What happened to Martin O’Neill?

949

Football is a results business and Sunderland’s results have been rotten for months, so we shouldn’t be surprised that Martin O’Neill was dismissed as manager on Saturday.  But he is Martin O’Neill, who appeared to be able to walk on water when at Celtic.  What happened?

Martin’s teams played the same football at Sunderland as they did at Celtic and Leicester.  Direct and, if supported by excellent players, incredibly effective, but Martin was the antithesis of the tinkerer manager.  He had his plan and stuck to it, a fact which Alex McLeish successfully exploited.

Of all the recent dismissals in England his was least surprising.  Sunderland thought they were heading for relegation but still have a fighting chance, the right change could produce the short-term boost required.  As for our old pal Paulo, I’m in David Milliband’s camp. He and ‘Arry can go the same way.

  1. From June 2011.

Welcome as the changes to the Disciplinary system are, there are three other essential areas that the now more empowered SFA CEO, Stewart Regan, needs to address to safeguard the well being of Scottish Football and they are:

    •The Referee Service

    •The Club Licensing Service

    •An Ownership Vetting Service

Note the word “service” for this is the way much of what the SFA do should be viewed. The SFA provide a number of services to the clubs who play in Scotland. They should not be seen as their masters but their servants or in modern terms the clubs are the customers and the SFA the service providers. This change of attitude would allow competition to provide such services to enter the scene and so improve them. This would be a huge cultural change but it has to start somewhere and all the above mentioned “services” would be prime candidates.

    The Referee Service

This would be split with the SFA doing the recruitment, training and match appointments (having taken the nature of the game to be officiated into account). However the monitoring and evaluation would be the province of the customer, using referees or ex refs from anywhere to mark to a standard set by the customer. This spilt of responsibilities would prevent any one person being in a position to exert his own influence on referees as a result of being part of the appointment and evaluation process. It would safeguard the SFA from the kind of suspicion that led to the referees’ strike and lead to a higher standard of referee because the customer would be setting the standard not the supplier (as happens everywhere in business but football) If it did not, it would free the SPL/SL to hire their own referees from wherever they could get them. A bit of competition never did anybody any harm and that includes our referees who, if they reached higher standards, would be in more demand outside Scotland.

My point is that maybe we should be looking at our style of play and in particular playing players in their proper positions. eg don’t put Hooper wide right get McGeoch on say. Ledley for me is better going forward and arriving in the box or running beyond the strikers. You restrict his performance by simply giving him a role of ‘destroyer’.

    Ten Men Won the League,

I would suggest yesterday we had 3 defensive midfielders ( Kayal, Vic, and Ledley) , which is at least one too many when playing St Mirren, who had three attacking midfielders in McGowan, McGinn and Teale.

Let them worry about us, rather than we worry about them

Exactly , his last gig saw the end of the Real Radio phone in. hard to believe that Clyde took him back as Dalziel was filling the role of dimwitted orc perfectly. However as we all know, youcan never have too many silly, narrow minded fools on that show.

  8. Good listen there on Shortbread. Jim McInally picked his top X1 he played with. The Maestro, Daniel Fergus and the Cannonball Kid all mentioned fondly with the ‘second best player from Viewpark’ John Robertson also picked.

we were set up in a 4-3-3 , the new `must have` formation , , full backs must get forward as the 3 we had were all central midfielders and as you pointed out defensive in their skill set.

Sorry to say but we only need VW at the base of the 3 with Broony or Forrest on the right and Sammi or Joe charging up the left , against SPL teams. Don`t know why we did not go this way. I know Forrest and Broony are injured so maybe McGeoch or Commons on that side?

  10. D.milliband is a walking monument to hypocrisy. Supported the war against Iraq and has the nerve to criticise di Canio. A posturing fool now off to take a fat salary. I thought charity was something voluntary.

  12. The political meanderings of half-witted footballers have never made me concerned for the future of society.

Graeme Sounness is a right wing blaggard but that’s not what I find him abhorrent.

Milliband running away from the situation in order to demonstrate to the world the purity and depth of his left wing credentials confirms for me that he is not very left wing at all.

A professional politician from a left wing political family put to flight by Paolo?

Paolo to me seems always to have a look of mild confusion on his face.

When asked to compare London to Glasgow he said “Oh thee shoppeeng een LonDon eez much dan dee Glasgow.” I was suddenly happy he was not playing for Celtic any more.

If a so called fascist was put to work alongside me I’d stay to oppose him. If it turned out he was better at his job than me, I’d have to shut up, raise my game and then squawk.

  13. I hope John Park is doing overtime coz the MSM have us loosing most of our players, Forster to Chelski, Matthews to Evertin, Wilson to Newcastle, Forest to Spurs, Wanyama to Arsenal/Liverpool Hooper to Spurs/Liverpool, Lustig to some Russian mob,Ledley to Cardiff.Efe to Liverpool.

Leaves us wi Paddy, Broony,Tony , Sammi Commons and Stokes.

I would go to war wi that 6 but !

Milliband’s parents were both Polish Jews.

That has more to do with his resignation than his political orientation.

  17. Off topic, but the thing annoying me the most about today’s new unified Police Force is the syntax of the name, ” Police Scotland “.

Simply because the English were beaten in 1066, and they didn’t have a native English-speaking monarch until 1399, we still have remnants of the French/Norman word-ordering : court martial, attorney general, body politic.

This probably isn’t an attempt to resurrect a medieval linguistic style, which was never fully embraced in Scotland anyway.

I reckon it might be a pathetic attempt at unity ( e.g. the cringeworthy Team GB ), or an even more boak-inducing attempt at solidarity ( remember Team America f*** yeah! ).

Or maybe we should regard it as a command and reply, ” Fine. We’ll do it then”.

  18. If ever there was a “jobs for the boys” example its BFDJ .
