When newspapers cut their own throat

712

I had very little interest in what former Rangers player Kirk Broadfoot did or said in a match against Wigan recently, I didn’t even know he was still in the game.  What makes him newsworthy (to some) today is a 10 match ban, handed down by The FA in England, for what was reportedly sectarian abuse.

What I found galling is how Mirror Group Newspapers reported this story.  The Mirror wrote:

“Kirk Broadfoot has been handed a staggering 10-game ban for a sectarian tirade against James McClean.

The Rotherham and former Scotland defender will have to serve what is believed to be the longest ban for verbal abuse in English football history.”

Its Scottish sister paper the Daily Record reproduced the same text with one edit:

“Kirk Broadfoot has been handed a staggering 10-game ban for launching a verbal tirade against James McClean.

The former Scotland and Rangers defender will have to serve what is believed to be the longest ban for verbal abuse in English football history.”

The italics are mine.  For reasons which don’t surprise me, the biggest selling Scottish newspaper decided it was unwise to report that a former Rangers player received a huge ban for sectarian abuse.  In 2015.

When Celtic Quick News started 11 years ago a couple of newspapers and radio stations pretty much controlled the news, politics and sports reporting in Scotland.  The journos all worked together; this was a real cabal.  If they wanted to blacken the name of a Fergus McCann, or his like, droves of people quickly turned away from him.

CQN started because reporting like this was rife and unchecked.  I know the value of the new “citizen” media, but I also know its limits.  We need newspapers, we need people to continue to buy them and we need them to find a viable business model.  Without them, reporting which requires considerable resource, experience and, occasionally, money, will not happen.

Most of all, we need them to stop cutting their own throat.

I’m off to Aberdour today, for the 12th CQN Golf Charity Open, not that I’m a golfer, of course.  See you there.

Yes, spot on, guess we’ll never know what was said in the staunch, Protestant, cultural tirade.

Don’t remember any East London kultcha being blamed for the England Captains racism.

  2. The glorious balance sheet. Police Scotland are indeed out of control. What’s more so are the SNP government.

This is the response both gave as statements to the European court of human rights ruling on their stop and search tactics

“Whilst in not wishing to pre-empt the outcome of that review, we believe that the only acceptable way forward is to ensure all stop-and-search would require to be on done a statutory footing.”

Police Scotland Assistant Chief Constable Wayne Mawson said: “Police Scotland recognises it is important to strike a balance between protecting the public and the rights of the individual and we are committed to complying with requirements of the Human Rights Act and our Code of Ethics and Police Values, where stop-and-search must be carried out with integrity, fairness and respect.

“We remain committed to driving forward with our ongoing improvements which will consider and act upon all recommendations from the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Scottish Government independent advisory group on stop-and-search which is also considering the future of consensual searching.”

A Scottish Government spokeswoman said: “Stop-and-search can be a valuable tool in combating crime and has led to the seizures of dangerous weapons, drugs and stolen goods. However, clearly it is important to get the balance right between protecting the public and the rights of the individual.”

Everyday language in Scotland is now being manipulated. Police Scotland will consider what the European court of human rights said. Wow that’s big of them. It’s also clear that the SNP and police Scotland, instead of realising that they have gone over the top here are deciding that they will make stop and search legal rather than consensual. In other words the snps are about to give police Scotland the legal power to search anyone they like.

This is really becoming very concerning. And with no credible opposition to the SNP government they are not being held to account.

  5. The Petrofac Cup just a pre season game? Surely the faithful will be up in arms about this statement denigrating the magnificent trophy that has so far eluded their mighty club in its first three years.

There must be doubts now that it will be fourth time lucky in the quest for a first ever cup.

bsr …. a serious question…. okay, well, sort of serious question….

while Ms. Hendricks is unquestionably a fetching young lady, and has some unquestionably lovely qualities, I fail to see what makes her so much lovelier than, for example, Kate Becnkinsale, or, just because I am patriotic, Pamela Anderson … can you elucidate?

  14. Not sure what the Scott Allan fuss is about…. He’s a 5 aside player. Watched him against them last season on couple of occasions… Poses a lot on the ball without any real threat.

Maybe a bit harsh on him, but he’s a 750k / 1million pound player, that wouldn’t get a start in our team ahead of, GMS, Armstrong, Johansen, Forrest, Commons etc.

On a different subject, my concern about the Quarabag tie, isn’t the opponents. It isn’t the travel… It isn’t the heat, or the Brazilians (lol) …

    VanDijk is the biggest concern.

If there are any remote doubts about his application in training, or entering into these matches, then I’d go with Boyata and Mulgrew….

Van Dijk on Wednesday night was 10 yards off his opponent whenever the ball was played towards the centre forward… We will get punished if the big man isn’t playing at full tilt.

  15. Ah the irony of Scottish news.

Scottish ministers are worried that MI5 may be spying on them. A sudden concern for civil liberties eh. Only when it effects the SNP as they should be allowed to do what they like.

The a wee story coming up about the Clutha reopening and guess who is there. Wee Nicola. Didn’t Jim Murphy get all sorts of abuse for daring to help out at the Clutha when the tragedy happenned? Wasn’t he accused of somehow manufacturing the incident for publicity?

Irony, agendas, government Orwellian approaches etc.

    Just another day in Scotland.

  20. Most important lesson of today has been outlined by Nil by Mouth.

“The anti-sectarianism campaign group Nil By Mouth welcomed the severity of the punishment, and highlighted what it perceived to be the different attitudes shown towards sectarianism by the English and Scottish football authorities.[57]”

  21. The glorious balance sheet

That is just an incredible story on every level.

  22. NegAnon2,

I too was a wee bit bemused that Nicola Sturgeon was there (and speechmaking too) and Jim Murphy wasn’t.

I also saw the irony of her and her party being up in arms that they might be being spied upon (which they have every right to be angry about, of course), while allowing their police force to ride rough shod over the rights of their fellow country men and women.

  23. IniquitousIV on

It appears that Ronny is taking Qarabag seriously. It is interesting to note that Scotland and Azerbaijan started with 4 and 3 teams respectively in the Champions League and Europa Cups. We have 2 left, whereas their 3 are still alive. Of course, the calibre of opposition is a matter of luck at the very early stages, but the teams from the former Soviet Central Asian Republics continue to pick up co-efficient points.

I’m glad the first leg is at home. When we played Karagandy away, we couldn’t make our minds up whether we were there to defend and keep it tight, or attack and steal an away goal. Also agree with Ruggyman that our central defence has to be totally focused on preventing an away goal tomorrow night.

  24. Away goals will not be a problem tomorrow night.

They will be on Wednesday night ‘tho.
