What took us to Japan

272

One small compensation for Martin O’Neill is that Daizen Maeda will not have his usual post-international break recuperation requirement following in a fortnight.  Japan take on Scotland at Hampden tomorrow before facing England at Wembley a week later.  You get the feeling the player could benefit from getting away from Celtic business for a while, without the costs associated with a 36 hour journey.

It is an underappreciated fact how important Japanese football has been to Celtic over the last five years.  Without Kyogo, Daizen and Reo Hatate, our trophy count would be less (perhaps significantly) and our transfer spend would be significantly higher.  We went all in on Japan for a while, then, after diminishing returns, lost faith in the strategy.  Recent scattergun approaches have been incoherent.

The premise that took us to Japan still stands.  It is a fertile and under-scouted territory.  We should be back in earnest.

  1. Just been informed, the charity night they had at Celtic Park there, the organizers were charged,£1,500.

  2. How much do the GB charge when collecting, sorting, organizing, delivering items for the various Food Banks that would be empty if not for their great endeavours?

Now that is the Celtic ethos.

£1,500,should hang their heads in shame.

Johnny Kenny has one goal for Bolton, and remains our top scoring striker although he left in January. The striker ‘situation’ like others, has been well posted before, but with seven league games left IMO it’s been a major factor in 3rd place. Even poor Wilfried might have gotten out of jail had we a functioning No 9.

Celtic without one, and a non existent midfield has haunted us, Nygren CalMac Hatate isn’t a battle cry, AOC’s has shown touches but no fitness to match. Adding a £25M player we didn’t know we had till he was nearly gone, is a must for the run in. The question of why MON insists on two wide, lingers, we might try a regular 4 with two up front, Bernardo or McCowan in the starting to add to Engels, CalMac, Hatate.

Cvancara seems the best option of the January cavalry to try and fill the gap, and find a focal striker but old MON doesn’t have his troubles to seek since the shock Tannadice flop. Two up top including Nygren maybe be a Cup option trial.

  24. lets all do the huddle on

today is a waste of a weekend day.

    theres nothing on.

    no football.

the golf and horse racing are low key.

  26. Yes why 2 wingers at all times? , when one or both are not producing, it’s not working, why can’t MON not see this, it’s madness.

  27. The Wolfe Tones Lyrics

    “Sean South Of Garryowen”

Sad are the homes ’round Garryowen

Since lost their joy and pride

And the banshee cry links every vale

    Along the Shannonside

That city of the ancient walls

    Unbroken treaty stone

    Undying fame surrounds your name

    Sean South from Garryowen

‘Twas on a dreary New Year’s Eve

As the shades of night came down

A lorry-load of volunteers approached the border town

There were men from Dublin and from Cork, Fermanagh, and Tyrone

And their leader was a Limerick man

    Sean South from Garryowen

And as they moved along the street up to the barracks door

They scorned the danger they might face

Their fate that lay in store

They were fighting for old Ireland

    To claim their very own

And the foremost of that gallant band

    Was South from Garryowen

But the sergeant spied their daring plan

He spied them through the door

The Sten guns and the rifles, a hail of death did pour

And when that awful night was past

Two men lay as cold as stone

There was one from near the border

    And one from Garryowen

No more he will hear the seagull’s cry

    O’er the murmuring Shannon tide

For he fell beneath a northern sky, brave Hanlon by his side

They have gone to join that gallant band

    Of Plunkett, Pearse, and Tone

    A martyr for old Ireland

    Sean South from Garryowen
