When the shine rubs off a club’s brand

267

Those not infected with the football bug often look on in a mixture of dismay and disgust at fans of the game.  This is a benign form of intolerance, usually ill-informed and of no consequence to those of us hooked on the game.

Then you read things that makes you wonder.  Real Madrid are in tonight’s’ Champions League semi-final, having eliminated Paris St Germain in the quarters.  PSG fans were so upset with their one-time idols that game which delivered the 10th league title in the club’s history was scarcely celebrated with a round of applause.

PSG ultras left the game early, not wanting to share the moment with the players, the others left within 10 minutes of full time, not even affording players time to do a circuit of the pitch.  There is being upset and a defeat, and there’s being spoiled.

Football supporting is a contract in delight and despair.  You will see both, if you are very lucky, you will experience trophies in the quantity you and I have enjoyed this past decade or so, but most football fans across the major European leagues will never see their side win a major trophy.  Supporting the game is mostly a harsh condition.

We always knew Celtic could not win everything, although there is a real possibility our Generation of Domination could replicate across many generations.  For me, last season’s losses make the prospect of this season’s success all the sweeter.  Would I celebrate 11-in-a-row as much as a mere one-in-a-row?  No.

For PSG, the Qatari money will continue to pour in for a while, but the brand has lost some shine.  We may look back on their league winning game against Lens as the beginning of the end.

  1. I had to smile when I saw JHB praise a link I had posted about DD. Now, I am very much a pragmatist regarding club ownership. Basically, they are all (very rare exceptions) in it for their own ends. I probably stake the stance that it is better the devil you know. But any reasonably debate on that immediately goes out the window when JBH starts insulting the intelligence of both the Celtic support, and the Scottish electorate. They are not only politically unsophisticated, but they are blinded by sectarianism. How can you discuss anything rationally with someone who holds such views?

To praise the current Sevco team, most of whom have won one trophy in their entire history (sorry – forgot the Petrofec Cup or whatever it was called), is just plain stupid. The current Celtic team have:

    The best defence

    The most potent strike force

    The most points

    The League Cup

Were brutally kicked out of the SC semi

Sit 6 points clear with four games to go

To use your own words, ‘Now these are serious facts’.

Yet, worse still is to hold up the UK’s handling of the pandemic as worthy of praise.

If you consider the behaviour of BoJo and company as well – it is far from something to boast about.

To state that what you say is: ‘Now these are serious facts, not political jibes, or, propaganda’ is both sad and an insult to those of us, me included, who buried loved ones with neither a Wake nor a funeral.

Seriously, I’ve suffered it on various occasions.

Scullybhoy…he definitely is at the wind-up, an agent provocateur. That was so obvious yesterday. Pro Dougie Park then pro huns players. Guy’s a lonely fake.

  4. There’s an article in today’s Guardian about consecutive league wins. Now10 would have been a magic number for us, of course, but various teams across the world, and in Europe, have won more than that, including Talea FC in Vanuata (15 titles), while Skonto and Red Imps have 14 each in Europe.

As an extra wee point of interest they asked a question “Has any club ever played every game in every competition in a season?” nTheir focus, of course, was on what Liverpool MIGHT do if they win their quadruple, but to be fair they then came up with this.

“From Liverpool to the Lisbon Lions. As Iain Pearson (and others) points out, Celtic won an unprecedented quintuple in 1966-67. They won Division One (34 games), the Scottish Cup (six games, including one replay), the League Cup (10 games), the Glasgow Cup (three) and, most magically of all, the European Cup (nine). That’s 62 games. For the record, they won 51, lost only three and scored a preposterous 196 goals.”

    I loved the ‘preposterous’ bit!

    Thanks for that.

Two of the three games we lost that season were against Dundee United, both 2-3 defeats in the league. The other defeat was 0-1 away to Vojvodina Novi Sad (Yugoslavia) in the European Cup quarter-final first leg.

A season those who were there will never forget.

But, how many of the Lisbon Lions team got into the JBH select of 1966-67?

  8. Dermot Desmond and his fellow board members, really haven’t put money into Celtic ,The Stadium,Lennoxtown ,Merchandise, etc, all being built with Celtic Supporters money ,They board men are all on Freebie’s while the ordinary fan gets fleeced season after season, take Lord Willie Haughey gives £5 million to lesser Hampden when I know it’s his money ,could have given that cash towards the upgrade at Barrowfield Training Ground.

The various Jimmy McGrory posts yesterday were entertaining, I have it in mind to see St Roch’s play at McGrory Park sometime soon.

Oftentimes I’ve wondered whether he and the mighty Jimmy Quinn were left-footed footballers, only because I recall both received early starts in their Celtic careers replacing injured, established left wingers.

Coneybhoy, I accept that mission young fella. How I suffer to compile these reports.

  17. The cinch sponsorship of £1.8m spread over all the leagues (42 clubs) is ‘sweetie money’ to the Old Firm – probably no more than £80k per season each, e.g. £1m to Premiership and the balance for the other thirty clubs. That’s why Ibrox thinks it’s in its interests to opt out of the advertising. I am not so blinkered that I can’t see some validity in Park’s/Ibrox’s stance. That’s not defending them, just being fair-minded on the actual issue.

Picking a joint Celtic/Rangers team was a bit of fun – some on here should lighten-up. My life is not filled with hatred for players earning a living with other clubs, given different circumstances players like Tavernier, Goldson, Barasic & Kent could have ended up at Celtic. The joint team highlights where we need to strengthen next season – i.e. full-backs, central defence, defensive midfield & a winger, if we are to make a fist of the CL.

Narrow-minded criticism from some is for me, just mind over matter….I don’t mind, and they don’t matter.

Tom, I was at the home game 2 – 3 to Dundee Utd when Ronnie Simpson let in a howler – so, so unlike him, a keeper who could produce the out-of-this-world save occasionally, but was relied upon mostly to save the ones he should save. Anyway, that was the only defeat I saw that season and as you said, one I will never forget (the wee 17 year old that I was!)

  19. See Skysports have decided there were racists comments at Celtic Park despite the police finding nothing to report. Do Sky never cover games at that place on the south side and have they never heard racist remarks game after game? Perhaps they are not sure of what is being sung. Could be they have a poor sound system. That will be right?

The ‘mind over matter’ joke you have cracked before. You should realise it’s not funny second time around.

“My life is not filled with hatred for players earning a living with other clubs”

No, but it does seem to be filled with hatred for all things relating to the GB and SNP.

He MUST also HATE Celtic FC for flying the Irish Tri Colour.

He belongs and lives a TORY CULT, and yet suggests that HE is NOT Narrow Minded ?

Again….WHY would ANY So Called Celtic Supporter see it as a ” Bit of Fun” picking a Celtic and SEVCO Select Squad….

HE also called ” THEMS”….” Rangers”….NOT Sevco, Newco, THEMS, Huns nor The Animals in his Post at 11.34 AM…….That FACT alone speaks volumes.

He just couldnt bring himself to call the Huns ANYTHING but ” Rangers” in his Post.

Wonder what the members of the Tory Cult will say about that on here ?

Probably nothing I suspect….as I am STILL WAITING for the Tory Cult on here to reveal what ever happened to the £350 MILLION POUNDS per week, that Boris and his Brexit Huns PROMISED would go to the NHS If the UK left the EU ?
