When the Champions League shop window is a bit too clear

586

We’re getting to that time of the transfer window when clubs with money and who are either underperforming, or who have silverware in sight, often make desperate decisions.

It is a remarkable statement of the times that three Celtic first team players have attracted interest from English Premier League clubs, at valuations that a year ago would appear eye-watering. It’s just as remarkable that we’ve not locked the suitors in a room until they emptied their wallets.

Seven months into the season, five credible Champions League performances and 27 peerless games in domestic football and our 34-year-old goalkeeper attracts a higher bid than would be achievable by any player at a Scottish club other than Celtic.

Not that I’m agreeing with all this ‘What we have we hold’ business. Every playing asset has a price, to borrow a regular CQN phrase from 2005.

I hear Peter Lawwell was spotted earlier buying tickets for tonight’s showing of T2 Trainspotting for himself, Brendan, Craig, Erik and Moussa. “Unreal” wage offers can turn a player’s head.  Better get them to the movies with their phones switched off.

  1. Does anyone know if a transfer can completed subject to a medical? Is that acceptable for this window?

Second question, ditto for a work permit? Ebouie’s transfer was subject to a wp, but that was obtained within the window. Can we register a transfer subject to wp to be obtained after the window closes?

    Rebus……clutching at straws.

First CL qualifier is11/12 July. Summer transfer window officially open 1 July

  3. i actually hate the transfer window structure.

its against free trade, i miss the days of waking up to a new signing on the back pages as a suprise , mcgarvey one a wee favorite.

Obviously BR wants Moussa available for the Champions League Qualifiers..who wouldnt …he might be the difference between qualifying or not.

This time next year maybe Peter might get his bonus…that said this isnt the time to be slagging off Pistol Pete, give credit where its due..If he has turned down an offer or allowed the football manager to make the decision I say WELL DONE PEDRO

  5. Thanks Lennybhoy. I agree disappointing as I think we could jump start things for the qualifiers but

    in BR we trust!!

  6. The best thing Celtic have done this Window , is throw the £40 mil in to the mix for the summer

I’d take it, despite a couple of good performances lately he offers very little and slows us down. We have Brown, Armstrong, Eboue, McGregor and Henderson for the 2 holding positions

  9. G67- we could get at least £5 m for Bitton in that league, Johansen is a stand out in it.HH

    Happy for Efe.

    And Celtic.

If he was half decent yes but he’s not. Johansen is much more suited to Championship than Bitton and he went for £2m.

    Cheers for that

Would have liked to see another player in but mainly ambrose commons cifcti moved on .. permanently if possible .

But I suppose we should be more than thankful the board haven’t decided to cash in .

Jozo, Dedryk, Kolo, Mikel and O’Connell all ahead of Efe in the queue of cents halves.

Can’t wait to see him link up with Muldini in the centre of Blackburn defence. If Blackburn aren’t in trouble already they soon will be. ;-)

Hope the big man has every success. Never saw him give less than 100% for us.

Liverpool keeper, what was he thinking about?

    Dear gawd!!!

Deserves a swift boot in the Jimmy Bones :-)

  15. G67- Johansen had much less on his contract than Bitton.Look at the no marks moving today for more than £1.8 mil in that league.Bitton has plenty more European and international experience than any of them.

  16. So all those dire predictions about how Peter the Wolf was on the hunt for his latest financial killing at the teams expense , and manager, didn’t come to pass in the end. Hey how there is always the summer.

Best of luck to Efe hope the Blackburn fans are not as easily influenced as some in Glasgow were by the papers.

Reduces wage bill by a little, frees up some space on the training field at Lennoxtown, Efe stays in the UK and qualifies for his citizenship, puts himself in the shop window for a summer deal either at Blackburn or elsewhere

May your Uncle Rod rest in peace, a proper Celtic man gone to glory.

Wish big Efe success wherever he goes!

Love the guy, 100% attitude and never complained, never hid, as a man absolute class above!

Remember his first game in central mid, when he looked the real deal.

Never really played in a position that suited his skills, and will benefit from strong coaching ( maybe too far gone at Celts with press down on him (also lost a section of the CP Crowd …)

Fresh start for him and hope he can make the most of it!

    Thanks Efe!

On the subject of which, there’s a book available on Amazon by Bill Heaney called All Our Yesterday’s: A Look Back At Life In The Lennox. I haven’t got it yet, waiting for my dad to finish his paperback copy, but it’s got good pictures in it!

*I know about this one, Billy was a neighbour of Mrs. TT up Castlehill when growing up.

He also wrote a book about Connemara, my paternal granny came fae the Clifden area as did the maternal side of Mrs. TT, same surname as well, see us ben afflecks and inbreeding )))

    ========================================================================

    May be of interest.

Spent a Summer in Clifden , or rather Ballyconneely ,which is the home of one of Billy Connolly`s ancestors.

I was struck by the similarity between the surname and the town .

    Surely no coincidence.

*me tae although I did welcome it when bader was throwing money about like a man with nae erms, pun not intended.

I suppose my favourite is watching Scotsport one winters night, deidco had got a credible 0-0 draw away in Dortmund after winning the 1st leg 2-1 to advance to the quarter finals.

The headlines that night were not this game but Big Jock stealing their next anticipated signing Willie Wallace.
