What happened to Martin O’Neill?

949

Football is a results business and Sunderland’s results have been rotten for months, so we shouldn’t be surprised that Martin O’Neill was dismissed as manager on Saturday.  But he is Martin O’Neill, who appeared to be able to walk on water when at Celtic.  What happened?

Martin’s teams played the same football at Sunderland as they did at Celtic and Leicester.  Direct and, if supported by excellent players, incredibly effective, but Martin was the antithesis of the tinkerer manager.  He had his plan and stuck to it, a fact which Alex McLeish successfully exploited.

Of all the recent dismissals in England his was least surprising.  Sunderland thought they were heading for relegation but still have a fighting chance, the right change could produce the short-term boost required.  As for our old pal Paulo, I’m in David Milliband’s camp. He and ‘Arry can go the same way.

Pretty sure John Fleming came recommended by Phil McG

Cannae be right all the time I suppose…

  2. KINGLUBO training and playing alongside a Lubo Moravcik, week in, week out, would pull Scott Brown in a different direction. Even as he is I think he’d be in the team.

And that’s the problem with comparisons across time. A player must be compared in the context of 2 different environments. Not his individual characteristics.

The Quality Street Kids were as much a result of the influence of the Lisbon Lions as they were of their own efforts.

A Bobby Lennox in the current setup would shame into effort the current lot. Scott Brown would experience no such twinges because he gives us, the team and himself everything.

  3. Pfayr, yes we were told that and not without reason. He was primarily a linesman and he used to work with British Telecom. However in replacing Dallas he following the Collum approach. I wouldnt be surprised if Ogilvie has the occasional chats about progress of certain referees or key appointments.

  4. Is it worth mentioning that the St Mirren players, who’ve played 11 games fewer than their Celtic counterparts this season, have just enjoyed a 2 week break while our lot have been travelling the world playing international football?

They should be brighter, as they do less work. Judging by their results in general they do no work other than prepare for their next game on the telly.

And no, earning more money does not speed up your muscle recovery time.

There are interesting stats that show that this season is very much in keeping with the Strachan years.

‘Scott Brown would experience no such twinges because he gives us, the team and himself everything.’

    Scott Brown is out injured.

He probably hasn’t done his long term health any good by his attitude to giving his all when he shouldn’t have.

I just wonder whether other players look at him, not as an example of what to do, but more of a warning as what might happen to them if they do what he does.

Add in the LNS debacle and the crap with league reconstruction …and many fans are not just getting fed up with the poor football , but the game at large

Scottish football is in a wretched state …caused mainly by RFC and Sevco …and their servants in the offices of the SFA etc

    Hi guys. First time poster.

Going to Rome for first time in midweek. Any advice on attractions, safety, restaurants, etc greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  8. I needed cheering up after yesterday, so just watched a YouTube video of “Smell the Glove” an 8 minute recall of the 1998 Title winning game when Henke & Brattbakk ended the Huns 10 in a row bid. Highly reccomended viewing, Happy as a Pig in Sh** now.

  9. ernie@17:29 if other players did take that attitude I’d regard them as looking for an excuse.

It’s for NL to manage Scott Brown’s excesses, and not to take advantage of them.

The overuse and over reliance on James Forrest last season is still taking its toll

  10. Petethebeat

I’d also have Wilson ahead of Valgaeren. He’s quicker, and actually likes playing as a left sided centre back.

I’d have Wanyama in for Lennon, as he provides a goal threat at set pieces.

  11. The Horseface if you’re interested in the macabre go see the Church of Santa Maria delle Concezione de Cappuccini. It’s beyond weird.

  12. ……pfayr,

I was thinking last night, post the Madden events, about Fleming’s influence.

I got to speculating, why did Phil give him such a glowing recommendation?

Venturing into John Le Carre territory, I wondered did Fleming feed Phil with info, which would damage Dallas, with one eye on his job?

  13. On a serious note Horseface, Rome is full of attractions, The Colosseum & surrounding areas are a must. The Trevi Fountain & The Spanish Steps, and yes The Vatican & St. Peters. The Museum in the Vatican is incredible but you need to get there early as there can be huge queues to get in. Like all big Cities you have to watch out for pick-pockets etc. particularly around the main tourist attractions. I’ve been there a few times and have never had any problems. Enjoy the trip.

  14. Thomthethim

    Perhaps

Phil was very positive about Fleming ……maybe like so many …when he finally gets the job he’s after …he toes the party line to keep said job

  15. Ten men

Start with the SFA and tell them their employees[refs] are not fit for purpose and the SPL demands accredited officials who stand up to scrutiny and not the scrutiny provided by Dougal and Clark

  16. where has the football gone , where has the team that humbled the huns 28/2/11 gone . That yesterday and for weeks before is un acceptable . We if u want to face it , have guys playing for us who dont want to be here . . And imho dont deserve to be donning the world famous hoops . We need shot of thesr guys . And if our managment are not up to what we DO need in the hoops . Its time we were shot of them too .. At least with oneils teams we had battlers for the jersey

  17. corkcelt @17:49 warns “… you have to watch out for pick-pockets etc. particularly around the main tourist attractions. I’ve been there a few times and have never had any problems….”

Is that because you don’t take your wallet out with you?

Seen the Joe Ledley chat .

Good player & I am a fan, but Joe is at his best when the opposition are coming at us e.g. Barcelona. Joe was immense that night when his job was to destroy rather than create. When we play teams like St Mirren we should be taking the game to them, not trying to hit them on the counter attack .

Yesterday IMHO , we had 8 players on the park whose qualities are defending / breaking up , and three whose qualities are going forward (Sammi, Hoops & Kris)

I am all for keeping it tight and playing a hassle and harass game when we go way to Barca or Juve, but, St Mirren , we should be taking it to them, and getting a couple more offensive players on the park ?

I will also make a prediction for the cup semi. If we don’t get the balance right and have 5/6 attack minded players, then we will lose the game in the second half , and go out.

    Horeface

When you go to the colosseum i recommend you pay extra for a guide -use the metro -look out for pickpockets and agressive beggars

  20. recommend Rome to anyone, went to Trastevere ( spellng? ), very old and left bank type area , found two great and cheap restaurants , unusual in Rome and a magnificent church dedicated to the Virgin Mary , only one in the city apparently.

Sorry cannot remember names , vino was very good and night was long, but I will go back God willing.

  21. excathedra44 on

Sorry about Martin, great memories, some sore ones also.

    Re Di Canio,stupid appointment.

More relevant is our current form, and repeated errors by players and Manager.

    30 points lost,not good enough.

Forster, despite outstanding performances still ships goals, his decision making with Izzy, Rogne and Wilson not good.

However more importantly is something I raised months ago and that is that we cannot afford to play players who only choose to play when it suits them,I give you our deep lying, feart to take a tackle Gary Hooper,NOT the hot shot everyone seems to think, until you look at the SPL charts and see he is now fifth if that.

Sorry Neil but you are stretching your credibility by constantly playing this guy,if he wants to play, then sign up and muck in,if not he should be dropped and moved on.

The players quoted as being targets,Hooper,Wanyama,Forster, and Ledley of these 4 the only one I would keep would be Wanyama, the others have thrived being at Celtic as we gave them a platform as average players to perform above their ability level.

I resent this Club being used as some kind of stepping stone to so called greater things by players who have an inflated opinion of both their own ability and inportance.

  22. Clashcitybhoy

Lenny has the team set up far too defensively on the domestic stage.

There is absolutely no need whatsoever for 2 defensive midfielders in the SPL games.

helllo , see earlier post re Rome , I was almost pick pocketed on first bus journey from hotel, very organised gangs of Roma Gypsies run the game there. I was lucky and managed to toe the guy up the arse as he jumped out the side door of bus, many locals then cheered me off the bus. You must go to the Piazza Navona , massive tourist trap and very expensive but the sights and the fountain are excellent. Enjoy it , I did.

Re John Fleming. I knew him a good few years back. Always seemed like a decent guy, a capable referee and not a Deadco fan.
