When newspapers cut their own throat

712

I had very little interest in what former Rangers player Kirk Broadfoot did or said in a match against Wigan recently, I didn’t even know he was still in the game.  What makes him newsworthy (to some) today is a 10 match ban, handed down by The FA in England, for what was reportedly sectarian abuse.

What I found galling is how Mirror Group Newspapers reported this story.  The Mirror wrote:

“Kirk Broadfoot has been handed a staggering 10-game ban for a sectarian tirade against James McClean.

The Rotherham and former Scotland defender will have to serve what is believed to be the longest ban for verbal abuse in English football history.”

Its Scottish sister paper the Daily Record reproduced the same text with one edit:

“Kirk Broadfoot has been handed a staggering 10-game ban for launching a verbal tirade against James McClean.

The former Scotland and Rangers defender will have to serve what is believed to be the longest ban for verbal abuse in English football history.”

The italics are mine.  For reasons which don’t surprise me, the biggest selling Scottish newspaper decided it was unwise to report that a former Rangers player received a huge ban for sectarian abuse.  In 2015.

When Celtic Quick News started 11 years ago a couple of newspapers and radio stations pretty much controlled the news, politics and sports reporting in Scotland.  The journos all worked together; this was a real cabal.  If they wanted to blacken the name of a Fergus McCann, or his like, droves of people quickly turned away from him.

CQN started because reporting like this was rife and unchecked.  I know the value of the new “citizen” media, but I also know its limits.  We need newspapers, we need people to continue to buy them and we need them to find a viable business model.  Without them, reporting which requires considerable resource, experience and, occasionally, money, will not happen.

Most of all, we need them to stop cutting their own throat.

I’m off to Aberdour today, for the 12th CQN Golf Charity Open, not that I’m a golfer, of course.  See you there.

  1. It’s alwaysbetter to tell the truth… I find it incredible that traditional media have not yet grasped this. In a world with ‘citizen journalists’ armed with hand held recording tools it is inevitable that the truth will out. No wonder traditional media has lost the confidence of its customers and is experiencing plummeting distribution figures year on year…

    BOBBY MURDOCH’S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS

    11:18 on 24 July, 2015

    —————————————-

Agree with most of what you say. But the real problems were apparent for many years prior to 2008.

Newspapers cut their own throats in 2 ways:

Arrogantly dismissing the online threat to printed papers (described to me by one daily newspaper editor in 2004 as “a passing fad”).

Then, when it became clear even to them that it wasn’t, they failed utterly to change their publishing to a multi-platform model.

Instead, they set about replacing senior journalists and other “troublemakers” – ie, people who cared about the journalism – with “managers” and placemen, and set about cynically asset-stripping and milking their newspapers for every thin dime they could before their papers died.

I chaired a meeting with a group of daily newspaper editors in the north of England in 2005, giving them a presentation on setting up online sites for their newspapers. Their animosity and arrogance was shocking.

At one point I said: “In five years’ time, we need to be – ” and was interrupted by my own MD who said, to applause: “Listen, xxxx, you need to get on the message. I don’t give a xxxx about what this paper’s doing in 5 years time.”

His game plan was to maximise his bonuses over 2 to 3 years by slashing and burning, then ride off into the sunset.

And that’s what they all did, leaving behind pale shadows of what used to be good, honest, campaigning newspapers.

  3. One thing I can never understand,is why our club allows the DR advertising space throughout

Celtic Park. The revenue stream from this practise surely is not that much in the grand scheme of things.Who is it for.?Active Celtic supporters do not go near this Sevco supporting rag.In the workplace,I see Celtic minded guys reading it,but in the majority of cases they are non season ticket holders.Just wish Celtic would do away with this rag and it’s hurting Hun

    So called journos.

  4. Broadfoot comes from Drongan in Ayrshire, a Hun hell-hole of the basest order.

They’ll erect a statue of him made from the bones of dug-up fenian graves outside the local pit-fighting arena for this one.

  5. As BMCUW pointed out, Broadfoot hails(!) from Drongan in deepest loyalist Ayrshire.

    Nuff said!

    HH!!

  6. Just catching up with my mail, after a time away from home. I received the following from a Douglas Forrester who is part of the Safer Communities Directorate.

‘Thank you for your letter (date) to Paul Wheelhouse MSP, regarding his previous response to you on the Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications (Scotland) Act 2012. Your letter has been forwarded to me to provide a reply as policy lead on this legislation.’

In the third paragraph of the reply Forrester states, ‘ Regarding the policing of football matches, as Mr Wheelhouse previously advised you, the Act makes no provision at all for policing of football matches and this is an operational matter for Police Scotland. If you are concerned about the policing at football matches, you have the right to make a complaint to Police Scotland. This is the first step in the process. Once you have exhausted this step, if you remain unhappy with the outcome of your complaint, you can then take your complaint forward to the Police Investigation and Review Commissioner (PIRC). ….’

Could someone please help me on this one? If the Act makes no provision for policing at football matches, why are the Police acting as if the Act gave special powers to the force to arrest people at, on their way to or even simply approaching a football ground even if the person involved has no intention of attending a football match. Help, please!

  7. When the truth can be blatantly manipulated in Scotland, even although the correct story is published in England, surely to God it MUST register with the misguided among our ‘kind’, what we would be in for in a separate Scotland.

Yes we can be vigilant, yes we can protest, but in my opinion, ‘the die is cast’ – the Scottish media want the supremacist Scottish institution, based at Ibrox, back in their ‘rightful’ place in Scottish society.

We are 17% of the population, is it any wonder that the media chooses to ‘have a go at us’ – commercial considerations alone will dictate what side their are on.

It appears that the ‘gloves are now off’ and the “they have been punished enough” mantra now is the platform for every Sevco story.

  8. From checking Sevco sites. It seems that clubfoot made a comment to james mcclean about a republican army from Ireland

Hence Rotherham trying to keep it quiet

Pop into to there face book site and make comments

Bang on the money there. If the rags had printed the true story up here they would have had their best sales in a while.Hun Media fairly loving the story.Rubberhead now a hero with them.Desperate to know what the cretin said to Mc Clean.

  10. Visited Pompeii yesterday. Some place.

Waiting outside at the tat stalls waiting for our coach, one of the guys asks if I want to buy anything. “just looking” says I.

“Ah, English? Says he. “naw, Scottish” incorrect him. “Glasgow Celtic?”

    I give him the thumbs—up.

“I watch your game last night, four – one, you play nice!”

There you have it, from a Napoli fan.

Still didn’t buy anything, though the naughty calendar appealed to me.

What do you think of Broadfoot’s behaviour and of the cover up by the DR?

  18. From a purely footballing perspective there appears to have been an up side to rampant sectarianism… No way Hunco would have signed Clubfoot if he was a Catholic. It’s makes me wonder how many sub par footballing mediocrities were handed a contract on the basis of a handshake? What part ( however small) this ultimately contributed to their liquidation?

How far up the chain contracts were given on the basis of handshakes?is it still going on?

  24. Allan Saga An Embarrassment For Gers

Dependant on which newspaper or media outlet you decide to read it would appear Scott Allan’s Hibs future may once again be in doubt following two derisory bids from the team formerly known as Glasgow Rangers.

The Govan outfit’s attempt to sign last season’s Championship player of the year reeks of the Rangers of old who conducted their transfer business with fellow Scottish clubs through the media in the hopes of unsettling the player and turning supporters of his current club against them.

Allan himself is a confirmed bluenose but chose to sign a two year deal at Easter Road last season after a trial at Ibrox saw him deemed unworthy of a contract by then boss, Ally McCoist.

Since signing, the 23 year old has rediscovered the form which made him a hot prospect on the domestic market although a move to West Brom was ill advised and the player struggled to make an impact south of the border where loan spells with Portsmouth and Birmingham City were largely uneventful.

Hibs manager Alan Stubbs has stated the playmaker will see out the remainder of his contract with the club and despite media pressure on the behest of the fallen Glasgow giants, the club have remained steadfast thus far in repelling the approaches from a side likely to be the main obstacle in the Easter Road side’s bid for automatic promotion.

Rangers bully boy tactics however appear to show disdain both to Hibernian and the player himself.

Deliberate low balling offers of £175,00 and £250,000, both to be paid on the never never, show just how far the blue half of the Old Firm have fallen.

Promises of millions from South African tax dodger (recurring theme at Ibrox huh?) Dave King have failed to materialise and the Rangers fans who’ve bought season tickets, some 30,000 according to TRFC, must be wondering where their money has gone.

They’ve released the majority of last season’s expensive flops and replaced them with freebies and a Wigan (relegated from the Championship) bag of lucky dips.

A Hibs view of the Allan saga.

Continuing the theme about the SMSM,someone is telling bare faced lies on this subject. The usual subjects,DR,and STV reporting the player has requested a transfer.

Rubbish say Hibs, and the Edinburgh media.Surely Hibs are entitled to take some action against these two,if what Hibs says is true?..It would be blatant lies made up to pressurize Hibs.

I also notice the “Tick”being kept as low key as possible. If I were Hibs I would issue a statement saying they do not trust Sevco to pay them the balance due,as their credit reference is zero.Shame them. This is the problem. They get away with it.Everyone tip-toeing around them.

What do you think of Broadfoot’s behaviour and of the cover up by the DR?

    ———————————————————————————————————————-

I don`t live in U.K.,so my familiarity with the issue is determined mainly by what I read on C.Q.N.

Wouldn`t want to be begging the question (cover up ) and don`t know the specifics, however the ingrained bias of the Scottish newspaper fraternity and,I`m told, the B.B.C. and the fact that he was given a 10 game suspension suggest that he had a case to answer.

If he appeals,we will probably be in a better position to judge.

If he doesn`t,then he`s probably guilty as charged,m`lud and reluctant to have the details of the case given the oxygen of publicity.

    We shall see.
