When the rebels manned the barricades

605

Back in 1994, when our day of greatest need arrived, Celtic fans had already invested years in developing a recovery strategy in case the club faced extinction.  A disparate group of “rebels” filtered out good ideas from bad, established a platform for recovery and ensured that when the hour came, one man was ready and able to walk into a branch of Bank of Scotland and deposit a large sum of money into Celtic’s account, while others rallied support and prepared for the recovery.

Those rebels eventually went their own ways as many of those who stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Fergus McCann found allies in conflict didn’t make for friends in peacetime, but the rebels were united long enough to Save our Celts.  Without their preparation, Celtic would have quickly gone into administration and who knows where thereafter.

Compare and contrast with Rangers in their hour of need.  There is no preparation, no consensus of the willing, not even an acceptance that this is, in fact, an hour of need.

    BBC to this point maintaining a “dignified” silence.

    What plans have the Celtic board, or Celtic fans, got in place to fight a newco huns being admitted straight into the SPL?

    That’s the question you should be asking

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    I’ll ask another question.
    Is there ANYONE on this site would have them back as a newco in the SPL?
    If we treat this as a straw-poll,and I’d be surprised to see ANY posts in support,then I think the board should consider the strength of opinion from their fanbase customers.
  5. Tim Malone Will Tell on
    Paul,
    I reckon that if Celtic want to avoid a ‘Newco’ parachute drop into the SPL, then the SPL teams need to be offered some kind of ‘New Deal’ to win their hearts and minds. In the end, they will vote with their wallets.
    The ‘arms race’ between us and them is over – and we won. But now we need to manage the peace process.
    I would suggest that we go back to the days of away sides getting a proportion of gate money – this would offer a finacial inducment plus start to redress the ridiculous financial imbalance that is killing Scottish football. Dermot Desmond might not like it – but he doesnt own Celtic does he?
  6. Paul or anyone,
    Do we know if the trialists travelled back up the road last night with the rest of the squad after the Fleetwood game?
    Just wondered if they are at Lennoxtown and we are waiting to make an announcement at the “optimum moment”! ;o)
    The examples you cite were footballing decisions which, although tied to, are not actually business and financial decisions.
    The business and financial decisions of our club are long term strategic ones. Part of this, back then, was to allow x spend based on y income. This occurred. To deviate from such a plan, means that subsequent years are ‘dipped into’. To continue to deviate from strategic planning to the detriment of future earnings is corporate suicide.
    That the footballing side was not successful on these decisions does not necessarily make them poor ones. On the contrary, they were, and still are, economically sound.
    On the other hand, the business and financial decisions of others are hopefully about to bear the fruit they deserve.
    Ultimately, any deviation on our part from our strategic goals and planning would have been done on the basis of ‘potential earnings’ only – there were no guarantees. This, on the face of it, would have been similar to Craig Whyte’s plan at the start of this season – spend a few million in order to beat some small teams and get into the Champions League group stages.
    What our board done was the correct and steady decision, not particularly brilliant, but the correct decision nonetheless.
  9. At the time of the Whyte takeover the following statement was made. I now seriously doubt the integrity of this statement and wondered if there was any photographic evidence, or video footage that it is in fact true? Perhaps Phil or Paul 67 could do some research and find out if it is fact or fiction?
    I suspect it is simply another case of the press believing everything that is fed to them. I think we deserve answers
    Thoughts?
    Oh – sorry – the statement?
    Yes – it read;
    *The ‘acquisition’ from Sir David Murray (Murray MHL Limited) was made on 6 May 2011 for £1, which was satisfied in full in cash.
  10. Our friends and alter egos over at RTC reckon these are the opening exchanges in Dave King and Paul Murrays takeover attempt and the DR are nailing their colours to the King/Murray mast. Fine by me. The way things are going today they’ll be welcome to collect what they can out of RFC from the skip on Edmiston Drive.
    With regards to the Sky money ( £80m over 5 years ). If this was to happen in any other industry, where, for talking sake you had 12 sister companies ( part of a large group ) that were reliant on large investment over a period of 5 years and one of the companies was to go bust or lose so much money that it might be detrimental to the investment being fulfilled and the other 11 sister companies losing their entitlement of the investment, surely the government ( in our case, Alex Salmond ) would step in and try and salvage the investment for the good of the remaining 11 companies.
    No way should we offer up part of the homegate, but we should offer to renegotiate the percentage we get from the TV deal. Say take less from the domestic tv channels and also offer to buy the rights to SPL games abroad.
  16. Shieldmuir Celtic on
    I was apalled to hear Graham Speirs say on Clyde last night that he believed that the Scottish Parliament would not let Rangers go to the wall -or words to that effect. God help us if we have a Parliament which supports tax-dodgers and fraudsters rather than justice and fairness. I hope not. We might have a fight on our hands to ensure that justice and fairness wins . For this ,as Paul says , we will need SOLIDARITY, and , for a start, we can do without the ridiculous demonising of Peter Lawwell which we sometimes read on here.
  19. Sky Sports News has its own lapdogs trying desperatly to spin ranglers stories .
    At this moment they are still going on about them being after Holt .
    Jim White , Tanner and others spin the scottish football news to a UK (and further) audience.
    Our enemies are everywhere.
  20. If, and it is an if, a newco rangers were to be admitted straight into the spl. They couldnt just wipe away all the debt. If they play at Ibrox, etc etc all the same. So either they continue on, with no money, or they get a new name, etc but probably still have no money to compete with us, to keep it a 2 horse race. Then just how many fans are actually going to travel to Aberdeen, Dundee, Inverness even, to watch them finish 4th, or struggle to get into the top 6?
    Not that many I would suggest. So perhaps it is in Utd’s and Motherwell etc interest to battle out for 2nd and 3rd, with euro involvement and higher home crowds, and probably higher crowds each game, than the now and again ‘bumper’ pay days. Infact, if we got more teams in, and played only twice……
    Also, whatever team does ‘rise from the ashes’. It would still have a decent following in division 3. Enough to help out all those teams.
    So for me, the best outcome for Scottish football, forgetting even the very important integrity of following the rules argument, would be for a newco not to be admitted straight into the spl.
    Lots of things poinnt to Whyte being used as a scapegoat and figure of ridicule-a kind of panto villain.Something just doesn’t add up,and when i get this feeling it is nearly always justified..
    The only part of this cloak and dagger operation i can’t get my head around is someone Brazen/Foolish/Reckless enough to take the lifetime of flak that will follow them around.Unless you have enough money to buy a small island and private security firm and basically live the rest of your life in isolation.
