What Stein got wrong in Lisbon

433

Jock Stein didn’t get it all right in Lisbon 50 years ago. He told his players Inter’s weak point was their goalkeeper, Giuliano Sarti, who passed away within the last day, aged 83. How wrong could he be? Sarti played the game of his life, resisting Celtic for an hour, and then keeping his team in the game until the end.

Inter’s famed defensive structure was unable to adapt to Celtic’s ability to create space, but a combination of Sarti and the woodwork kept the scoring down. Twice the keeper benefited from the West German officials, once when he stretched behind to claw the ball out of the net, and once when he grabbed Willie Wallace legs inside the six-yard box.

Sarti

Sarti was Inter keeper throughout the Grande Inter period, when they twice won the European Cup and Serie A title. He earlier won the league with Fiorentina, as well as the Cup Winners’ Cup.

Great, though he was, he was no King Canute, and could do nothing about Big Tam’s tidal wave, which changed the course of football.

  1. 16 ROADS – CELTIC ÜBER ALLES… on 6TH JUNE 2017 12:34 PM

    RIP Sarti.

How Celtic never got a penalty kick when Sarti grabbed Wallace by the legs is beyond belief.

The referee never saw it, luckily enough for Sarti as he would have been sent off.

Not that it matters now as the game was more or less won at that stage.

    Brilliant goalkeeper.

I think the referee, Kurt Tschenscher, did indeed see the incident.

In his excellent book “We’ll Always Have Lisbon” Pat Woods (and his co-author David Frier) write on page 122 …

The referee stated afterwards that “Sarti fell over a Celtic player’s legs”.

Herr Tschenscher (who has since passed away) was interviewed by David Frier as part of the research for the book and still maintained it was not a penalty.

I have always believed there could have been an alternative and not so glorious Lisbon story to be uncovered had we not won that day.

The early Inter “penalty” (an honest mistake?) angered Jock Stein so much that at half time he angrily said to the referee “Inter had placed an order for that penalty”.

On page 118 of Pat’s book, he notes the German football newspaper Fussball-Sport reported the matter (the penalty) should be investigated by UEFA.

The incident when Sarti pulled Willie Wallace down is one of the most blatant penalties you will ever see !

Maybe we overcame more than the heat and the 11 men of Inter in Lisbon.

We certainly triumphed where others both before and after our Lisbon victory, notably Liverpool, Derby County, Borussia Dortmund, Borussia Monchengladbach and perhaps Dundee United were the victims of, let’s call it, underhand tactics by Italian clubs.

Brian Glanville’s book “Champions of Europe – The history, romance and intrigue of the European Cup”, chapter 6 titled “The Years of the Golden Fix” is a good read for anyone wishing to learn more about the subject.

In that chapter he also covers our “stitch up” by UEFA and Rapid Vienna.

  2. Still at Heathrow myself.

There are one or two on RM who pointed out the outcome wasn’t hard to predict and that David Murray should be questioned etc, but those making that point are ‘reeking’ apparently. After that the descends further if that is at all possible :)

Gordon – The “We’ll always have Lisbon” book is where I seen the picture of the incident – it really does beggar belief how we didn’t get a penalty.

Think Beatbhoy recommended the book – I’m only onto page 60 so yet to read the referee’s explanation.

It’s an outstanding read as you say, also the photographs are equally amazing.

See the picture of Jimmy Johnstone turning the Inter defender inside out is a beezer also.

I think Lisbon was the first time (maybe only time) that that an Italian team lost a game with that guy as a ref. Maybe no real surprise he didn’t give a blatant penalty.
