When newspapers cut their own throat

712

I had very little interest in what former Rangers player Kirk Broadfoot did or said in a match against Wigan recently, I didn’t even know he was still in the game.  What makes him newsworthy (to some) today is a 10 match ban, handed down by The FA in England, for what was reportedly sectarian abuse.

What I found galling is how Mirror Group Newspapers reported this story.  The Mirror wrote:

“Kirk Broadfoot has been handed a staggering 10-game ban for a sectarian tirade against James McClean.

The Rotherham and former Scotland defender will have to serve what is believed to be the longest ban for verbal abuse in English football history.”

Its Scottish sister paper the Daily Record reproduced the same text with one edit:

“Kirk Broadfoot has been handed a staggering 10-game ban for launching a verbal tirade against James McClean.

The former Scotland and Rangers defender will have to serve what is believed to be the longest ban for verbal abuse in English football history.”

The italics are mine.  For reasons which don’t surprise me, the biggest selling Scottish newspaper decided it was unwise to report that a former Rangers player received a huge ban for sectarian abuse.  In 2015.

When Celtic Quick News started 11 years ago a couple of newspapers and radio stations pretty much controlled the news, politics and sports reporting in Scotland.  The journos all worked together; this was a real cabal.  If they wanted to blacken the name of a Fergus McCann, or his like, droves of people quickly turned away from him.

CQN started because reporting like this was rife and unchecked.  I know the value of the new “citizen” media, but I also know its limits.  We need newspapers, we need people to continue to buy them and we need them to find a viable business model.  Without them, reporting which requires considerable resource, experience and, occasionally, money, will not happen.

Most of all, we need them to stop cutting their own throat.

I’m off to Aberdour today, for the 12th CQN Golf Charity Open, not that I’m a golfer, of course.  See you there.

  4. Official Statement from the FA.

Following an Independent Regulatory Commission hearing, Rotherham United’s Kirk Broadfoot will serve an immediate 10-match suspension after a misconduct charge against him was found proven.

The charge was that during a league fixture between Rotherham and Wigan Athletic on March 14 2015 Broadfoot used abusive and/or insulting words towards a member of the opposition, in breach of FA Rule E3(1).

It was further alleged that the breach was an “Aggravated Breach” as defined by Rule E3(2).

Broadfoot was also fined £7,500 and ordered to complete an education programme.

  5. Agendas, agendas, agendas

    They are everywhere.

Paul is correct to point out the editing carried out by the Daily Record and indeed the press cabal that operates within Scotland. Why do the press do this in Scotland?

Because it has a racist agenda – an anti irish anti catholic agenda.

Does the press stand alone in Scotland with this agenda? Of course not – that would be bizarre. The media is merely the reflection on wider scottish society. Scottish society is institutionally racist and is practicing that racism very actively. Whether it is, ahem, losing police records, covering it up with official enquiries or passing racist laws its very active and its at the heart of the SNP.

    But agenda are indeed everywhere.

CQN has a very specific agenda and its showing again today.

The media in Scotland did indeed have an agenda against Fergus. He was after all the man who saved celtic. Irish catholic celtic – the enemy in scotland. However to suggest that is why the celtic support did turn against Fergus is disengenous. Fergus was simply protecting his investment in his last year and held back nominal investment in the club. We suffered as a result. Never forget it was the support that backed McCann that made McCann successful. It was the support who ultimately saved Celtic. Fergus didnt care about that support in that final year. He couldnt care less that Celtic went backwards – just so long as he got his return.

Thats why the support turned on him that last year and no amount of reinvention of history will change it. Its insulting to the Celtic support to claim that they peddle to the racist agenda in scotland. The celtic support have carried the fight against that racism for well over a century. Recently those who run celtic have thrown their hat in with the racism and have contributed to the victimisation of the celtic support.

That is an inconvenient truth for Paul and his CQN agenda.

CQN is here to give the board’s one sided view on events in and around celtic. To persuade you that you arent being ripped off or that the club really do have the best interests of its supporters at hat (despite all the evidence to the contrary).

CQN does not want to discuss lies issued by PL or the Board, or that the club illegally passed your details to the police. Nor does it want to discuss the role celtic played in the 5 way agreement or in attempts to protect rangers.

    Agendas eh?

Whos agenda will you play with?

  6. 21-5-79 @ 12:52,

What he was charged with- General

Cases involving media comments or comments made on social networking sites are charged under FA Rule E3(1). Should the comments include a reference to any one or more of a person or person’s ethnic origin, colour, race, nationality, faith, gender, sexual orientation or disability, these are considered ‘aggravating factors’ and FA Rule E3(2) may apply.

This allows for a Regulatory Commission to consider the imposition of a doubled sanction.

In addition, for cases involving Participants of the FA Premier League, Football League, Football Conference National Division and The FA Woman’s Super League, the timings set out in Schedule C of the Disciplinary Regulations ordinarily apply.

When the truth can be blatantly manipulated in Scotland, even although the correct story is published in England, surely to God it MUST register with the misguided among our ‘kind’, what we would be in for in a separate Scotland.

Yes we can be vigilant, yes we can protest, but in my opinion, ‘the die is cast’ – the Scottish media want the supremacist Scottish institution, based at Ibrox, back in their ‘rightful’ place in Scottish society.

We are 17% of the population, is it any wonder that the media chooses to ‘have a go at us’ – commercial considerations alone will dictate what side their are on.

It appears that the ‘gloves are now off’ and the “they have been punished enough” mantra now is the platform for every Sevco story.

What do you think of Broadfoot’s behaviour and of the cover up by the DR?

    ———————————————————————————————————————-

I don`t live in U.K.,so my familiarity with the issue is determined mainly by what I read on C.Q.N.

Wouldn`t want to be begging the question (cover up ) and don`t know the specifics, however the ingrained bias of the Scottish newspaper fraternity and,I`m told, the B.B.C. and the fact that he was given a 10 game suspension suggest that he had a case to answer.

If he appeals,we will probably be in a better position to judge.

If he doesn`t,then he`s probably guilty as charged,m`lud and reluctant to have the details of the case given the oxygen of publicity.

    We shall see.
