When directors and creditors are one and the same

1069

Thanks to everyone who contributed questions for the Forum last night.  It was an open, frank and productive meeting.  Draft minutes will be distributed to attendees to be checked for accuracy before being formalised, after which the meeting’s outcomes will be made public through various outlets.

One thing which is evident, and goes largely unacknowledged, is the significant contribution made by Auldheid in building the channels needed for constructive dialogue between the club and supporters.  Well done, Pat.

I see Neil Lennon in the news being “flattered” after Norwich City chief exec, and former Celtic commercial director, David McNally, told the media he believed it only prudent he keeps an eye open for a new manager, should Chris Hughton ‘leave’.  Neil answered well, refused to comment on a job which is already filled, while setting a standard answer, suitable whether he was interested or not.  There is no point firmly denying interest in a job as a subsequent refusal to do so for a different position would leave too much information on the table.

McNally is right, it is only prudent you keep an eye on these things, but can you imagine how Hughton feels when reading this stuff, or what the resulting speculation will do to the club’s relegation chances?  There is now far too much information on the table now for Hughton to be effective.

A football manager needs authority and respect, Houghton has been denied both.  Norwich should do the decent thing and pay the man his contract before they sleepwalk into the lower leagues.

It’s funny how different people read the same thing in different ways.  An announcement that a club is in discussions with a couple of existing shareholders to borrow money to provide working capital is self-explanatory in most respects.

The announcement by Newco Rangers this morning establishes that the club needs a fresh injection of money to pay its bills.  We all knew this, but the sharp-eyed will also have noted that this loan will create the club’s two major creditors.  No bank will lend to Newco, their creditors will be limited to trade suppliers, HMRC and other football clubs, all pretty low values.  This £1.5m loan is likely to give the lenders sufficient control to vote through anything they desire, should administration occur.  The controlling directors and creditors will be one and the same.

Newco Rangers has been rag-dolled since its inception by various pressure groups within the broader family who seem determined to stamp on whatever green shoots of recovery exist.  What it really needs is the kind of strong leadership this directors-creditors group can provide, leaders who will do the right thing, take the necessary medicine and stand firm against the quislings.  While others tried to get the club for free, they paid their money, continue to do so, and deserve the chance to run their club as they see fit.  For what it’s worth I think the club and its current controllers are a perfect fit.  I hope they use their largest creditor status to protect their interests.

Congratulations to STV’s Peter Smith (aged 12 ½), who scooped the Royal Television Society’s Young Talent of the Year award, achieved partly because he was prepared and able to ask hard questions, when many of his elder peers would rather eat their own toe nails.  He’s still not uncovered that Dallas Cowboys email, so more work still to be done.

    Dear Kharida Khan

At our recent AGM I outlined our intention to undertake a comprehensive review of the entire Club and I am pleased to report that we are making excellent progress with this.

A key element of looking at how the Club operates and engages is to understand what is important to you, the Rangers supporters. If we can obtain your constructive input and suggestions then we can develop a comprehensive insight into what is needed to address the areas that are important to the fans.

We are in the process of rebuilding how your Club operates and based on feedback from many of you, it is clear that there is a need for professional business management, honest conversation, transparency and greater communication to allow us to move forward together.

Your Club Executive and Board is wholly open minded on how we can work together for the better development of Rangers.

The Club, and you the supporters, have continued to be tested in recent months as we work on developing the long term strategy for rebuilding the Club. We need you to know that by working together, we have the ability to position your Club for a stable, successful and sustainable future.

We hope that you will engage with the Club and talk to us openly. We value your input and we are Ready to Listen.

To start us on this journey together, I would ask if you could take a few minutes to complete this short survey which will give you the opportunity to commence the process of sharing your thoughts and opinions with us. We will consolidate all input received and use this as the basis upon which to move our wider supporter engagement initiatives forward.

Please click here to start survey.

    Thank you for your support.

As I said yesterday, Ledley(and Hooper imo) would have stayed.

    ———-

Joe Ledley: I thought I would stay at Celtic

    Thursday, 20 February 2014

    By Richard Cawley

JOE Ledley has revealed that he was all set to sign to sign a contract extension at Celtic – but that the Scottish giant’s decision to accept a bid from Crystal Palace told him it was time to go.

The 27-year-old midfielder made the move to Selhurst Park on the final day of the January transfer window. He jetted in from Glasgow to pen a deal until the summer of 2017.

Ledley was inside the final six months of his contract at Celtic, where he won the SPL title twice and the Scottish Cup once. But the Cardiff-born midfielder admits he was leaning towards staying.

“There was a contract offer there and I was just weighing up my options,” he explained. “Not long before in January I’d said to some of the boys I was going to re-sign. Then a week later I’m signing at Palace. That’s football.

“I was sat at home and my agent rang and said a bid had been accepted and it is down to you to talk to them. At first I didn’t know what to think. But if a club has accepted an offer then it is time to go. Your mind is sort of made up. I ended up coming down and speaking with the gaffer. I felt it was a fantastic challenge. They sold the club to me. I thought it was time to go and play in the Premier League.”

Ledley was linked to top-flight switches throughout his time at Cardiff City.

Palace boss Tony Pulis tried to sign him on two occasions while in charge at Stoke, failing with multi-million pound bids.

“I spoke to him before I went to Celtic but things just didn’t work out,” said the Welsh international. “So this is third time lucky to play under him. I’m loving every minute. He’s a good manager, very professional.

“He is very organised with the squad. Everyone needs to give 100 per cent. It’s a great squad, everyone is down to earth and works hard for each other.

“It was difficult for me to leave Celtic. I’m not going to lie. It is a fantastic club. I had everything there. I’ve got great memories and it will always be in my heart.

“One of my favourite moments has got to be winning 2-1 against Barcelona in the Champions League at home. It was a fantastic achievement for the team. I got Xavi’s shirt afterwards – which is not bad! He is one of the best passers of the ball. It is the best competition in the world – without a shadow of doubt – and I’m lucky to have had two seasons in it. You face your heroes.

“Another would be when I scored against Rangers at home. We were 15 points behind at the time but we won and it gave us the lift we needed to go on and win the league.

“But now it is time for me to go and show the Premier League what I can do. It is a short career and it is every boy’s dream to play there. This is my time to do it. I don’t have any regrets.”

Ledley’s beginning to life in English football’s top-flight could not have started any better.

He was only 27 minutes into his debut for Palace when he headed in Tom Ince’s corner to give the South Londoner’s a 2-0 lead over West Bromwich Albion. They went on to record a 3-1 victory that inched them closer to the 40 point mark that usually signals safety.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better debut,” said Ledley. “To score was the icing on the cake.

“It is good to be off the mark. I can always say I’ve scored in the Premier League – that can’t be taken away from me now.

“There were a lot of bodies in the box and I managed to lose my marker and just rise above the keeper.”

Ledley played a large chunk of the Baggies match at left-back, only moving into his usual midfield position when Jonathan Parr was brought on as Palace shifted to a 4-5-1 formation.

“It’s not a regular role for me and I haven’t played there for a couple of years,” he said. “I’ve probably only done it 10 times in my whole career. But I didn’t mind one bit. It worked out for me and the team. I’ll go wherever the gaffer asks me to play.”

One fixture that leaps out for Ledley is the trip to Cardiff on April 5 – his first time back there as a player since he left in 2010.

“Of course I’m looking forward to going back there,” he said. “I went there and supported them when I was a kid. I still have a look out for their results.

“I’ll have to see what kind of reception I get. I think I was a good servant to them but you never know what to expect – certain people might boo and some might cheer.

“Hopefully I get a good one. If not, I’ll deal with it. It doesn’t change that I want the three points.”

  17. timaloy29 @13.26 hrs.

Thanks for your reply however, It was only a hypothetical scenario with names flung in as an extra. .

The setting illustrated the fact that a team will get punished possibly three times for the same offence. Penalty ( Goal ) Red card and Suspension.

The better option can be to give the player a free run on goal.

The use of Scott Brown and Neymar was purely for effect reflecting the fact that a good player like Neymar will never need any persuasion to go down and a committed player like Brown can be penalised many times over for an innocuous challenge.

    Sorry for any confusion.
