When the shine rubs off a club’s brand

267

Those not infected with the football bug often look on in a mixture of dismay and disgust at fans of the game.  This is a benign form of intolerance, usually ill-informed and of no consequence to those of us hooked on the game.

Then you read things that makes you wonder.  Real Madrid are in tonight’s’ Champions League semi-final, having eliminated Paris St Germain in the quarters.  PSG fans were so upset with their one-time idols that game which delivered the 10th league title in the club’s history was scarcely celebrated with a round of applause.

PSG ultras left the game early, not wanting to share the moment with the players, the others left within 10 minutes of full time, not even affording players time to do a circuit of the pitch.  There is being upset and a defeat, and there’s being spoiled.

Football supporting is a contract in delight and despair.  You will see both, if you are very lucky, you will experience trophies in the quantity you and I have enjoyed this past decade or so, but most football fans across the major European leagues will never see their side win a major trophy.  Supporting the game is mostly a harsh condition.

We always knew Celtic could not win everything, although there is a real possibility our Generation of Domination could replicate across many generations.  For me, last season’s losses make the prospect of this season’s success all the sweeter.  Would I celebrate 11-in-a-row as much as a mere one-in-a-row?  No.

For PSG, the Qatari money will continue to pour in for a while, but the brand has lost some shine.  We may look back on their league winning game against Lens as the beginning of the end.

  1. Celtic: Expert hails Dermot Desmond’s ownership model

Celtic: Expert hails Dermot Desmond’s ownership model -Celtic News

Dermot Desmond’s self-sustaining ownership model at Celtic is a perfect example for other clubs to use, according to financial expert Dr. Dan Plumley.

The Irishman is the majority shareholder at Parkhead, fulfilling a lifelong dream by owning the club he has supported since childhood.

During Desmond’s tenure, Celtic have racked up Scottish Premiership titles galore, among numerous other domestic trophies, and another league crown looks to be coming their way this season.

The 71-year-old has run the club in shrewd fashion too, ensuring they are in a healthy financial situation and not getting themselves into worrying amounts of debt.

Speaking to Football Insider, Plumley praised Desmond’s model at Celtic, saying other clubs should take a leaf out of his book:

“It’s always a plus if you can stand on your own two feet. They are set up so they can manage themselves in their own right. We see it too often where a club is solely dependent on one owner.

“If the owner is in trouble, the club’s in trouble. It’s very different at Celtic. You have to class that as a benefit that they aren’t too worried about the owner’s finances.

“This is a blueprint for all clubs. Make them more self-reliant so when the owner does take a hit, they aren’t collateral damage.”

Desmond deserves undoubted credit for the manner in which he has kept Celtic afloat, running the Hoops far more intelligently than some of the more reckless owners elsewhere.

Liverpool owners FSG are a good comparison to use in some ways, with their supporters not always enamoured by a lack of mega-money transfers but the Reds in a strong financial position compared to some of their rivals.

Supporters will always be critical of Desmond – it is the nature of a football fan to never be happy – but he may only be fully appreciated when he eventually sells up.

  2. Unbelievable game.Cant see past City still.Madrid defence, not great. You never know.Since the away goals rule was ditched, the goals have been flooding in.Great stuff.

Is there anybody on here had childhood dreams of owning celtic?

Me and everyone I know dreamed of playing for Celtic, owning Celtic WTF bovine excrement puff piece if ever I read one.

  10. Which Premier League club has the most debt?

The cumulative Premier League clubs’ debt by the end of 2020 was estimated at $5.25 billion. So, which football clubs are in financial trouble in 2021/2022? Here, we have listed the top 10 Premier League teams with the most debt as reported by Deloitte UK.

    10. West Ham United F.C – In at number ten, we find West Ham United. The club was one of the two largest revenue losers last season, linked to the Covid 19 pandemic. The club declared a net debt of $117 million in 2021.

    9. Watford F.C – $139 million The Hornets are also among the top English football clubs in financial trouble in 2021. Despite a loss in revenue and relegation, the club maintained the players and staff wages during the Covid Pandemic. In a statement, the club officials confirmed the efforts put in place to ensure there were no fire sales of players because of the financial situation.

    8. Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C – According to the Deloitte Annual Review of Football Finance, the club reached a net debt of $140 million after the 20/21 season. The club’s official financial statements further revealed the losses in revenue. However, unlike most clubs, the Wolves continued to invest in players by signing Raul Jimenez, Leander Dendoncker, Pedro Neto and Patrick Cutrone.

    7. AFC Bournemouth – In addition to operating in the red, the club suffered a 27% revenue loss during the Covid 19 pandemic. The club was also relegated to the English Football League after finishing in 18th place during the 2020/2021 season.

    6. Leicester City F.C – According to a financial statement by the Foxes for the 2019/2020 season, the Covid-19 pandemic caused a significant revenue loss for the team. In 2020, the club acquired additional land for the expansion of the Foxes home grounds, King Power Stadium. Despite help from the club’s owners, the Srivaddhanaprabha family, the club debt increased to $201 million in the 2021 season.

    5. Liverpool F.C – How much are LFC in debt? Liverpool is the fifth Premier League club with the most debt in 2022, with a net debt of $208 million.

    4. Brighton & Hove Albion F.C – In 2018, the club had the second-largest debt among all English football clubs of about $203 million. The Price of Football website revealed that Tony Bloom, the club’s owner and benefactor has been financing developments and player signings. While other clubs were forced to lay off staff and reduce wages, the club maintained and increased players’ salaries during the pandemic.

    3. Manchester United F.C – Since last year, the club’s debt has reduced to its current value of $561 million by $79 million. Manchester United ranks highly among the top 50 football revenue earners globally and the world’s wealthiest football teams.

    2. Tottenham Hotspurs – Tottenham’s debt has been growing since 2019 when its net debt was $596 million. So, is Tottenham in financial trouble? Currently, the club’s debts stand at $838 million with an estimated rise of $108 million by the end of the 2021 financial year. The club’s rising debts are linked to the construction of the state of the art Tottenham Stadium, wages and operation costs.

    1. Chelsea F.C – $1.8 billion Which club has the highest debt? Listed as one of the world’s most valuable football clubs, Chelsea also has the title of the Premier League clubs with the most debt in 2022. In a statement, the club’s chairman, Bruce Buck, acknowledged the financial performance urging that, ‘The strength, stability and long-term approach of our financial operation mean our revenue streams remain strong. However, COVID-19 will continue to have an impact going into the next financial year as our commercial operations resume normal activities.’ According to Forbes, the Premier League team with the biggest debt owes almost all of its debt to its owner, Roman Abramovich. However, the recent Russian invasion of Ukraine casts some serious doubt on Chelsea’s future as its owner faces a possible ban from the club or sanctions.

Newsnight headlines about the government’s big ideas for treating the cost of living crisis would be funny if they weren’t so serious.

    —–

Well let’s hope it’s as serious & successful as the steps taken during the Covid Lockdown crisis!!!

Scotland received extra funding equal to a quarter of its normal GDP. That injection saved Scotland’s economy, saved thousands of Scottish businesses and circa one million Scottish jobs.

In addition the UK’s world class vaccine research, development and roll-out has saved millions, and is allowing life to return to something like normality.

Now these are serious facts, not political jibes, or, propaganda.

Pythonesque? Yes indeed, Scotland cut adrift from the UK would now be a ‘Norwegian Blue’ – its population’s feet nailed-down by punishing austerity in a de facto bankrupt country, with the SNPcult still waving flags and parroting “Freedumb”.

Significant results in the English Championship tonight.

Looks like Fulham (promoted already) put the tools away, losing at home to Nottingham Forest who are on a great run

    (15 points from last six).

Bournemouth’s form has dropped badly, 7 points in last six and now just 3 in front of Forest with 3 to play.

If there is indeed a bonus payment due to Celtic for Ryan Christie … if Bournemouth reach the Premier League (no idea personally) …

I was reading Bournemouth’s match report just five minutes before you posted. Scrambled a draw from 0-3 down, away at Swansea.

Ryan started the game at No.10 and was substituted at 65mins before the comeback started.

Think I’ll look for their game next week v Nottingham Forest. I’d like Ryan and his team to guts it out.

  22. Morning All,

A wee stat or two to ease nerves ahead of Sunday. Our home form this season reads like this…

    Games Played – 16

    Games Won – 14

    Games Drawn – 2

    Games Lost – 0

    Goals for – 44

    Goals against – 4

That’s a win ration of 88% and we average 2.75 goals per game whilst only conceding 0.25.

Score first, score early and we take the brother in black out of the game…

  23. After ” JHBs” SEVCO SIX….I wonder WHO he would pick as the BEST FOUR Scottish Officials ?

Let me see now, well ……………Theres the Totally Unbiased Brother BEATON as the Ref,

With any number of other HUN Assistants to pick from…….MADHUN, SON of DALLAS, McLEAN, etc etc….

I cant be bothered considering/naming all the other HUN Assistants that ” JHB” would most certainly pick from….

My only surprise is that ” JHB” didnt pick LUNDSTRAM as his ” Hun ENFORCER”…..Still he still has his Poster of Lundstram staunchly tacked onto his bedroom wall to adore every day……
