When directors and creditors are one and the same

1069

Thanks to everyone who contributed questions for the Forum last night.  It was an open, frank and productive meeting.  Draft minutes will be distributed to attendees to be checked for accuracy before being formalised, after which the meeting’s outcomes will be made public through various outlets.

One thing which is evident, and goes largely unacknowledged, is the significant contribution made by Auldheid in building the channels needed for constructive dialogue between the club and supporters.  Well done, Pat.

I see Neil Lennon in the news being “flattered” after Norwich City chief exec, and former Celtic commercial director, David McNally, told the media he believed it only prudent he keeps an eye open for a new manager, should Chris Hughton ‘leave’.  Neil answered well, refused to comment on a job which is already filled, while setting a standard answer, suitable whether he was interested or not.  There is no point firmly denying interest in a job as a subsequent refusal to do so for a different position would leave too much information on the table.

McNally is right, it is only prudent you keep an eye on these things, but can you imagine how Hughton feels when reading this stuff, or what the resulting speculation will do to the club’s relegation chances?  There is now far too much information on the table now for Hughton to be effective.

A football manager needs authority and respect, Houghton has been denied both.  Norwich should do the decent thing and pay the man his contract before they sleepwalk into the lower leagues.

It’s funny how different people read the same thing in different ways.  An announcement that a club is in discussions with a couple of existing shareholders to borrow money to provide working capital is self-explanatory in most respects.

The announcement by Newco Rangers this morning establishes that the club needs a fresh injection of money to pay its bills.  We all knew this, but the sharp-eyed will also have noted that this loan will create the club’s two major creditors.  No bank will lend to Newco, their creditors will be limited to trade suppliers, HMRC and other football clubs, all pretty low values.  This £1.5m loan is likely to give the lenders sufficient control to vote through anything they desire, should administration occur.  The controlling directors and creditors will be one and the same.

Newco Rangers has been rag-dolled since its inception by various pressure groups within the broader family who seem determined to stamp on whatever green shoots of recovery exist.  What it really needs is the kind of strong leadership this directors-creditors group can provide, leaders who will do the right thing, take the necessary medicine and stand firm against the quislings.  While others tried to get the club for free, they paid their money, continue to do so, and deserve the chance to run their club as they see fit.  For what it’s worth I think the club and its current controllers are a perfect fit.  I hope they use their largest creditor status to protect their interests.

Congratulations to STV’s Peter Smith (aged 12 ½), who scooped the Royal Television Society’s Young Talent of the Year award, achieved partly because he was prepared and able to ask hard questions, when many of his elder peers would rather eat their own toe nails.  He’s still not uncovered that Dallas Cowboys email, so more work still to be done.

  7. most hyped and self nominated best league in the world took a bit of a beating again last night eh

I remember late 60’s early 70 England had a different team as Champions most years,it was a healthy robust league which seemed to have challengers popping up based only on their football ability, the Liverpool era occurred but there was still strong competition around the league.

It kind of saddens me that it now appears to be income based, primarily from TV deal. The football is to use a phrase ‘NBA’ football tho this won engenders financial panic if they dont make the top4 or a nightmare if they end up squabbling in a 10/12 team relegation fight.

I would argue the whole direction of the league is set against avoiding relegation with the majority of the teams as fodder for the top 4\6 teams. In my younger day the general push was to the top of the league.

I missed the original point made by Auldheid, and though that has not stopped me before, I am guessing it involved the relative importance of Scottish Labour votes re UK general elections. Even looking at it the way you have done, ie take out all Scottish MPs, I cannot make your numbers add up. October 1974. Labour, with Scottish MPs 319, (out of 635) an overall majority, without, 278 (out of 564), a clear minority. Or meringue again?

  21. rangers fans getting a grip on reality is about as likely as flying pigs….

Still its good to see them squabbling publically it means this phrase is bollox as far as they are concerned

Where there is discord may there be harmony….maggie thatch

‘Get a grip’ says Rangers PR guru

RANGERS PR guru Jack Irvine today said fans need to “get a grip on reality” amid financial fears at the Ibrox club.

The row broke out as chief executive Graham Wallace and manager Ally McCoist today launched an initiative to enhance fan engagement.

The first phase of Ready to Listen is a survey designed to give supporters a “genuine voice” in the future of their club.

More than 1.2 million Rangers fans will be contacted with the survey through email, text messgae, social media, and matchday activity.

Wallace said: “We need fans to know that by working together, we have the ability to position the club for a stable, successful and sustainable future.

“We hope supporters will engage with the Club and talk to us openly. We value their input and we are ready to listen.”

Earlier today, Rangers confirmed to the Stock Exchange they are in talks with investors over a £1.5million loan.

The Easdale brothers and Laxey Partners, the largest single shareholder in Rangers International Football Club, are prepared to lend the club money.

Although no agreement has been finalised, it is understood the money would be repaid in the form of shares rather than cash.

Fears about an imminent cash-flow problem are growing among fans, although Wallace is adamant there are enough funds to continue trading.

Rangers Supporters’ Association chief, Drew Roberton, said: “This latest move certainly suggests there are short-term cash issues.

“Administration is still a fear for fans.

“I know Mr Wallace has said it is not an issue and it’s not going to happen again.

“But I don’t think today’s announcment is something that makes fans feel that administration won’t happen.

“It is very difficult for fans’ fears to be alleviated.”

It is understood that Rangers’ cash reserves are diminishing.

Jack Irvine, Rangers spokesman, said: “It is ludicrious for fans’ organisation to be making this claim.

“They have to get a grip on reality.”…..

Launching Ready to Listen, McCoist said: “Our fans have shown unbelievable passion, commitment and support for their Club since the dark days of administration.

“It is only right our loyal fanbase has a major say going forward.”

The next significant batch of income will be not arrive until season ticket renewals begin to come in during the summer.

Wallace, who is in the midst of a 120-day review of every aspect of Rangers’ business, admitted after the annual meeting of shareholders last year that cost-cutting is required.

The statement read: “The Board of Rangers confirms that it is holding discussions with two major shareholders with a view to arranging a loan of up to £1.5m to provide working capital for the company.

“Documentation and terms have not been finalised, and a further announcement will be made when appropriate.”

The loan from James Easdale, who is a director of Rangers International Footbal Club plc, and Sandy Easdale, a director of Rangers Football Club, and Laxey Partners would be up to £1.5m, and the repayment in shares would be happen at some point in the next 12 monthsthat some Rangers directors were in London yesterday meeting shareholders.

Mr Roberton added: “It is good to see directors putting their money where their mouth is.

“And I hope this deal is more beneficial for Rangers than the people putting the money in.

“But I am sceptical that it will be a better deal for the club.

“It has been well documented that the previous financial director Brian Stockbridge beleieved the financial low point for the club would be april.

“But it seems that Stockbridge’s forecast was optimistic.”

Any lending of funds would be seen as a vote of confidence in Wallace, although setting aside 120 days to review the business of a football club – which is fairly straightforward – is seen as a reflection of the difficult issues he faces.
