What Stein got wrong in Lisbon

433

Jock Stein didn’t get it all right in Lisbon 50 years ago. He told his players Inter’s weak point was their goalkeeper, Giuliano Sarti, who passed away within the last day, aged 83. How wrong could he be? Sarti played the game of his life, resisting Celtic for an hour, and then keeping his team in the game until the end.

Inter’s famed defensive structure was unable to adapt to Celtic’s ability to create space, but a combination of Sarti and the woodwork kept the scoring down. Twice the keeper benefited from the West German officials, once when he stretched behind to claw the ball out of the net, and once when he grabbed Willie Wallace legs inside the six-yard box.

Sarti

Sarti was Inter keeper throughout the Grande Inter period, when they twice won the European Cup and Serie A title. He earlier won the league with Fiorentina, as well as the Cup Winners’ Cup.

Great, though he was, he was no King Canute, and could do nothing about Big Tam’s tidal wave, which changed the course of football.

Celtic defender Saidy Janko is a target for Championship trio Sheffield Wednesday, Reading and Bristol City, according to reports Janko spent last season on loan at Barnsley and he helped them consolidate in the Championship in the first season back in the second tier of English football with a 14th spot finish.

Not the first time that’s been said to me on this blog.

Murray’s finance team said repeatedly to a golfing poster here, “…ditch Rangers as it was always going to end in tears.”

    ——-

I’m sure BRTH will clarify, but I read it the other way round i.e. The CQN golfer advised the Murray finance guy to ditch Rangers.

The above good advice was ignored by a CQN poster until it was too late.

  6. Forgot all about janko

All noises about paddy coming to celtic sound good .. my only worry is i havent heard 1 other team linked with him .

Surely an england under21 who just had great season with celtic during a treble would be linked with few of the usual mid tier english teams at least.

You did your family proud and your mother in particular, as well as all Celtic women and men. I reckon the singing of Walk On during communion was sang so softly was because we all had huge lumps in our throats; which made it all the more moving.

  9. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

I watched a news thing on BBC Scotland about 20 minutes ago , it was about Whyte’s discharge .

I couldnt believe they actually mentioned the financial problems MIH had under Dodgy Dave the First.

They then mentioned Whyte and while talking of his period as owner, showed on the screen the list of the creditors of what was Rangers . This , to me, implied that the debts amassed were during Whyte’s tenure which is a load of mince. No mention in the report of the wee and big tax cases also.

Once again the mainstream media make out Whyte was completely responsible for the mess at Ibrox and had nothing to do with Sir Dodgalot.

I should not let this bother me but the blatant misreporting of the whole shambles caused by Murray and his business acquaintances , is very annoying.

There is some footage on facebook from the pool party in Vegas today. Loads of hoops and tricolours on show.

IMO CW is no hero of the celtic fans .

    I agree.

Craig Whyte is a low life. He is a low-mark vulture capitalist who “invests” in distressed companies, not all of which are beyond redemption, in order to strip off any assets from which profit can be turned and condemn the rest of the company and employees to the scrapheap.

We applaud him because the distressed company on which he feasted was the former Rangers but a guy like Whyte would just as easily have closed down any football club, including our own, in order to line his pockets.

Guys like him have been on the go since Reagan and Thatcher gave them the green light to “capitalism red in tooth and claw”. They raided pension schemes, employee benefits and even employees offering free labour, whilst they pretended to be saving a company whilst they stripped out all value and placed it in their own accounts.

It is a distasteful activity wherever it occurs.

And so, Craig Whyte is no hero of mine either.

I know full well that SDM’s practices and policies created the situation from which Craigy sniffed out an opportunity to profit and the Rangers fans’ subservient attituddes allowed this fraud to take place under their very noses. However, Craig Whyte’s willingness to adopt the “patsy” role has actually helped David Murray divest the blame for the situation arising and I see no signs that this false version will not persist for some time.

There may be some cards still to be played but, as it stands, Craig Whyte has walked away with a Not Guilty verdict and will need to live his life away from Scotland for quite some time.

The court transcripts have outlined the complicity of SDM in this mess but Donald Findlay chose not to press this home as his main task was just to get his client off, not to prosecute the truly guilty.

As it stands, the tune that will play out is that SDM and Rangers fans were duped and that justice was not done towards the google eyed Monaco vulture capitalist.

I can’t help feeling we are being duped too as our ice cream curdles within the jelly.

Lisbon Sclaffbaw: Last and final update:

After collection of monies and paying all outstanding’s we had a surplus of app 135 euros. This has been made up to £150 and transferred to BRTH for the Road to Lisbon fund.

This was a great wee Celtic event and the Belas Club De Campo staff also deserve a mention for allowing us to host the Spirit of 67 Lisbon sclaffbaw event at their course, and for bending the normal rigid rules of sclaffbaw etiquette and allowing me to play in a dress code that was pertinent to the day.

Surrogates do not usually get hung out to dry by their mentors.

It seems a wee bit more messy than that.

I stand by “Patsy”, though he proved to be more slippery and less compliant with the role than SDM expected. He was “duped” by CW’s criminal ingenuity- I think he underestimated someone whom he considered a useful scapegoat idiot.

    unless….

    unless…

There was conspiracy involving SDM, CW and the Scottish Courts to guarantee a scot free verdict.

If CW was a surrogate- what did he actually make out of doing SDM’s dirty work?
