When newspapers cut their own throat

712

I had very little interest in what former Rangers player Kirk Broadfoot did or said in a match against Wigan recently, I didn’t even know he was still in the game.  What makes him newsworthy (to some) today is a 10 match ban, handed down by The FA in England, for what was reportedly sectarian abuse.

What I found galling is how Mirror Group Newspapers reported this story.  The Mirror wrote:

“Kirk Broadfoot has been handed a staggering 10-game ban for a sectarian tirade against James McClean.

The Rotherham and former Scotland defender will have to serve what is believed to be the longest ban for verbal abuse in English football history.”

Its Scottish sister paper the Daily Record reproduced the same text with one edit:

“Kirk Broadfoot has been handed a staggering 10-game ban for launching a verbal tirade against James McClean.

The former Scotland and Rangers defender will have to serve what is believed to be the longest ban for verbal abuse in English football history.”

The italics are mine.  For reasons which don’t surprise me, the biggest selling Scottish newspaper decided it was unwise to report that a former Rangers player received a huge ban for sectarian abuse.  In 2015.

When Celtic Quick News started 11 years ago a couple of newspapers and radio stations pretty much controlled the news, politics and sports reporting in Scotland.  The journos all worked together; this was a real cabal.  If they wanted to blacken the name of a Fergus McCann, or his like, droves of people quickly turned away from him.

CQN started because reporting like this was rife and unchecked.  I know the value of the new “citizen” media, but I also know its limits.  We need newspapers, we need people to continue to buy them and we need them to find a viable business model.  Without them, reporting which requires considerable resource, experience and, occasionally, money, will not happen.

Most of all, we need them to stop cutting their own throat.

I’m off to Aberdour today, for the 12th CQN Golf Charity Open, not that I’m a golfer, of course.  See you there.

  1. Not all bad news…..

A source within Scottish football officialdom said the matter was irrelevant as Broadfoot’s international career had “long since ended”.

Roy Greenslade has commented on this before, even before Thomson got involved for his day in the sun.

just a little teaser for those who follow the gee-gees… next Saturday (1st Aug) will see the start of Celtic’s SPL campaign at home against Ross County AND the start of our CQN Naps competition for 2015-16.

Hopefully our reigning champ, twists n turns, will be around to defend his title.

I will send out further details during this week…

Funny that the OFBA is so broad as to criminalize people (including non-scots) walking to a football game (even if they have no intention of going to the game) in Scotland, or even a game abroad involving a scottish team, but t it doesn’t cover scottish players (including those who have played for the Scottish National team) who make sectararian comments (as long as he is playing for an english team in England)….

If I was a bit more cynical, you’d think they almost anticipated this sort of behavior from the sevconians when they drafted the legislation.

There is no room for cynicism in your game, you should know better.

  7. Paul67 Nicholas Johnson explains why newspapers are irrelevant

Parenti then goes on to quote Nicholas Johnson, former commissioner of the Federal Communications Commission, who said that there are four stages that journalists typically go through in their career:

‘In the early stage, you’re a young crusader and you write an exposé story about the powers that be, and you bring it to your editor and the editor says: “No, kill it. We can’t touch that. Too hot.”

‘Stage two: You get an idea for the story, but you don’t write it and you check with the editor first and he says: “No, won’t fly. No, I think the old man won’t like it. Don’t do that, he has a lot of friends in there and that might get messy.”

‘Stage three: You get an idea for the story and you yourself dismiss it as silly.

‘Stage four: You no longer get the idea for that kind of an exposé story.

‘And I would add a stage five: You then appear on panels, with media critics like me, and you get very angry and indignant when we say that there are biases in the media and you’re not as free and independent as you think.’

Perhaps when the BBC’s John Simpson finally retires, or Channel 4’s Jon Snow, or ITV’s Mark Austin, or any of the other big beasts in the media jungle, they’ll be brave and honest enough to make similar cogent observations about journalism.

  8. So the sectarian/racist/foul mouthed idiot (now deified by sevconians, obvs) is to attend an ‘Education programme’?

Think it might be a bit too late for that buffoon.

Wee point Mike, you can’t be charged under OBaF Act when supporting your team outside of Scotland.

    Right, things to do.

  12. chairbhoy @ 10.46

    I agree…

“Earlier this week, Rotherham and the FA refused to comment on the matter because of a strict confidentiality agreement that prohibits anyone connected to the case with making any comment about it.”

Apparently the FA gagged everyone because they feared that there would be reprisals.

“It is believed that was put in place over fears of a risk to the parties involved if details were revealed. ”

So apart from anyone who was at the game, or at the hearing, or in the FA office or in the Rotherham and Wigan offices …it’s a secret.

One way not to eliminate this vile stuff is to tell no one that you’ve disciplined someone for doing it.

As for the papers, The Mirror may well be more accurate in describing the words as sectarian….but their verbiage includes these ‘contextual’ nuggets..

“Broadfoot was born into a Protestant family in Ayrshire and is known to be a staunch supporters of certain cultural traditions relating to his religion.”

My my my, now it’s a religion with certain cultural traditions…and then this..

“McClean, a Catholic who signed for West Brom this summer, has been in the news over his refusal to wear a shirt with a poppy symbol in it, turning his back on the Union Flag prior to a game and refusing to sing the British national anthem before kick-off at a game for his new club during their pre-season tour in America.”

This is the English papers variant on the “they’re all as bad as one another” stereotype, combined with a whisper to their readers that McClean, in particular, is just asking for it, and is not one of them.

The gag by the FA was poor judgement, cowardly and lacks leadership, and the whole issue was always going to come out.

A 10 game ban – the longest ever in the game in England – but we’ll keep the real reasons a secret…just in case those who support sectarianism want revenge.

Good Grief…that’ll surely eradicate the scourge of sectarianism.

BMCUWP …. I LOVE a good donut …and canada is the donut capital of the world …. along with our other great culinary contributions…. butter tarts and poutine!

and, I am told that there is nothing quite like the holy trinity ….donut, coffee and a cigarette… except I have never had a cigarette (dad gave me a puff of one when I was five, I threw up, and that was the end of my smoking career!)

and I dont drink coffee (except when I was on hoiday in Italy …. ..and they scarred me for life … I would order a cappucino or cafe latte… and say mille grazie when they handed it to me… and the servers often would ‘prego finocchio’ …

this threw me, as I checked my Italian/Canadian dictionary, and learned that ‘finocchio’ meant fennel …..didn’t understand

so, when I got home for the trip, I asked my Italian pal why they say ‘finocchio’…. he got all upset, and explained that it is a not so nice slang term for homosexual, and demanded to know who called me that…. I told him every server in Italy said it when I ordered my cappucino or cafe latte … he laughed and explained to me that, in Italy, men drink espresso (double), and sometimes cappucino (but that is usually for ladies) … and real men never order cafe latte ….

so, ever since, I have been afraid to go into a donut store and order a coffee with my donut!

hamiltontim … I could be mistaken (often am), as I haven’t looked at this in some time, but I thought Scotland could assume jurisdiciton under this act, even if the game were played in a foreign country, as long as it was a scottish team involved (either the national team, or a scottish team playing in Europe).

But, I am sure that you and others who are there know this stuff better than I, so I think I will follow DBBIA’s suggestions, and stand at the border and say what I want! :)
