When the rebels manned the barricades

605

Back in 1994, when our day of greatest need arrived, Celtic fans had already invested years in developing a recovery strategy in case the club faced extinction.  A disparate group of “rebels” filtered out good ideas from bad, established a platform for recovery and ensured that when the hour came, one man was ready and able to walk into a branch of Bank of Scotland and deposit a large sum of money into Celtic’s account, while others rallied support and prepared for the recovery.

Those rebels eventually went their own ways as many of those who stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Fergus McCann found allies in conflict didn’t make for friends in peacetime, but the rebels were united long enough to Save our Celts.  Without their preparation, Celtic would have quickly gone into administration and who knows where thereafter.

Compare and contrast with Rangers in their hour of need.  There is no preparation, no consensus of the willing, not even an acceptance that this is, in fact, an hour of need.

I believe that once Murray started his reckless spending spree (leading to where the Orcs are today) it ruined not only our national team, but also our national game.

No Rangers means that teams would actually be vying for second place, a shot at the CL. They would have more games = more tickets/merchandise sold, greater exposure, playing against the worlds best teams.

Murray & them ruined our game trying to win the big cup, getting rid of them would make it a more competitive, healthier league.

If the googly eyed one is embroiled in criminal investigations with the tax authorities, does this potentially stop him divesting the assets of Rangers until any case is concluded?

Does HMRC have the ability to trump any secured creditor should recovery against a criminal, as opposed to civil, claim be made?

  5. Anyone in the Manchester area avoid the M60 near Eccles. Lorry has gone over and spilled its load of animal feed. All lanes are blocked.

Surrounding roads ate blocked with knuckledragging Orcs heading for free food.

It sounds like a trap set by Manchester Police to flush out the few hundred Huns still in hiding after UEFA Cup Final. Or even Chelsea fans.

Not trying to be confrontational in any way but I would appreciate your view on the matter. I have suggested a proportional sharing of gate money as an inducement to the other clubs to ensure Newco don’t walk straight in to SPL. Media are all suggesting that they will be voted in. You have stated your opposition to gate sharing.

Do you think Newco are likely to be voted in? Do you see us having to negotiate with other clubs to ensure they are not allowed back in? If so what other inducements can we offer the others? Do you see a bright future for the SPL without Newco? Do you think it will be a competitive league or even less competitive than it is at the moment?

I can’t believe we’re not spending more time discussing the other big story of the day: the shameless hogging of international right backs at Celtic Park.

    The recent Celtic Underground podcast (q.v.) has pointed out that we now have Sweden’s right-back, Wales’ right-back, Korea’s right-back, Mexico’s right-back, plus Scotland’s right-back!

If I’m getting you right. Your scenario would give the SFA the choice of a league without Celtic and no Sky deal … or a league without Rangers and no Sky deal… my thought is that the SFA/SPL or whoever you were offering the deal to in Scotland would pick a league with the establishment team in it. Easy to come out with this is what I would do but if we aint in any league and no-one to play football against… we would go bust??? How ironic would that be… They in their worst nightmare end up playing in a league they will win every year and we go bust? As for “How would UEFA react in that situation?”. How could you possibly know? Are you are suggesting the board should gamble our club on the hope that UEFA would push another league into taking us in?

I don’t have a mate at the record, Everton, HMRC or a sheriff’s officer. I do have a china who was on canteen duty at Murray park when Minty called for lunch with Ally. This is what he heard

Ally: two pakoras, chicken wings, portion of samosas and some popadums wi’ spicy onions. David are you having a starter?

Minty: No, I’ll just have the fish & chips

Ally: what about him? He’s dead busy, his ‘phones always off cos he’s in meetings wi’ people talking about money.

Minty: that’s the point Alistair! He’s borrasic!, potless, I’m still waiting for ma pound!

Ally: naaw, he’s loaded, he’s got so much money that ah have to buy the dinner when we meet cos he’s only got hvnner pound notes!

Anyone in the Manchester area avoid the M60 near Eccles. Lorry has gone over and spilled its load of animal feed. All lanes are blocked.

Surrounding roads ate blocked with knuckledragging Orcs heading for free food.

Don’t really think you are comparing like with like. The sack the board demos were on the back of a number of seasons of decline. A trophy had hardly been threatened in a number of seasons since the centenary season. Apathy had set in, and crowds had significantly declined.

They are on the back of 3 IAR. The average football fan does not care a jot about what happens off the park. If they lose a few more games then you will see demos down ibrox way.

Thats all that matters to the average rangers supporter. Sad really ;-)

  11. ernie lynch, be in no doubt, Rangers have more sympathisers among other clubs in the SPL than we do, so if it was a choice, they would choose Rangers, but they are still not liked. The others will only vote Rangers in if they have no choice due to pressure from Bank of Scotland. Celtic threatening to go out of business would be seen as an empty gesture that would have to be rejected, leaving Celtic asking for their resignation back or out of business. It’s Rangers we should be keen on going out of business, not putting ourselves out.

TheOriginalSadiesBhoy, the league would be poorer and less competitive. We would be comparatively stronger but weaker overall. Deals done with the SPL on future income share is not the key point, it’s who is going to maintain their overdrafts. The Bank of Scotland will either force votes in favour or Rangers will not get the support of the clubs.

Crazy measures against Celtic suggested by some (good grief!) miss the target, we need to ensure other clubs are free from interference. If they are, they will vote Rangers out.

  12. TheOriginalSadiesBhoy on

A newco RFC cannot be allowed back into the SPL under any circumstances other than by promotion through the three lower divisions. However, Celtic cannot resign from the SPL without another League to go to. It would be an insane strategy. We must persuade the requisit number of clubs to vote with us to ensure Newco are excluded. This amy require inducements/concessions from us.

  13. No wonder they could not have audited accounts with a £5 Million VAT bill being investigated…

  14. Grant Holt has just proved himself to be an effective batter-ram centre forward in the EPL(best league in the universe) .

Why would he ever turn his back on that for the SPL and in particular for a dying h** fc?

  15. TheOriginalSadiesBhoy on

    Paul

Thanks for your input. I hadn’t considered the need to maintain our overdraft but I think there will be a lot of infighting between Celtic and remaining clubs. It’s a pity John Reid has gone. He would be experienced in political wheeling and dealing.

  16. Spearman says:

    1. It’s the SPL, nothing to do with the SFA. The SPL comprises the clubs who are members of the SPL. No hierarchy, no timeservers, no backwoodsmen. Businesses for whom it’s all about the money. Their choice would be no Sky deal and a newco huns, or no Sky deal and us. Financially they’d be better off with us. Any other decision and the league would be a joke.

    2. If a newco huns are allowed straight into the SPL, the games a bogey. Celtic have lost. There’s no integrity left. Celtic are dead and are no more than one half of a money making venture called the old firm. And they can stop it if they are determined to. If it happens it’s because the Celtic board want it to happen, whatever their public protestations.

That was almost funny:O) you in the I.T.department today?

  18. The rumbling debate by some over what it would be like without them led me to this conclusion:

Disagree with some, we don’t need them, and never will, any supporter who stays away because there is no huns isn’t really a ‘supporter’ are they.

They were an irrelevance in Scottish football for almost a decade till they bought the title in 1987, there crowds dwindled away to that of Aberdeen today, Dun Utd and Aberdeen were the teams to beat at home and in Europe Utd only being denied a second Euro final by the cheats of Roma and a corrupt referee.

We with pure fight, passion and team full of winners won the title in 88, but from then on they outspent most of Britain for a few years and were out of sight due to overspending, at the time we clung on with support dwindling year by year and fans losing faith as our dirty neighbours disappeared out of sight with Mordor packed to the rafters every week, but realistically no one was getting close to them and with us Aberdeen and Utd starting to follow on the trend of bringing in foreigners the fight against them was more or less pointless, they were operating on a different level and the difference in quality of personnel was staggering.

As the press here in Scotland were in awe of all things Souness/Murray/Smith and the huns were competing at the highest stage in Euro football the harsh reality was that the game in the country had started dying a slow death, shout me down but I blame the huns, pure and simple by the flick of a switch they turned our game on it’s head and they lorded and revelled in every minute of their glory and dominance over us. Us finally restoring some faith back in the support by stopping TIAR only prompted the loathing and greed even more from them and their support by proclaiming Wattie ‘over the hill’ and to follow suit and Timmy by bringing in a foreign coach, and so the extravagant and unwarranted spending started again, the huns were in a bubble, a self righteous one at that, their dominance had been thwarted and they replied with the only weapon they had – money, or was it. Our victory in keeping our league title record alive not only bolstered our support and re filled Celtic Park but it sent a message to a generation of huns who had never known a Celtic who could compete with them, sure they went on and Dick delivered their treble celebrated with in true orange style (Dutch offcourse) and all was sweet over Govan way once more. Murray behind the scenes by now must have seen the start of the cracks and no-one would have stopped for a second (press included) to question the spending and salary’s being dished out, and dished out for one reason to fend us off, and fend us off they did but again it was bad practice as most of the big earners were nearing the end of their careers and were tempted by the big bucks, Murray in the beady of the hun could do no wrong, once again the tenners were being spent against our fivers and he bankrolled more success. There is a pattern emerging.

The huns out bought and outspent us and the rest of Scottish Football for the best part of a decade, without our second coming and share issue we would probably be no more relevant to them now than Utd or Aberdeen. Now that the walls of power have came tumbling down and he who once reigned high is hiding out in a cave the ghosts of the past have came back to haunt them and those who took the lamb and lorded over the supremacy are no where to be seen, the game is a bogey, the truth is now out, the huns are cheats, cheats now and more importantly cheats back then through the years of dominance.

People love to remind us back to the days of the early-mid eighties when we had two almost all Scots sides in Euro Finals, our game was up there with the rest on the big stage and on the International front Scotland were at World Cups in Spain 82 and Mexico 86 all of which was done while Mordor was empty and the huns were an irrelevance. We never needed them then, and we certainly could have been doing without them and Murray from 87 onwards, one day our game in this country might recover, wonder what could have been achieved had the growth and youth not been strangled by clubs having to overspend trying to keep up with the cheating and corrupt huns.

I will not shed a single tear if they go under, on the other hand if they survive or establish a NEWCO it will be interesting to see how they cope on a level playing field, something a generation of them have never experienced.
