When the shine rubs off a club’s brand

267

Those not infected with the football bug often look on in a mixture of dismay and disgust at fans of the game.  This is a benign form of intolerance, usually ill-informed and of no consequence to those of us hooked on the game.

Then you read things that makes you wonder.  Real Madrid are in tonight’s’ Champions League semi-final, having eliminated Paris St Germain in the quarters.  PSG fans were so upset with their one-time idols that game which delivered the 10th league title in the club’s history was scarcely celebrated with a round of applause.

PSG ultras left the game early, not wanting to share the moment with the players, the others left within 10 minutes of full time, not even affording players time to do a circuit of the pitch.  There is being upset and a defeat, and there’s being spoiled.

Football supporting is a contract in delight and despair.  You will see both, if you are very lucky, you will experience trophies in the quantity you and I have enjoyed this past decade or so, but most football fans across the major European leagues will never see their side win a major trophy.  Supporting the game is mostly a harsh condition.

We always knew Celtic could not win everything, although there is a real possibility our Generation of Domination could replicate across many generations.  For me, last season’s losses make the prospect of this season’s success all the sweeter.  Would I celebrate 11-in-a-row as much as a mere one-in-a-row?  No.

For PSG, the Qatari money will continue to pour in for a while, but the brand has lost some shine.  We may look back on their league winning game against Lens as the beginning of the end.

Gentlemen, a meeting has been called at the Shipbank, Saltmarket on Friday lunchtime. Finger buffet, canapés and hula hoops provided. Smart but casual dress. All welcome apart from the Garngad riff-raff.

Thousands of old Firm FC supporters have already purchased tickets and travel for the Europa League final. Sad to say, even if they lose to Leipzig, there will be a big hun presence in Seville.

I can only imagine if it is West Ham, they will team up with the English yobs and the Germans will be the enemy of the Brits.

    A recipe for disaster.

If memory serves me right it was Livingston who gained Meadowbanks membership

And did they not get it from Ferranti Thistle ?

The Scottish Football Writers Player of the Year award is open to players of any nationality who play in Scotland.

The Young Player of the Year is awarded to players who are eligible to play for Scotland.

That’s why Liel Abada hasn’t been mentioned.

I have an old friend who supported Meadowbank Thitle and attended every game, home and away.

When the club changed its name to Livingston and moved to Almondvale, she continued her support and to this day still goes to every game no matter where it is and she lives in Penicuik.

    A true football supporter.

I won a prize for dancing the hoola-hoop in Butlins, Ayr in the early 60s.

Will there be a prize in the Shipbank?

  12. bigrailroadblues on

Tom, there will be a prize if you leave upright. A shower of drunken rascals. And that’s just the bar staff.

  13. My late mum told me my grandad , who passed away before I was born, , lived for a short time in the same close in the Garngad as Jimmy McGrory’s family when he arrived in Glasgow from Pettigo.

As Timbhoy mentioned earlier , St Roch’s naming their stadium after James McGrory is a more than fitting tribute.

  14. Stopping the boat in Loch Foyle and going ashore on a rowing boat to get married is probably the most romantic thing any footballer has ever done.

I am getting all sentimental so i am.

As a follow up quiz question, and this will be a real deep knowledge

what was the name of the liner that brought the Celtic team back from America ?

Likewise, would der Hun sacrifice stopping the 10 to have won the league this year?

Actually, I would have loved the 11 in a row.

  16. Thanks Tom. There was me thinking, they were overlooking the obvious (Celtic) choice, again.

  17. AT see Stivs has beat me to the answer. My great memory of the great man was on 26 May 1967 in Estoril. I had just come from Big Jock,s room where I got to hold the Big Cup, there coming out of his hotel was Jimmy. We spoke to him about seeing the Cup and he replied I could not sleep, I just kept thinking did we win the Cup. So I am now going to assure myself that it is true.

  18. C12, its such wonderful memories you share, I really dont mind how often you tell that tale a surreal 2 days for you , its brilliant

and the liner on the outward passage ?

  20. Leaving out all the hatred from the stands and concentrating solely on the players on the field, I have chosen this combined squad of those currently avaiable from the BBC website.

    McGregor

    Tavenier

    Carter-Vickers

    Goldson

    Barasic

    McGregor

    Jack

    Rogic

    Jota

    Kyogo

    Kent

Hart, Juranovic, Starfelt, Taylor, Aribo, Hatate, Maeda, GG, Abada.

Whilst the starting eleven contains six from Ibrox, the squad of twenty contains only seven.

I think by comparison, that is where we are at with them at the moment.

    I’m sure many will disagree

  21. And in 1931, his connections with Donegal would deepen.

In the summer of 1931, McGrory kept a diary of a club trip to America (an unusual undertaking for a player of the time). His final entry into the diary, dated July 10th 1931 read: “The ship (the RMS Transylvania) arrived off Moville, County Donegal, Eire. I disembarked on the Custom’s Officer’s boat, and that morning, around 8.30am, I started on a life-long journey. I got married.”

His bride, Miss Veronica (Nona) Green had travelled from Glasgow a few days previous. The Daily Record reported: “The (Green) family were proprietors of 13 picture houses, including picture theatres in Europe. The Nuptial Mass, in St Michael’s Church, Moville, on Friday 10th July 1931, was celebrated by the Reverend J.A. Shields, Falcarragh. The best man was Mr A.T. Mullan, Glasgow, and the bridesmaid was Nona’s sister, Marion.”

Has John Beaton ever sent an Old Firm FC player from the field of play?

Not sure but he red carded Stevie G at a game against Livi

Has John Beaton ever awarded a penalty against Old Firm FC ?

Not sure of his overall record but he definitely gave us an early penalty when we beat them 5:1 back in 2018
