When you got nothing, you got nothing to lose

So why go to court when you know you have signed up to a rule (literally) that forbids you from going to court and that will almost certainly lead to your expulsion from football?

Because almost certainly being expelled from football is a better option than the alternative.

As Bob said: “When you got nothing, you got nothing to lose”.

They have nothing. Nothing.

  1. The Moon Bhoys @ 20.21,

How different that is from the Labour-dominated Scotland that we’d become used to!

What an amazing post. Paul’s first article today was magical to read and your post is even more magical. Thanks for sharing it.

thanks for the daly link, I just watched it. Prince Albert of Monaco – nearly gave myself a hernia laughing at that one

  4. Gordon & MadraRua – phenominal from both of you. Gordon, sadly I did not get but some of my family did and they told great stories like yours. I have a few from my own experiences that night but ‘nout like them you’ve telt’!

Madra – extremely moving stuff. Guess Celtic does that to you. I got to Johnny Thomson’s grave this year for the first time in my 70 years (disgraceful!) and cried tears of sadness and joy that day. Had a similar experience reading your story.

Thank you both. What a club!

  7. By the way did I see some daft so called celebs telling us to vote independence today. Most of home dont actually live here?

Quality post as well, thanks for sharing and looking forward to listening to the links.

  10. Gordon – a very fine post indeed. Was your brother Jimmy a civil servant in East Kilbride with a subsequent fondness for Turkey?

  11. Am I correct in thinking that we were the first to win, and Billy McNeil the first captain to lift that European Cup?

Didn’t they give the old one to Real Madrid, and ’67 Final was first with new cup?

Or am I completely barking up the wrong tree, or just barking :-)

    MadraRua,

Respect to you and a toast to those since passed on.

I love Limerick city and have great friends their and get over often.

One of my best memories was watching the treble winning scottish cup win in Tims and the mental celebrations that followed. You were always given a warm welcome when you arrived in the Hoops.

Joe Dunn is a friend and workmate and actually sits beside me at Celtic Park. A true Gentleman and I enjoy a beer with him at most games and a rather boozy night in their Greenock where Messrs Lawell and Lennon were in attendance. I know he used to bring a load of Celtic items to the pub on his many visits.

A heartwarming story on this our clubs most special day.

Gordon, great story…my trip was much less traumatic. Our itinerary allowed for a sight-seeing tour of Lisbon but it never happened as we also arrived much later than anticipated. Our coach took us directly to the stadium. The tension started to rise as the traffic was horrendous, then the driver decided on another route which was just as bad. We eventually got there and I remember the quick whip-round for the driver who, in his excitement shouted…” Benfica catolica…Celtic catolica…” I think a few extra coins were put in the hat for that. I also remember the hurried walk from the coach to the stadium through a small wooded area where locals were giving out green and white “coolie hats” (sporting’s colours) to the fans…To my surprise we entered the stadium and went down the stairs to the terracing, highly unusual…my heart was hammering as I could hear the fans singing. My first view saw the bhoys emerging from the tunnel…What a stadium, what a noise, what a sight…what a lump in my throat!! I was in the Celtic end behind Ronnie’s first half goal…After Tommy’s equaliser we were discussing a possible replay when…oh my god! Stevie scored…tears tears and more tears…hugging strangers, dancing with locals who were all with us…jumping the moat, digging up a wee bit of turf (which died in my mum’s geranium pot some days later)…Being applauded as we walked into Benfica’s supporters club in downtown Lisbon, walking through the city feeling so, so proud to be a young Tim…the wonderful chaos at the airport when the team arrived and flying home ( probably higher than the plane ) and rounding it off at Celtic Park the next evening…Paradise…sheer paradise!!!

  15. Alan Cumming – doesnt he live in LA – and yet again another one of these numpties telling us to vote indepedence ????????

  16. Gordon & MadraRua, would loved to have heard those stories over a couple of pints. Simply put, they say everything about what I hope to be as a person and as a fan.

    Thank you.

  20. I was told a story of two boys from Rutherglen

who hitch hiked it all the way to Lisbon.

It was so hot during the day they walked at night.

    God bless you Tony J.

  21. Gordon & MadraRua excellent posts – brought back memories.

My pal and I had just left school and used to take the no.46 from the ‘milk to all the home games – queued down London Road many a time for tickets.

At the beginning of the ’67 season we decided to take out (via his mum) a Celtic Pools Agent book (to ensure tickets) – one of the best decisions we ever made.

We witnessed a clean sweep – every home game; league, cup, finals and the European Cup run – watched the final on b&w TV.

Funny how things you did as a teenager change; fashion sense (Mods), politics (radical), rebellion, food and drink tastes (discovering curry, wine etc) – the list is endless but following Celtic F.C. is constant!

’67 and Lisbon was a great time – 45 years later my expectations haven’t changed – I follow the Bhoys anticipating the same level of entertainment!

Since 2009, Champions League winners have not kept the real trophy, which remains in UEFA’s keeping at all times. A full-size replica trophy, the Champions League winners trophy, is awarded to the winning club with their name engraved on it. Winning clubs are also permitted to make replicas of their own; however, they must be clearly marked as such and can be a maximum of eighty percent the size of the actual trophy.

The original European Cup trophy was donated by L’Équipe, a French sports newspaper. This trophy was awarded permanently to Real Madrid in March 1967. At the time, they were the reigning champions, and had won six titles altogether, including the first five competitions from 1956 to 1960. Celtic thus became the first club to win the cup in its current design in 1967.

The replacement trophy, with a somewhat different design from the original, was commissioned by UEFA from Jörg Stadelmann, a jeweller from Bern in Switzerland. At a cost of 10,000 Swiss francs, it was silver, 74 cm high, weighing 8 kg. The trophy bears the title “COUPE DES CLUBS CHAMPIONS EUROPÉENS'”. Subsequent replacement trophies have replicated this design. In Spanish, it is nicknamed La Orejona (“big-ears”) because of the shape of the handles and for this reason, Luis Omar Tapia, a long-time ESPN UCL announcer made the name “la Orejona” popular on the American continents.
