When the wealthy borrow from the poor

1829

Sell fans a ticket, you owe them a game of football.  Whether the standard or result it good or bad, it’s a relatively easy commitment to keep.  That’s what fans get in return for spending money on a ticket.

Sell people shares, you owe them a share certificate.  That’s what shareholders get in return for coughing up for shares.

Borrow money from fans and you owe them much more than a game of football or a share certificate.  In many instances that money will have come from people who had to forgo things to provide you with the loan.  You owe them a duty of care that their loan will be repaid, or converted with their agreement.

It beggars belief that an unsecured loan has been offered to Rangers International by fans group, Rangers First.  If, as claimed, the obligations to Sports Direct have been met, the club will have both the ability and the incentive to pass the securities previously held by Sports Direct to the fans group.  The club’s IP, training ground and ancillary assets should now be unencumbered, who better to have security over these critical parts of the club than a fans group?

Unless, of course, the obligations to Sports Direct have not been met.  Or someone else has their eye on the assets.

The claim that Dave King would match Rangers First’s loan took me by surprise.  This was counter to everything I knew and expected of him.  His swift denial was more consistent with expectations.

There is an axiom in football: Any club who has enriched a PR individual to the tune of £500k in the last year is making a serious attempt to divert it’s fans attention.  Celtic’s PR machine deals with the efficient communication of football information and financial reports.  Nothing whatsoever is spend attempting to lead the news agenda.  This often leaves us on the receiving end of that agenda, but we have nothing to hide.  Which is the way it should be.

Few sights in business or football can be more alarming than when purportedly wealthy people borrow money from poorer people.  The warning signs are writ as tall as the Ibrox stands.  This time there is no hidden Ticketus deal people can claim they didn’t know about.

With Celtic’s match played on Sunday, it gives the perfect opportunity for the South Lanarkshire Tims to get along to K Park for the Scottish Cup tie between EK FC and Lothian Thistle.

The winner will take their place in the last 16, with a (likely) 50:50 chance of drawing a top division club. Not to say us Kilby bhoys are nervous, but the prize money and gate share from a last 16 draw is worth 2 years budget to the club. (Ever the romantic, eh…)

Come along, enjoy the spirit of the Cup, sit or stand as you please, and have a pint at half time if that’s your thing. There’s a story being written, and you can be a part of it.

I was astonished by the Sevco statement last night. And as you know, I read an awful lot of wacky things about this saga so it takes a lot to make my jaw drop! Rangers* First clearly thought the money was needed by Sevco and Dave King was going to match it. To the extent that they had spoken to the papers about it.

The possibility of the loan being made was remarkable enough in itself. But for the club then to issue a statement slapping them down in no uncertain terms… Well, that was ‘off the radar’ astonishing!

Meanwhile, here is my latest. All about amazing bargain basement signings by Sevco…

  6. Are Rangers First now so committed after their public statements that it would be too embarrassing to back away when it turns out that DK won’t be “immediately” matching their “loan”?

If I was them I’d happily be embarrassed and back away. Luckily, I’m not…

The two players they signed from Accrington were on pre-contracts. I would expect that these lads will replace other people in the squad who are on higher wages (they are desperately trying to punt David Templeton, Nicky Law, Nicky Clark and Fraser Aird)

Maybe they will release a couple in the summer. Maybe some of the loan players won’t be coming back.

I’m amazed to see that there is actually a transfer fee involved with the Brentford chap.

Seems not all huns are as thick as we think….

Copy of my letter sent to James Blair today –

    Mr Blair,

Further to our telephone discussion today I need to have the contents of this e mail recorded and I will be making it public to the Rangers Supporters.

I am requesting that Rangers First put on HOLD with immediate effect the offer to loan Rangers International Football Club £500,000.This is nothing to do with not wishing to assisting the club I love.

This request is 100% to question and challenge the diligence, lack of process and lack of detail and transparency given to the hard working Rangers supporters that put the money in the Rangers First account expecting it to be used to buy Shares.

I want to point out to you that as a member of Rangers First I request a full open Meeting to discuss implications of this loan in full and it is paramount that all Rangers First members be allowed to ask as many questions relating to this loan in as much detail as required to allow ALL to make a clear informed decision on what is best for Rangers First.

Rangers First has an upcoming AGM at the end of January or early February 2016, At this AGM the Rangers First members should be given the respect deserved by discussing this loan proposal at the AGM and then deciding what type of person we want to vote into office as a Director of Rangers First. Individuals that will never be disrespectful to our members or enter into discussions without 100% Transparency.

I have had discussions today with Rangers First Board members James you being one of them and it is clear there is discord regarding Rangers First and its direction. One Rangers First Board member has resigned and others have agreed that it might be the correct decision to suspend the vote on giving this loan until the internal politics of Rangers First is discussed and a harmonious Board invite our member to a meeting to discuss all the detail of this UNSECURED LOAN.

I want to put it on record that I am appalled that you think putting this vote on a website with only 4 days till it closes and with no real detail or discussion showing a total lack of respect to our members. This is a HUGE DECISION and must not be rushed through.

All our Members must be informed Immediately that a Director has resigned as a matter of principal regarding the lack of diligence and Transparency and other Directors are not comfortable with the workings of Rangers First or your position at Rangers First.

This leads me to another request that you James Blair must resign from Rangers First with immediate effect as there is a clear conflict of interest in your role as Rangers First Secretary and also the Secretary of Rangers international.

Rangers First must always be 100% INDEPENDENT and have no Board Member with a split Loyalty. This is a serious request and I am asking for a Meeting to be arranged as a matter of urgency to discuss this matter.

I have also had conversations today with many other Rangers First Members that want a full discussion on this matter.

I repeat my request that Rangers First must SUSPEND this vote until a full meeting is arranged to discuss the detail.

I repeat my request that you resign with Immediate effect and I request you accept this as a full Complaint into your position at Rangers First.

I also request that this e mail be shown to all Directors of Rangers First with immediate effect and I ask that the Board convene an urgent meeting to discuss the suspension of this vote and your position as a Board Member at Rangers First.

I look forward to an early reply

    An unsecured loan eh?

Is that not kind of like a “gift”?

    ————————-

Probably. They don’t really pay loans back, innit?

  21. Celtic Football Club have a wonderful PR department, and I have dealt with them many many times with questions that I needed answered and I have been well looked after, and to tell the truth they couldent answer all my questions the way I would have liked, but answer they did, so don’t just follow like sheep if you have never dealt with them, then you don’t know what your talking about, it’s called making mischief, and listening to malcontents who haven’t a ferkin clue either.

  22. Celtic have the 23-yr-old Romanian right back Andrei Peteleu in on trial too.

How many right backs do we need? As I’ve said before we collect players,we don’t sign a specific player for a specific position. I know it’s only a trial, but are we not wasting time and money again here?

  23. Paul 67

You get what you pay for, however the coverage of all things Celetic be it it Sky Sports to BBC Scotland STV is evidence that their[Sevco] treatment and reporting is different from ours, I fully expect in the weeks and months ahead that a Celtic fan will be on the news or in the papers from dropping litter.

The PR machine of Celtic is a joke
