When the Champions League shop window is a bit too clear

586

We’re getting to that time of the transfer window when clubs with money and who are either underperforming, or who have silverware in sight, often make desperate decisions.

It is a remarkable statement of the times that three Celtic first team players have attracted interest from English Premier League clubs, at valuations that a year ago would appear eye-watering. It’s just as remarkable that we’ve not locked the suitors in a room until they emptied their wallets.

Seven months into the season, five credible Champions League performances and 27 peerless games in domestic football and our 34-year-old goalkeeper attracts a higher bid than would be achievable by any player at a Scottish club other than Celtic.

Not that I’m agreeing with all this ‘What we have we hold’ business. Every playing asset has a price, to borrow a regular CQN phrase from 2005.

I hear Peter Lawwell was spotted earlier buying tickets for tonight’s showing of T2 Trainspotting for himself, Brendan, Craig, Erik and Moussa. “Unreal” wage offers can turn a player’s head.  Better get them to the movies with their phones switched off.

Had a decent memory myself once but alas I need to look up more and more. Not to any dementia level, but my mother is struggling with it.

The Tom Campbell book I’ve got is The Glory And The Dream, which he co – wrote with Pat Woods and goes to 1984. Also all the original Lions “biographies” along with a small assortment of other books, mostly Celtic related. And about 3,000 match programmes collected over the years.

Nostalgia is what it used to be as far as I’m concerned.

On the subject of which, there’s a book available on Amazon by Bill Heaney called All Our Yesterday’s: A Look Back At Life In The Lennox. I haven’t got it yet, waiting for my dad to finish his paperback copy, but it’s got good pictures in it!

I don’t believe the issue in this window has been money; I think it’s the same old, same old: it’s difficult to get cubs to sell their best players half-way through a season.

The litmus test will be come June when Brendan Rodgers give his list of targets to the Board and tries to get the deals done quickly!

The interesting thing about Selling Dembele at that kind of money is how it effects tax.

Celtic have historically paid no corporation tax but as BlantyreKev explained a few weeks ago we are getting to the stage where Celtic MUST spend money on assets like players OR hand money to the tax man.

None of that will be lost on the board or management.

It doesn’t mean spending unwisely but it takes you to a whole new level. It doesn’t mean having a go at bringing in some new players it means you must bring in players of the right quality and at the right price or pay the tax man.

Bean Counters don’t like unnecessarily paying the tax man. EVER.

People who demand signings have short memory. People forget how productive the summer window was with several ins and outs and the team ultimately improved.

We’ve strengthened in CM which was exactly what we needed. What I would have also have liked is some deadwood being moved on and a winger to take Paddy’s place next year.

That said, there is always the chance that Paddy will return fulltime and there is still a chance for some ins and outs

  5. Has Henry the Nigerian wonderkid been spotted at Ross Hall yet?

Maybe he’s heading up the road with Moussa after spending the day in London having his knees checked!

Talking of knees I would like to wish my daughter Erica a full and speedy recovery after her knee operation at Crosshoose hospital today.

A player, who is not getting a game for Watford’s first team has gone to China for £20Million!!!

God alone knows where we will be by the summer!

  7. I believe we have a very good squad and I enjoy seeing players prove me wrong if I had initially not rated them.

Currently, I am enjoying seeing Gamboa and Boyata playing much better than I thought they could and I enjoy my growing confidence watching a player I already rated, Callum McGregor.

With all that in mind, I am happy with what we have and wonder where people think we need strengthening .

NB I don`t mean for the squad; I mean in whatever is our strongest team.

  8. Thanks guys.

I read BK’s post a couple of weeks ago and thought it interesting.

That being the case what were the PLC thinking buying a £40m player for £0.5m? Unbelievable!!!

    :@-)))

It’s not where I or you think we need strengthening, it’s were Brendan feels we need to strengthen that matters. Going on his comments from live interviews and his want to bring in 2 or 3 players he feels would strengthen the team within his plans and vision of how he wants to play that matters. He must be given that full support within the constraints he is well aware he had to work to.

His comment after game on Sunday allude, if not wholly to, but a little to his disappointment in clubs efforts.

    ============

Couldn’t we just structure the payments so they are not in this tax year? Or build an enormous cafe? I’m happy with either

  12. Building a fans’ cafe beside the superstore would be better than paying corporation tax.

    Just saying like.

    Changed days indeed.

It was not so long ago we would all be f5’n on deadline day waiting to see who if anyone was coming in, now we are sitting here hopefull that no one from our first team goes.
