When we were kings

579

Our now-annual defeat against St Johnstone yesterday was a timely reminder of how close to defeat any team can be if they are even slightly off their game.  Despite fighting the urge not to be disrespectful to yesterdays’ victors, they are a poor team, previously without a win, bottom of the league and they had to cancel training during the week due to illness in their small squad.

But, they deservedly beat Celtic.

Kris Commons was a bright light among the largely disorganised looking team structure.  Tony Watt also did well, even if he is still beating himself up for passing up the best chance of the game in the dying seconds, but defensively we were turned over, the midfield singularly failed to control the ball and Gary Hooper looked miles away from scoring his first league goal of the season.

Did we need a sharp reminder of the level of performance required against Benfica on Wednesday?  It looks like it.

When we were kings

Don’t worry too much, a team with Fallon, Gemmell, McNeill, Murdoch, Auld, Johnstone and Wallace were turned over 0-2 at home by Hearts in 1969.  A few days later Eusebio and Benfica, who lost the 1968 European Cup final after extra-time, a year after Celtic won the tournament, walked off Celtic Park having lost 3-0.

Artur Jorge played for Benfica that night.  Apparently he still lurks in the corridors.

Sorry,folks-wasn’t trying to be a tease. I considered saying it was Murdo McLeod, just to annoy KEVJUNGLE-pffft,could have been any or all of them.

But no,it was Jabba who put his name to it-he even put his picture on it,which fair put me off my cornflakes!

    Truly astonishing,even by his standards.

The big news this morning is ole Legless has fallen off the wagon over the weekend and landed firmly on his head.

His blog today takes insanity to new levels. It’s an absolute belter that should secure his long-term future in Castairs.

I was laughing out loud on a train full of strangers while attemting to make sense of it all. The perfect tonic after a bad result on Saturday.

‘The reason why Celtic have ‘no case to answer’ over the ole Juninho EBT is that the amount of tax unpaid to the revenue over said EBT is £0 0p.’

    That’s not the issue.

The issue is whether the contract of employment lodged with the SFA encompassed all that it was required to.

    It appears that it did.

Ole Ernesto -thanks for confirming absence of issue in any of non-issues raised vis-a -vis ‘Old Firm EBT furore.

  7. For the attention of lurking huns/MSM:

The SPL/SFA are not interested in the legality or otherwise of EBTs. This is the domain of HMRC, who are currently preparing to make the outcome of the FTTT known.

All the SPL/SFA want to know is whether the contracts they received from clubs relating to players included all details of remuneration. If these didn’t, then clubs may have broken rules relating to player registrations.

Any attempt to confuse by saying EBTS were mentioned in accounts is wrong and I suspect the journalists know this.

“The story has been distorted, in some cases by misunderstanding, but in others by deliberate design.”

    Is that Jabba’s confession?

I had to stop reading it a few paragraphs later. Pitiful stuff that reeks of desperation. I’m actually embarrassed for Traynor. He really is a joke figure in so many ways.

  9. the glorious balance sheet on

For the attention of Jim Traynor and his long suffering readers-

    1. When Rangers went into administration in Feb 2012 they were deducted 10 points under the prescribed SPL rules. They were punished by no more and no less than they were due, and were the same punishment would have been handed down to any other club in that position.

    2. When Rangers were liquidated, the SPL and SFA tried to accomodate the Newco, Sevco5088, in the SPL initially, and when that plan was met with outrage, into SFL1.

No other new club would be fasttracked into the SPL, SFL1 or even SFL3 (as Sevco ultimately were and all without meeting SFA licencing/audit requirements).

So, Jabba, Sevco were actually not punished, but in fact were let-off by being allowed into Division 3.

    3. Jabba says poor Rangers have been punished by losing players following liquidation. Again they were treated in the same way as any other business was in the liquidation scenario. Does Jabba think that Woolworths, Oddbins, Borders Bookstore or any other failed business were “unfairly punished” when their staff moved on to other employment following liquidation?

    4. “Poor Rangers fans suffering other fans laughing at them.”

How does that boot fit on the other foot? Fans of the team that formerly was Rangers made it their stock in trade to look down their noses at the rest of Scottish football, if Annan, Peterhead, Elgin fans want to give them some stick back then thats life. Getting gyp off lower league fans is not a valid reason for the SPL to abandonm the illegal dual cointract investigation.

    5. “Rangers/Sevco have been punished enough.” Actually no they haven`t. They have been given SFA membership without satisfying the 3 years audited records, they have already broken the terms of this membership by failing to honour their agreement to accept punishements due to the former Rangers and to comply with investigations, and they were fast-tracked into the SFL ahead of other more eligible cases such as Spartans.

The alleged use of dual contracts, and due punishment for this, is separate from the consequences that followed Rangers adminstration and liquidation.

Jabba of course knows this but is happy to present his biased opinions as fact as part of the Daily Record`s transformation to the Rangers News.

“Ole Sevco maintained another world record at weekend of being the only club in the world (including Sevconia) never to have won a league game away from home.”

They should stick a star on their shirts for that.

  11. BMCUWP – At first I thought you had awenaw’ed that article, so I looked it up. I need a shower.

Love this – “They cheated the tax man, the country and their fellow clubs. But did they really?” I guess we all imagined that 70m tax bill in the creditors report, then.

I find it hilarious that every time a case is brought which the MSM don’t like, they quote the cost of lengthy legal proceedings, wasted time and money thrown at lawyers. Remember when Celtic took on the SFA rulebook over Neil’s touchline suspension? Yet I don’t recall such horror when D&P took their transfer ban to the court of sessions.

This is also an absolute peach – “if anything had been amiss with Rangers’ practice why wouldn’t Celtic have brought it to light?”. Indeed, why didn’t Dundee Utd? Or Forfar Athletic? Or Smithkline Beecham?? Why didn’t someone take responsibility for rangers accounts other than rangers?

  12. traditionalist88 on

If ever we needed a reminder about the importance of CL football – thanks to the famous 3 match packages we now have 3 home sell outs to look forward to(bar a few returns from Benfica)

In last seasons Europa League we played host to Athletico Madrid and Udinese – I wonder what the official attendances were those evenings?

In terms of pure box office – you’d probably rank last seasons opponents compared to this seasons as follows:

    1. Barca

    2. Athletico

    3. Benfica

    4. Udinese

    5. Spartak Moscow

    6. Rennes

ie. not too much between the sides from 2-5. Thanks to the marketing power of the CL we have all but sold out all home matches already this season, remarkable considering that one of these is against Spartak Moscow in December and that any last match in the group stage always has the potential to be a dead rubber.

Has the Europa League rebranding failed completely, are the CL clubs holding way too much influence or do we just have a minority of fans who will only turn up for a big occasion?!

How do we combat this mindset? Is selling 10k Overseas season tickets a bit on the optimistic side?!

As for any delay of investigation and action, maybe we will find out soon who was privy to the information, vested interest can be dismissed as motive for official obfuscation surely.

  14. Is this a sign of a more harmonious future ahead of us all?

Celtic fans and UnHoly Mess FC (UHMFC) fans finally agreeing on 2 key issues:

Brandished in bright technicolour by some intelligent UHMFC (clearly one who stayed on at school long enough to learn to write) at Annan is a sign declaring that the SFA and SPL are wholly corrupt. We the Celtic fans wholly agree.

That UHMFC are floundering like some deep sea fish in the depths of the 4th Division (officially called Division 3 – but is in fact the 4th Division) is evidence of said corrupt officials decision making. Again Celtic fans wholly endorse this claim.

Sadly however, we are not on the verge of a bright new horizon. The UHMFC fans feel unjustly treated by the SFA & SPL by bannishing them to the further reaches of the Scottish realm to play teams such long European pedigrees as Peterhead, Annan, Elgin (The Greats!). Whilst the Celtic fans and everyone else in the country feels that it is only through the corruption at the heart of the Scottish football that UHMFC are permitted to play against Peterhead, Annan, Elgin etc…

It is a truly perplexing that Celtic and UHMFC can agree but for entirely opposing reasons.

It has to be recognised however, that Celtic fans are a whole lot happier with this confusion than UHMFC fans.

On another matter, I was wondering, what happens to all this UnHoly Mess if the judge who appointed D&P decides after review that their appointment was invalid?

Does it mean that this whole fiasco is declared a ‘bum deal’ and we have to go back to Valentine’s day again?

Would it be like watching reruns of your favourite movie (or horror movie for all those who follow UHMFC)?

  16. Kitalba @ 10:20,

    That was my guess.

Even by Mr Traynor’s standards that was a very poor piece.

The all seem to be getting hot under the collar – things are coming to ahead and the vibes I’m picking up is it’s not very good for SDM & Co.

  17. Groupon deal for Barcalona bhoys-£179 per person for arrivals between 1 and 28 October 2012 (Up to 44% off)

Price including flights from Stansted,Luton, and Gatwick and 2 nights in Expo Hotel. Can be bought in the next 7 days.Always worth checking the small print.

  18. Something they all seem to forget when they make this excuse that the SFA/SPL had these things in the accounts is that a plethora of guys on the Rangers board were also on the SFA/SPL payroll as well overseeing all this stuff.

When you had an SFA run by George Peat and Gordon Smith does anyone else think that they weren’t looking too carefully?

Lets face it, they gave them a European licence for last year when they really shouldn’t have had one because of the wee tax case – ask Terry ONeill about that one.

For all those looking for decent tapas in Glasgow: you won’t find any.

Andaluz, Torres and Barca all have the ding of the microwave punctuating their restaurants and are all terrible.

Cafe Tinto on Battlefield Road is a decent Tapas Bar, it’s a small place so will need to book. Can recommend the cod and whitbait with aioli. Been there a few times and have never heard the ping of a microwave.

CELTIC kick off their UEFA Champions League qualifying campaign with a home game against Benfica this Wednesday, September 19. And there’s still a chance to get along to Paradise and cheer on the Bhoys for what will be a special European night.

A number of tickets for the match have been returned by Benfica, and these single match tickets are available to buy.

These are priced from £40 adults and £30 concessions and are available online, by calling 0871 226 1888* or by visiting the Celtic Ticket Office.

He sure doesn’t like seeing Rangers investigated.

His arguments – such as they are, when separated from the deliberate obfuscation – are akin to demanding the court show mercy on someone who killed his own parents, on the grounds that he is an orphan.
