When the Champions League shop window is a bit too clear

586

We’re getting to that time of the transfer window when clubs with money and who are either underperforming, or who have silverware in sight, often make desperate decisions.

It is a remarkable statement of the times that three Celtic first team players have attracted interest from English Premier League clubs, at valuations that a year ago would appear eye-watering. It’s just as remarkable that we’ve not locked the suitors in a room until they emptied their wallets.

Seven months into the season, five credible Champions League performances and 27 peerless games in domestic football and our 34-year-old goalkeeper attracts a higher bid than would be achievable by any player at a Scottish club other than Celtic.

Not that I’m agreeing with all this ‘What we have we hold’ business. Every playing asset has a price, to borrow a regular CQN phrase from 2005.

I hear Peter Lawwell was spotted earlier buying tickets for tonight’s showing of T2 Trainspotting for himself, Brendan, Craig, Erik and Moussa. “Unreal” wage offers can turn a player’s head.  Better get them to the movies with their phones switched off.

  1. Players have to impress in the the big European games in order to attract the attention of the big clubs and the type of ridiculous money they can spend. Players like Wanyama, Forster and now Dembele have all done it. We did well with Virgil who did not really impress in Europe. It’s catch 22 you have to hold onto your best players in order to qualify for the group stage and further. Teams like Porto and Sporting Lisbon can sell their best players for enormous money and still make the knockout stages of European competitions on a regular basis by dipping into the fruitful South American market. Celtic cannot get access to that market.

We’re doing our best to do what they do well while avoiding doing what they do badly (getting into huge amounts of debt)

On the subject of which, there’s a book available on Amazon by Bill Heaney called All Our Yesterday’s: A Look Back At Life In The Lennox. I haven’t got it yet, waiting for my dad to finish his paperback copy, but it’s got good pictures in it!

*I know about this one, Billy was a neighbour of Mrs. TT up Castlehill when growing up.

He also wrote a book about Connemara, my paternal granny came fae the Clifden area as did the maternal side of Mrs. TT, same surname as well, see us ben afflecks and inbreeding )))

There’s another book out there called a Dumbarton Childhood which she got fae Amazon. She wisnae too pleased with it nor were her siblings, the author does a bit of spoofing. His da was her mother’s uncle, same age though, and he does a number on St Pats, Clerkhill and the clergy, seems tae live on a parallel universe.

  4. Celtic40me……………….Agreed, my knowledge of the financial circumstances of either Sporting Lisbon or Porto are nil but they always seem to get it right.

Even better than the Bruce Forsyth post and they do say that there is a modicum of truth in every good joke. That’s why that one is a stonker.

  6. There’s only One thing worse than having the UK’s ( and beyond) footballing world discussing Celtic players.

And of course, that is not discussing our players at all.

  9. Close the window now, there will be no more dealings, Paul said as much in his leader.

Am very happy, we have come out stronger than we went in, can’t ask for more than that, and we have Brendan

  10. Thanks to all of the CQNers for the prayers, thoughts and candles for my Uncle Rod Docherty, a lifetime supporter and Season Book Holder.

Rod passed away peacefully in St Margaret’s Hospice, Clydebank this afternoon. Rod’s life was about the game on a Saturday, Mass at 9am every Sunday and a weekly trip to St Peter’s Cemetery, Dalbeth to visit his wife and my parents.

Wi-Fi never made it into his home but he enjoyed the stories about the characters on here.

He’ll be sadly missed and fought a brave fight and he enjoyed watching the recent Albion Rovers game in St Margaret’s.

Many thanks to Sister Rita and all the staff at St Margaret’s for their professionalism and spiritual care over the last fortnight.

Hail Hail Rod for a life very well lived.

  11. IMy friends in Celtic,

If we have the will and the financial clout to hold on to our most prized possessions then that can only be a psychological boost to our footballing aspirations .

However the bottom line is that it is a mega boost to all of us who enjoy watching the hoops.

Winning, entertaining and providing enjoyment the Glasgow Celtic way.

    What’s not to like.

  14. Huge credit to Moussa for his commitment, many a player would’ve had his head turned. It’s testament to his respect for his Manager, team mates and the supporters. Not long ago I’m sure the PLC Board would have punted Moussa for that kind of money without a second thought. So it’s credit all round. Great days at Celtic Park.
