What’s it to you, Charlie?

The news yesterday that HMRC would appeal the decision by the First Tier Tribunal (FTT) to reject the part of their tax demand against former club Rangers which was still open to dispute was received by most with passing interest.  The FTT returned a split decision, with the minority view giving HMRC substantial grounds for an appeal, and as we have heard often in recent years, HMRC always pursue tax under various circumstances.  Reasons include when they believe wrongdoing has occurred.

As such, it seemed strange that The Rangers chief executive, Charles Green, issued a statement on the subject yesterday as the on-going tax dispute “will have no affect (sic.) on us”.  He also wrote “in the strongest possible terms to HMRC pointing out the futility of such an appeal”.

If Green expects HMRC to read this letter and to countenance a change of tact he has a regard for his own abilities which are, frankly, a little curious.  No mere mortal could write a letter and bring about any change in such a dispute, which leads us to another question, is Charles Green a mere mortal, or does his aim occasionally stretch beyond his reach?  I’m sure we’re not dealing with a Self-Certified-Superman.

The point to this exercise is that while Green’s newco is not liable for another company’s taxes, his football club inherited the SFA place vacated by Rangers, including pesky football liabilities.  Fifa and SFA rules on paying social taxes are clear – avoid them illegally and face disciplinary action.

As the matter is on-going, the football authorities have yet to issue any disciplinary action for the non-payment of taxes for the five players Rangers conceded to the FTT.  Should the courts ultimately decide in favour of HMRC for the balance of players still being disputed, a fresh wave of disciplinary measures would be due against Green’s club.

Last summer we discussed how the toxicity which was attached to the club Craig Whyte inherited, and then relinquished in a worse state, would make going forward as a Newco with any connection whatsoever to the SFA membership of Oldco very difficult.  Many, including the Blue Knights consortium, concluded it didn’t look viable.

It still doesn’t. Scottish football needs to consider how to deal with the long term consequences of these matters.

Commons had an unbelievable start to his Celtic career. He played in 21 matches (18 starts) and scored 14 goals and 5 assists. He averaged a goal/assist every 81 minutes.

You’d have to go back to 2007 to cover a period over which Paddy has scored 14 goals in professional football.

Ki earned as over £6m. He is considered one of the brightest young talents to come out of Asian football. He was not totally comfortable playing for Celtic, I agree, and I don;t think time will show we saw the best of him. That season he scored 4 and assisted 7 times whilst playing 2383 minutes. Albeit in a deeper role. I think Paddy was more consistent in those 7 games than Ki tended to show, so I’m with you there.

But it would be very hard to have argued Paddy should have started before Commons (and I am more agnostic about Commons than many on here).

  8. The one , and only, time I attended a rugby international was Scotland v Ireland in the mid-1980s(?).

A business associate had been given 3 tickets by his company – a well-known confectionery firm – with pre-match hospitality in a 5 star(!) hotel in Embra. He invited me and his nephew and we had a lovely meal and a few drinks, and were then taken by coach to the game.

Must be honest and say that my mind was never really on the game – because on that very same day Celtic were playing Hertz at Tynecastle in the Scottish Cup, and from my seat I could make out parts of the ground.

Scotland won – but Celtic lost 1-0!

To make matters worse my 2 companions – both Embra natives, devout Catholics were also Hertz fans!

They both spent the night in Embra but I decided to head home, and had a fantastic train journey to Glasgow with the Irish fans – the drink was flowing! Dont remember much after that!

I think I got home on the Tuesday – I was still unmarried at the time.

    Just as well!

    TLK,

It wasn’t hard to argue at the time and its still no, great stats for Commons happened at the expense of Paddy, nothing there to show what Paddy might have achieved had he been given the run we all agreed he needed.

Also with Ki, liked the guy when he turned up but 1in 5 was not good enough, would never have had Ki over Paddy in a month of Sundays.

In both cases IMO managers fav, form matters little.

Once I started working through here I couldn’t believe the amount of Catholic Jambo’s. They appear to choose their team in Edinburgh on where they live in relation to the ground (local team) so to speak.

It is not uncommon to have fathers/sons/brothers/etc all supporting a mixture of Hearts & Hibs.

Strange lot through here. Except the Tims of course. I haven’t came across many Edinburgh based Rangers fans tho. I might just be lucky!

  14. Only been to rugby once – in Worcester Christmas before last. Got to the ground about an hour before kick-off for a few drinks. Guy with us for another round in during the 2nd half. More drinks purchased at half time and same guy nipped out during the 2nd half to get a round. Headed into one of the lounges after the game to get a drink and order a taxi.

Met up with the wife back in town to go for a meal. I too was unmarried for a wee while until the wife saw the funny side of my somewhat slurry, heavy Glasgow accent trying to order Tiger Beer from the Thai waiter who was more used to mid-Englandshire accents.

Couldn’t tell you if I enjoyed the game but I got some dirty looks for cussing the ref.

Done a wee bit more digging. Commons and McCourt have NEVER started in the same team together. It is a fair assumption to say the manager will only ever pick one of them.

I believe the stats I produced for Commons in 2010/11 would make him pretty undroppable.

During 2011/12, Commons suffered from sendings off and injury and was not as available. Between 21st Aug and 14th Jan Commons only started 4 games and was subbed on them all. McCourt started 2 matches in that time. The manager preferred combinations of Forrest, Hooper, Stokes and Samaras in attacking areas. Kayal, Ki and Wanyama were regular in centre mid, with Ledley/Mulgrew moved around to accommodate the loss of Izaguirre / provide natural left footedness on the left.

I am not sure there is a consistent favourite above McCourt albeit an on form Commons will always be picked ahead of him. I just don’t think he fits, or is better than, the other players available for the attacking midfield and wide positions.

What we don’t know is how he is at training, how he gets on with the other players and the manager, and the myriad other issues that might be at play including fitness statistics.

I like Paddy a lot, and it is a shame it has not worked out.

  30. The problem with Paddy is that Lenny has not got the courage to play a roving player.Paddy should be in the team and told to follow the ball and make things happen,if we cannot allow this freedom to our most natural gifted player then we truly have problems. The SPL standard is very poor but our manager insist on playing negative midfield players.Have a look at the pool of players from other SPL teams, they are free transfers from the bottom rungs of English football, scots that couldn’t make it elsewhere and young boys starting out on their career.
