Columbian forward Camilo Duran is a relatively late developer. He was playing fourth-tier football in Portugal three years ago. Two moves later he pitched up at Azerbaijani champions Qarabag, which he enjoyed his breakthrough season. Now 24, he is in Scotland for a medical with Celtic having agreed terms for his transfer.
It was his stats in last season’s Champions League that got him the move: five goals in 10 games. That compares favourably with nine in 30 Azerbaijani league games, the reasons why he prospered more in Europe than domestically is informative.
One of Camilo’s main attributes is his mobility, he attacks space and is known for pressing opponents when out of possession and there is not too much of that in domestic football for Qarabag. They lost out on the title for only the second time in 13 years last term and face deep-sitting defences in almost every game. This explains why the player flourished against better opposition and will reflect what he can expect should his deal go through at Celtic.
Physically, he looks more like a winger than a striker, someone who will time runs into the box, not a player who can hold his position against a central defender or compete in the air. The same could be said about Kyogo, whose perpetual motion outdone opponents’ best efforts to subdue him, but that is a high bar to compare to.

If he can score against good teams he should be able to score against poor teams. We need to get back to moving the ball quicker, creating overloads, having more movement, etc. Good coaching and a few quality signings to replace what we have lost would be a decent start. Let’s see….
At 5 10 I think he is more a winger than a hold the ball up striker , anyway we need good player in the squad, hopefully he is decent.

Performance last night was typical of a pre-season friendly. No stand out performance. Just minutes under the belt.
It must have shown the watching DD just how short we are of any quality. We have lost about 12 players from the squad and no replacements yet
Like most of players Celtic sign, I’ve never heard of him so will not proffer an opinion on his potential but sincerely wish him all the best.
Going back to the “red flag” article of the other day, I suppose Duran ticks the boxes. On reading his CV one of the first things that crossed my mind was that he seems the type of player Jamestown Analytics would have identified before his move to Qarabag. However, as someone pointed out yesterday, signing prospects for £300k from the second tier of any league would go down like a bag of sick so Celtic trade off paying more money for more evidence of ability. Whether this skews the probability of success in their favour, I’m not clever enough to say.
What I will say is they need to develop a repeatable process that delivers success 55-60% of the time with the benchmark for success being clearly defined. Again, what that benchmark should be, I’m not clever enough to say.

On the question about how many players Celtic have lost from last season, should we perhaps be less alarmist? While acknowledging that the gaps are there, they may be nowhere near what some in the media would have us believe.
All 6 of the loan players returned to their parent clubs; Saracchi, Araujo, Čvančara, Arthur, Adamu, and Mvuka. Mixed contributions from this group, with only the first two considered good enough to be part of the Celtic first team squad IMO.
Of the 2 free agents, the club appears to have passed on Kelechi while re-signing AOC. Not really sure that this is consistent with how most fans felt about the respective contributions of these two players.
It is confirmed that 4 players have already exited the club; Palma, Welsh, Schmeichel and Inamura, though of this list only the veteran goalkeeper featured significantly last season.
At the same time, we have loanees returning to the club; Kenny, Yamada and Nawrocki. We have no idea if MON considers them as viable members of the first team squad, but they are already getting preseason minutes, so we will see.
The greater concern would be the players who are most likely to be sold that contributed heavily last season; Maeda, Engels, Nygren, and Hatate.
Working on some basic assumptions, then ….
LOANS; Johnston stays, then we will not miss Araujo at RB, while IMO all 3 of our returning loanees are better than the loan players that we have lost in their specific positions; Kenny for Adamu, Yamada for Cvancara, and Nawrocki for Arthur.
SIGNINGS; Duran does get officially confirmed, then we are likely seeing him as a replacement for the almost certain departure of Maeda.
RETURNS; we also have CCV back from injury who will effectively be like a new signing, and who knows if Jota can return to fitness and be close to his old self.
RESETS; Balikwisha cannot possibly be as bad as he appeared, so perhaps there is a player there.
KICKING ON; both Murray and Donovan got some good experience last season, and there is reason to believe that they can develop further.
PROSPECTS; a host of academy players made the squad yesterday, and while McArdle probably offers most hope, we could also see others progressing to the senior squad.
It should be noted that there is additional risk of interest in Johnston, even Trusty and perhaps even Yang (despite his new deal). But, if we were to replace players sold one for one, and of similar caliber, then this would mean that the overall quality of our squad could be back to much the same level that it was last season.
Now here is the kicker. That would still leave us without a primary striker, and we are painfully aware that squad was not good enough to get into the UCL, plus it was barely good enough to triumph on the domestic front.
Over to our desperately underperforming board to not only fill the gaps, but raise the bar. How confident are we that this will happen??

Whats wrong with having a couple of strong players for key positions.If we had gone out and tried to get Aurajo,Sarrachi,back,that would have been good buisness.If AJ stays,we have greàt back up for both FBs.

I have come round to offering the whole stadium up to season cards now, all 59,300 as season card sales, and having a ticket exchance scheme,
also use it for 80% of the games or lose it, no more auto renew options for the non-attendees, its seat blocking for sentimental reasons rather than good business sense and denying others the opportunity to attend.
Those sells out fixtures , Huns and Hearts, everyone knows there were more than 60,000 in the ground ……
