What Stein got wrong in Lisbon

433

Jock Stein didn’t get it all right in Lisbon 50 years ago. He told his players Inter’s weak point was their goalkeeper, Giuliano Sarti, who passed away within the last day, aged 83. How wrong could he be? Sarti played the game of his life, resisting Celtic for an hour, and then keeping his team in the game until the end.

Inter’s famed defensive structure was unable to adapt to Celtic’s ability to create space, but a combination of Sarti and the woodwork kept the scoring down. Twice the keeper benefited from the West German officials, once when he stretched behind to claw the ball out of the net, and once when he grabbed Willie Wallace legs inside the six-yard box.

Sarti

Sarti was Inter keeper throughout the Grande Inter period, when they twice won the European Cup and Serie A title. He earlier won the league with Fiorentina, as well as the Cup Winners’ Cup.

Great, though he was, he was no King Canute, and could do nothing about Big Tam’s tidal wave, which changed the course of football.

  1. From BRTH, “contemporaneously”, Surely this is the word of the day por cierto.

    “Murray was duped by Whyte.

    Oh , really ? ”

    Yes- to an extent.

Murray wanted to not be the driver when Rangers FC crashed. He thrashed around avoiding Lithuanian crooks (Hearts had beaten him to that solution) and the only game plan available was a hapless Motherwell pretendy-millionaire to whom he thought he could sell the Brooklyn Bridge.

The wee hapless patsy, and no hero to me, proved more resilient in avoiding being the fall guy by secretly taping all the conspirators trying to set him up. In that way he duped David Murray- not in any other.

Despite all that, Craig was charged but walked free.

Now, it all depends on his financial status.

If he has, indeed, squirrelled away millions offshore from the fraud, then that supports the theory that this was all a conspiracy and they were all in it together for mutual benefit and Craig was willing to risk all, including prison time, for the rewards garnered. So it would have to be a substantial squirelled nest.

On the other hand, if he is genuinely skint, as has been declared in court, and all sources of money sequestered, that supports my view that this was an attempted stitch up. We might think, then, that Craigy will sue the backsides off all of those who have harmed him, therefore, but I do not think that is a given. Craig came close to doing jail time as he was put in the dock for that purpose. A warning shot was sent out to him about how much influence could be wielded to place him, and only him, in the dock. And the agreement could have been to botch the prosecution so badly as to obtain an outcome mutually beneficial.

On the one hand Craig walks free- a chastened man whose only punishment is to be never allowed to roam free in Scotland again.

And on the other, his silence about what he knows and what he has on tape, has been bought by this warning shot.

After all, police and prosecutors must have known about the existence of the tapes and what they purport to show. And yet…. they still charged Craig, and Craig alone. That was a powerful and loud statement in itself. And it will continue to be echoed across the media in Scotland, still narrating in terms that defend SDM as being “duped” in a different way to that I have suggested.

The next few weeks should tell us whether Craig will make a noise or sneak away. Those actions will spek volumes.

Great post. In an ideal world (I know, I know) how would you like to see the issues noted play out. Presumably the removal of Regan, wholesale reform of the SFA, and relevant investigations opened for starters?

“Do not liveth in the same place, but goest out to another place.Whilst travelling to this other place, you may comest upon another different place.Dwelleth in this place for a period of 2 score years. On leaving this place, when thou comest to the road, taketh the left path.If thou takest the right path, thou will endeth up in the place thou started your journey from”.

A very sobering passage,I always think.

Great post and clear summation of the position. Thank you.

Others have already suggested referring this to specific journalists to take on but, just a thought, would crowd funding a pr offensive say in the three months prior our Clubs agm not potentially bring this matter , a, to a wider audience, and b, put significant pressure on our Board to take this matter forward?

Maybe Level 5 could be retained :))))))

    Evening , Tovarich.

My major concern is not a definition of terrorism ( What with one thing and another , we could be here all day ) but the protection of ” Western ” values which are currently being eroded from within.

For what its worth , I felt that the second invasion of Iraq had one overriding purpose .

    The protection of Israel.

Ive been reading a book by Raymond Williams…’Culture and Society 1780-1950′

Knew a thing or two did Raymond, his analysis is amazing.

Bhoys in Austria; Does anyone know if there is truth in the rumour that Celtic will play Slavia Prague on 4th of July as part of the renaming of one of their stands after former Celtic player and the Father of Czech Football Johnny Madden?

Just so happens I’ll be in Prague on that day but can’t find any confirmation of the fixture anywhere….

There is a real danger, of pretending or believing that values are different in relation to religion, politics, geography, etc.

Its not true….there is no difference….all values are human values.

    A plausible explanation.

Without doubt , Murray wanted shot of Rangers at any price. Even a quid.

Without doubt , Whyte knew this. We all did.

Beggars belief that the desperate seller would have been imposing conditions on the ” gullible ” buyer.

Murray may even have provided him with the Ticketus strategem .

” Duped ” my Pogue . Or is it Mahon.

Someone on here suggested that Whyte was talking to the ” Sun ‘

    If so , more ” revelations “.
