’s statement as the reason for stating so.

  8. I’m sure i watched a interview on camera with Gutless Reagan, who when asked directly about whether they are a new club or not,

gutless looked into the camera and said “I think it’s time we moved on from this and let everyone make their own mind up about that one”

The Brains Trust (SMSM) don’t want to deal with this question. They want the 140 yr history to continue and when we question it we are ‘obsessed’. This has become Spiers’ favourite retort.. Eight pages pull outs for the Third division, dearie me. Lucky they didn’t win the Ramsdens Cup.

  10. The point is the SFA and UEFA compile lists of club honours.

They are going to have to declare their hand whether they want to or not.

  13. My fear it is them ( Sevconians) laughing at us.

As far as I can see they are getting away with it all with little or no opposition.

They seem to by some strange osmosis actually believe what they are saying and with the help of colluding or silent authorities the myth is perpetuated.

I honestly believe if Celtic come out and tell the truth it will make a massive difference and will actually reenergise our support.

    Our silence is disgusting

  14. What is being missed here is that UEFA have to rule on this one.

    Dear UEFA,

Are the Rangers who are at number ninety in your club rankings the same club as the “The Rangers” (Sevco)who just won the Barr’s Irn Bru Scottish Division 3?

I am considering investing the “The Rangers” (Sevco).

The potential of my investment will be materially affected by when the “The Rangers” (Sevco) can play in Europe.

Bearing in my mind my previous question can you clarify the earliest date Sevco will be eligible to play in UEFA competitions?

  17. The statement on the SevCo website on Saturday night included the following.

A statement on Rangers’ official website on Saturday night said the championship “does not count towards the club’s world record haul of 54 titles”.

It added: “That figure only takes into account top-flight championship wins. The success won’t be added to Rangers’ unrivalled figure of 115 major honours, comprised also of 33 Scottish Cups, 27 League Cups and the 1972 Cup Winners’ Cup.”

Quite obviously they are delusional about the other ‘trophies won’.

I would expect soon to see what the Record Books say at SFA offices. Whichever figure they put up, 55 or 1, it will result in Armageddon.

Either our football is a sport or it is a circus. Either you die when you are liquidated or not. Either we tell the truth or we don’t. Either we care about the game or not.

  25. The Honest Mistake loves being first on

The worrying thing about this situation is that there needs to be consequences of throwing tens of millions of money that you don’t have to gain an advantage. If there are no consequences then the new club will follow hot in the footsteps of its predecessor. Scottish football will be doomed to repeat the same exercise until consequences and punishments are faced.

That is not my opinion. They were liquidated – that is a matter of public record. If you allow yourself to be annoyed by half-wits who can’t handle the truth then more fool you.

These jokers can claim whatever they want and it makes no difference to the facts. The official Sevco website is not even claiming the title as a 55th.

Point out simple facts to any Zombie and they have no comeback. There is no need to get upset about it, because that is what they are hoping for. That is all they have. Stick to the facts.

They had a ‘red card against liquidation’ protest about a year ago where the entire stadium held up red cards in the 18th and 72nd minutes of their game against St Mirren – because they didn’t want to lose their history.
