25 years ago, Scotland were due to play a World Cup qualification game against Belarus on the day of Princess Diana’s funeral. The SFA, then run by chief exec Jim Farry, the same man who was eventually removed from office for delaying Celtic’s registration of Jorge Cadete, decided the game should proceed as planned.
Whatever you think of Farry, he acted without concern for the royalist contingent. Despite the SFA’s offices being vandalised and Scottish Secretary, Donald Dewer, applying political pressure, Farry dug in: ”We have taken heed of the various viewpoints, but let’s be reasonable about this, life does and must go on.”
He did not act alone, the SFA International Committee were involved, and they included Celtic’s Jack McGinn, and the Greatest Football Administrator the world has ever known, Campbell Ogilvie! This was a strange time in Britain, maybe the strangest few weeks of the last century.
Royalists were split between backers of the self-styled Queen of Hearts (honestly), and those in the minority, who sided with the actual Queen. The Queen, a bit like Farry, held out as long as she could against the indulgent wallowing infecting millions, by resisting calls to lower flags to half-mast.
Before the end of the week, royal flags were lowered and the Scotland game was postponed. Those of us who never took an interest in royalty were often heard saying “Let’s be reasonable about this”, but were largely ignored.

I was really surprised by how small the Real Madrid support was there @ the Holy Ground.
Carlo will have let Ange know he has a Real Deal Holyfield team on his hands, methinks, after their chat away from the cameras.
That Scum rag The Sun (the Scottish version) had Ange linked to Brighton asap.
You look into the little things and you see its Rangers and Celtic from Scotland and then by contrast in the same paragraph its Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur from England.
Hun here is news for you, your 2nd Club is 2nd best in Scotland and Always will be.
Just in from cutting the grass and weeding the garden. Asked Mrs Malvinas if we are still under barrage from the “can’t show anything on the telly apart from auld Lizzie brigade”
Looks like it she says apart from The One Show. I said to her The One Show isn’t on a Saturday night. Looked at the preview, yup yet another tribute from the team. Surely Ronan Keating won’t sell himself out ?
If there’s one thing worse than a Scottish arselicker,it’s an Irish one.
Over to you Ronan.
Hopefully I’m on later to apologise to you.
One for you TURKEYBHOY.
Never knew this had happened, Queen Victoria personally intervened to try and stop Ottoman Sultan from donating to help the irish during the famine.
So he did it in secret.
Knew about the help some of the indigenous from USA, i have read a bit about some indigenous cultures from there, but never knew about this Ottoman Sultan.

Just before I go, this is for DALRIADABHOY.
Apologies for the use of the word famine in the post about the Ottoman Sultan assisting during the great hunger.
Burnley,
Leipzig have been doing that all season so far.Hot and cold.
The new manager to me is vastly overrated,as we saw when he was sitting idle.
See how they do against Madrid and next league game.
the next SPL fixtures due 1st Oct.
Dal Buoy,
Yep,all true.Google it.Dont ask me why.Strange story.
Is Boris Johnson a Catholic?
The laws of the Church say he is. He is a member of the Catholic Church by virtue of his Baptism and the laws of the Church mean he will remain a Catholic till his dying day – because Baptism can’t be revoked.
Many people are erroneously under the impression that ex-communication throws a person out of the Church. It merely bars them from receiving all the sacraments except for the sacrament of penance which remains open to them to repent and once again become a Catholic in good standing with the Church.
Boris will remain a Catholic no matter what he does. Those are the rules of the Church.

3-0 Leipzig is some turnaround by the Rose inspired team. So much work to do for us to get anything from this group. Why could they not have sneaked a wee 1-0 win on Tuesday and kept their manager at least until we have played them.
………………………………………………………………………………..
When Manchester City came a calling they had been in incredible form.
As I have said this is the most exciting Celtic team I have witnessed and I want RB to be at their very best as even if we don’t come out favourably in the games against them (I think we will get 4 points) we will learn and develop from playing this Top Class opposition a lot quicker.

Fittingly, part of the musical tribute to Brenda will come from Queen.
The chorus: Deid Already, She’s Deid Already would appear apt.

SCULLYBHOY seen that one and that wasn’t the only time Tommy took Alan Rough to chapel
Story Alan Rough told about Tommy
Alan was on holiday in Spain, he liked a beer out if the footie Season and he had a reputation for not being as fit as he should have been for preseason training he said as much.
Anyway Alan was lying on a sun lounger having a beer.
Tommy Burns jogs past stops speaks to Alan and arranges to meet next day for a 10 mile run the next day.
This kept up all week and Tommy told Alan he would come and pick him up to go to Chapel on the Sunday.
Alan said “Tommy i’m not catholic” Tommy paused for a very brief moment and said it will do you good.
So when Alan signed for Celtic his jog with Tommy at the end of the first training session wasn’t the first time he took him to, or tried to take him to chapel.
Alan went for a 10 mile run with Tommy every day and was fitter for pre-season than he ever had been.
From memory which is fallible, heard this on radio , my memory is either a steel trap or a sieve, but i am certain that the above is an accurate reflection of what i heard on radio.
So puts a bit of context to Tommy taking Alan for a jog to the Chapel on first day of training.
It is quiet clear listening to Alan Rough how much thought of Tommy.

Does signing the oath make Charles the Head of the Church of Scotland? No
Is Charles a member of the Church of Scotland? No
Is Charles now a Presbyterian? No
Can he attend the General Assembly of the Kirk? Yes
Can he take part in the proceedings of the General Assembly? No
Celtic Mac,
Just the Basic Tenets of Christianity is what is sorely needed right here and right now from All.

Charles anti Catholic oath today upholding Protestantism in Scotland was a disgrace in a democracy. I suspect many in the Church of Scotland were shocked by its demanding and menacing content. Apparently, he wants to be defender of all faith. Improbable, if something so manifestly aggressive is part of the conditions in which he inherits the throne. Similarly, the anti Catholic succession rule is a disgrace in a democracy that is supposed to be inclusive and bends over backwards for some, standing truth on its head to do so. It can be changed if there’s the desire and respect.
MadMitch,
I like your contributions to CQN, they get the discussions started.
I am truly puzzled, tbh it disnae take much, as to why you cannae see the Awesomeness of Callum?
He is an Outstanding Player and our Capitano.

ALMORE.
Noticed recently on the blog, you were advising you teach teenagers.
If you were to recommend a book on the Children of Dana/Danu, which one would you recommend?
Same with the Book of Kells and last but not least the Irish Civil War in Cork, particularly anything about senior pro treaty officers being brought into Cork from outside.
I would be most grateful if you or someone you trust would recommend these.
I am dyslexic but am also empathic, i read books in the same manner that the Rasta poet Benjamin Zephaniah does, i have read books that have have made me cold, hot etc
Apologies for the ask, would genuinely be grateful for any suggestions from you.

Big fan of CMcG — slow developer / getting better every year.
Just a case that he has not had a great start to 2022/23.
Plus I have never seen him as a DM / pivot.
I see him as an AM / left MF’er — he has a step / he is mobile / good shot.
Well used to have a good shot — I think that he is not the natural he once was and is over thinking his opportunities.
Our MF balance needs work.
If OA gets a start then someone will need to miss out.
Even AM looks a better bet as a pivot / DM — he is much better positionally.
RH needs to be in team to get us to our highest levels this season.
MO’R is developing very fast and showing signs of being a great talent.
CMcG is the unlucky guy in this context.
Well to me anyway — others will have3 their own opinions.
Good evening all from the Vogue. Read back. More beer required methinks.
Ronan Keating,I owe you an apology.
Never doubted you for a moment son. . . . .
See the arselicking baton has been handed over to a couple of Welsh people.

First home match of the season for the ‘Fightin Irish’ tonight at 7.30pm for those who enjoy American Football.
Irish games at home are pretty special.
It’s the first time Marshall have ever played there but they are a strong team.
Should be a good tie. Irish lost their first game of season on the road last week.

MadMitch,
Thats Good you appreciate how good our Capitano is.
He played that rolle (I love Switzerland) superbly well against RB Leipzig in a Great Win with an Awesome away Support present @ Celtic Park.
I dinnae disagree with you about moving Calmac forward, the Great Dane should facilitate this but Callum has been outstanding in that Pivotal Role and has done that role for the Team.
“Liverpool and Celtic”
L&C were trending on Twitter earlier as the reason why UK football was banned today.
Because their fans would’ve disrupted any minutes silence.
