What would Neil Do?

491

It all starts for real next week but, unlike most previous Celtic managers who finds significant interest in his star player, Neil Lennon is pretty chilled when talking about the player moving on.  I want to keep Victor, he reminds me of a young Keane (Roy), Neil will want to keep him too, but you have to wonder, what the manager would do with some cash to spend.

Only just catching up with CQN and the UK media, is anyone still interested in the big ball game?  Delighted to hear the man from Dunblane got his just rewards.  The excellent BBC documentary on him two weeks ago touched on issues you and me and not qualified to touch on here, but there is a great humanity story wrapped up in his achievement.

Our paucity of sporting genetic raw material is apparently untrue.  From a (temporary) distance it’s evident he has branded the Scots better than any grappling politician ever could.

The independence argument isn’t a party political one, whichever way you slice it. You can groan at Alex Salmond’s flag waving carry on yesterday (personally I thought it looked a bit desperate) without being a Labour party voter.

I distrust nationalism for many reasons; why should i align myself with someone based on the fact we both share the same arbitrarily defined land mass? I’ve been to Barcelona more times than I’ve been to Aberdeen, been to New York more times than I’ve been to Inverness. What defines us in life is our economic condition, rather than oru national one. I’m a social democrat, what is there in the current political apparatus of the UK preventing me from promoting that agenda? Why does it need to have a focus that is particularly, and narrowly, Scottish? Have I mroe in common with the members of my economic grouping in Bradford than I do with fishermen in Skye? probably. Why am I so keen to align my interests with people purely based on where they were born? No, nationalism is far too narrow a concept for me.

What concerns me about independence is where the money is going to come from. Compared with England, we’ve got a massive public sector. The public sector drives the private in this country far more than it does in other parts of the UK. Where is the money going to come from?

The Yes Scotland campaign offers a vision of an Independent Scotland but, to be frank, it hasn’t got a clue about how it is going to end up there. Is the juice worth the squeeze? I’m far, far from convinced it is. And that’s why the referendum will finish up with a no vote. It isn’t a depressing lack of national confidence which will result in a No vote, as some of the supporters of independence I’ve met seem to suggest, it’s a pragmatic one.

Also, comparing Scotland with India in the 50s, or Kenya in the 60s, or Ireland in the last century, is nonsense. We simply have not had the same experience of empire and Union as they have.

Each of us knows where our vote would go,so little point in a debate.

The slum areas you refer to are echoed in large parts of the UK as a whole, and in most countries in the West.

Independence will NOT solve the problems to which you refer-IMO-but will likely worsen them.

For me,a GIRUY vote in the face of economic reality is not a wise option.

But you are entitled to both an opinion and a vote.

I have only one of those options!

Neil wants to spend money on existing players salaries, the last manager to do(The vastly overrated( O’neil),meant we were unable to buy decent players for ages and it cost us,if all our players stay we still need several new recruits and not just the two more being quoted if we lose any they have to replaced by equal quality

Sydney ‘Billy” Have you ever posted anything positive about Celtic? Mid Field is Celtic’s strongest area with cover in many areas: Broony, Kayal, Charlie, Rogic, Ledly, Effie and also the young guns.

I met your fellow Sydney members in Vegas. They were much more positive about the current Celtic position than you are.

Why don’t you give the present, board, management and team a bit of a pat on the back: A league and cup double, last 16 in Champions League; young team with great sell on potential: $15,000,00 Australian for Vic:

Gies us a break and lighten up and post something positive from down under.

  12. If your vote on independence is to be based purely on an economic then why not develop that argument and take it to its logical conclusion.

And put Scotland up for sale.

See who will offer you the best deal.

China might be interested. Foothold into the EU and the European marketplace.

  15. Kayal to fill Vic’s departure?

    Lets compare.

Vic wins tackles and Kayal disnae.

Vic passes to team mates and Kayal mostly passes to opponents.

Vic has brilliant positional sense and Kayal has none.

Vic will leave a large hole to fill but Kayal is certainly not up to it.

Would rather give a youngster the chance.

    Kayal should be punted

I think the Unionist camp will jump on anything to berate Salmond. They need to because he is by far the most impressive politician in the UK by a country mile.

A bit of saltire waving behind poor David Cameron (aww diddums). It might not have been Slamond’s finest moment but as a proud Scot watching another proud Scot winning Wimbledon it was hardly crime of the century.

I also find it a source of amusement that there are many on CQN who would champion an independent Ireland but are horrified at the prospect of an independent Scotland.

All the people of Scotland have a right to deabte the pros and cons of an independent Scotland in a mature and calm atmosphere.

  20. I agree that Kayal is no replacement for Big Vic. And with Broony’s fitness in doubt, I cannot agree that our midfield is strong. In fact, without Vic and Broony I think we’ll struggle badly, certainly against decent European teams.

Keep Big Vic. If he goes, bring in a genuine replacement.

Well said pal. A LOT of people need to get a grip on here and elsewhere.

Is what Alex Salmond did playing politics while supporting a Scottish sportsman and promoting Scotland – YES.

Is there anything wrong with that? NO

    It’s his job.

If he hadn’t been there people would be saying where was he? It’s disrespectful because Murray calls himself British bla bla bla.

For the record, Murray used to call himself Scottish in several interviews when called British or English until years of abuse from nasty pieces of work coincided with a change and now say the word British. He is playing to the crowd as much as any politician.

Well done Andy. I congratulate you on an epic win. I was and am so happy and the fact you hail from my country makes me happier still – even though I had nothing to do with it. The first SCOT to win Wimbledon for 117 years.

As for Alex Salmond here’s a wee quotation for you which has not appeared today as far as I can see and I find it quite strange on this site in particular that it has not –

‘It’s right up there, it’s up there with Chris Hoy, or Celtic and the European Cup.

‘It’s an amazing victory” – Alex Salmond

    Hmmmm

Somehow I don’t think that quotation will be in the scrapbook of some posters ready to attack him at the intake of a breath and we won’t be seeing it dragged out every week when the need for attack takes hold..

I’ve got news for you – plenty of politicians do this worldwide. It gets cheers most of the time but sadly Scotland has too many haters.

Also – The Welsh First Minister was on a free holiday watching the Lions and supporting his boys who are arguably the backbone of that team at the moment. Where’s all the outrage regarding that? Isn’t that a political stunt? Radio silence but does that not matter because he’s Welsh?

I’m not looking to make comments at any poster but looking around here and elsewhere on the web I’d like to make one small comparison – examine the comments made about Alex Salmond over this issue and the hatred towards him expressing where he’s from and being unashamed of doing so, examine all the insults, the hate and bile and then do one little thing – remove the context and replace the words Alex Salmond with Neil Lennon.

Some people simply hate the man and it is verging on pathological as it does for our good friends on the South side of Glasgow.

Before anyone starts I know damn well Alex Salmond has done bad things and I know he has not had to put up with an iota of what Neil Lennon has but here’s the thing – I’m only talking about the words being used. Hate is hate, some people out there are spitting blood in the same fashion as the nutters do towards Neil lennon. Crying about a man expressing National Pride for his country and supporting someone from that country while never moaning about anyone else doing it is hypocrisy and says far more about the individuals and groups involved.

Gordon Brown driving around with England (not UK) flags on his car when England were in the World cup? No problem.

Alex Salmond goes to Wimbledon to support a Scot? How dare you! Who do you think you are?

Hypocrisy seems to sit well with some people.

As a Political stunt it is genius – all the unionist’s heads are exploding and it is exposing them and their hatred badly.

Good on you Alex and don’t forget He mentioned Andy Murray, Chris Hoy and Celtic in the same breath. He didn’t need to mention us and he could have chosen any other footballing event like beating England in 1967 but he chose Celtic.

    Hail Hail.
