Where is this relationship going?

Signing young players on loan has worked well for Celtic in the recent past: Patrick Roberts and Odsonne Edouard, being good examples.  While others, like Charly Musonda, failed to make the grade.  Musonda had talent (you remember that chip against Zenit), but he never looked up to the physical challenges of the professional game.

When Celtic sign the likes of Timothy Weah on a short-term loan, our initial thought is, “Where is this relationship going?”  Will the loan be extended, as it was for Roberts, or end in a purchase, as it did for Edouard, or will this be a one-off gig?

Weah appears to have abundant talent but his chances of breakthrough at PSG are limited.  Mbappe, Neymar and Cavani head an illustrious list of strikers at a club always looking to add to their squad.  It is more likely that the Paris club will look to build Weah’s value at Celtic in the hope of earning an inflated transfer fee.  This practice is how all tier-one clubs operate and underpins their Financial Fair Play credentials.

It is important for Celtic to build a squad – to manage our assets.  The try before you buy model, used effectively with Edouard, works well in this regard.  Building relationships with PSG or Man City, who know their players can gain necessary experience and appreciate in value, means we remain a valuable option for future deals.

But we also need to win football games, irrespective of more strategic concerns, even if there is no long-term relationship with the player.  Sometimes it is OK for a relationship not to last beyond the summer.

Welcome to Celtic, Timothy.

Just booked a week in Antigua (beginning of February)….

Dont know much Antiguan reggae, but if anyone does, I am assuming one of you guys would… I”m always happy to continue my CQN musical education. So, if you have any recommendations, …

Otherwise, I guess I will just have to get by dancing on the beach with a beautiful lady to some soca or calypso….

    :)

  2. Why couldn’t we just invest in the future by putting big money (by our standards) for 1 hit 20-25 M and we have Champions League secured forever ? We have the finance to do it and over a period it will work out to be the shrewdest investment.

  3. After the summer of discontent even BR didn’t think he’d be in a mud fight with Sevco, but we are, and for the first and only time, they dominated BR’s side, makeshift as it was. Had the sides re met at Celtic Park on the Wednesday we’d have humped them IMHO because every dog, had had its day.

The Ibrokes fanny fare complete without Celtic fans, but including random bricks at bus, minutes silence, visiting army generals , loyal MP’s, SPL flame throwers normally restricted to champions day, bent referee and assistants just in case, helped the jaked up side make Celtic wilt on game thirteen

In the lead up to our big day at the bigotdome the holes were punched by Hearts, Hibs, Kilmarnock, and even Livingston had a pop, at BR drooping high press where players were sussed in season two. Warning signs ignored apres invincibles, falling out was inevitable at Celtic between custiodian and visionary. The ‘visionary’ at Celtic has the tendency to move on after x number of titles, when ‘the board’ whether is its Quinn or Kelly, brilliant young managers will get bored with having no reel revenue, where even Bolton had more money and Celtic’s restriction to legitimate caution wins.

Scottish legally bought and paid for transfer record smashed, some old favourites have faltered in a maligned league that is much, much better than its portrayed by SMSM, that now daily, focusses itself on Celtic’s massive financial advantage that goes beyond the world of Bosman, whenever we like. Complacency is a word often thrown around but Moussa Dembele’s desire to be the king of Lyon instead of Glasgow was a gift from god for Celtic supporters, one which the custodians will not get away without delivering.

Think you are more likely to get Calypso and Soca in Antigua.I also think any reggae there is likely to be pap for tourists..I ‘d speculate that you’ll find good Calypso /Soca in bars frequented by locals .

    Doon the pan that’s where.

Brendan has won a double treble.

He deserves to build a team of bought players, not loan signings.

Paddy Roberts the example. Loaned for few seasons then when he’s recalled to mother club we miss him badly. Had he been purchased then who knows where we would be …still in ch lge ? 15/20 points clear in the lge ?

Now we may rely on weah and his goals only for him to leave end of season.

I’d see the point of this loan model if we were sevco and skint but we aren’t yet act like it.

Lawwell is holding back Brendan and the club whilst boosting his pension at the clubs expense year on in.

    Before you ask …

Edouard £9 mill = probably £1mill per year over 9 yrs.

SoT… that was my sense, but you guys know much more about that scene, so thought I would check. And, as I said, a little bit of soca on a beach isn’t much too bad … so I wont complain too much…..

TH … never really a queen fan, but I have heard good things about the film, and particularly about his performance. So, I will probably see it, but might wait until it comes onto netflix to see it …

  9. Who would you prefer – a crap perm player like Marvin Compper who contributes feck all and smells out the place on generous terms or a long term loanee like Paddy Roberts ?

Was in Antigua on a job many years ago.

We were told about a bar near beach with good live reggae.

Went along with company and the place was great and music decent.

It was great fun and locals were friendly.

Until a crowd of mostly English jobs entered with NF,Union Jack and bulldog tattoos appeared and were hellbent on trouble.

Turns out a navy warship was in port and their good old racist behavior was being fueled by their numbers.

I told my companions we should leave as trouble was coming so we stood off to the side till they finished their drinks.

Suddenly the place erupts with chairs and bottles started flying.

It was bedlam but we were away from the trouble.

The military and local police arrived promptly and many were arrested.

Lots of people were left needing stitches and a few went to hospital with worse.

    Was a pretty wild night.

Neither. I’d prefer the rat board to spend big.

Spend big and gain it all back in one season qualifying for ch lge.

    Speculate to accumulate.

Not on penny pinching signings and loan players who play 3 games a year.

Took my 76 year old mum there a year ago…. but, we didn’t really leave the resort, so, am hoping to see a bit more of the country this time.

Thought it would be too much for her at her age … but since then, I think she has been in Thailand, did a cruise up the danube in the summer, ireland/Scotland in the fall, and is leaving next week for a three week trip to Machu Pichu, and the amazon!

I thought I was taking it easy for her …. in hindsight, it might have been the other way ’round!

“Lawwell is holding back Brendan and the club whilst boosting his pension at the clubs expense year on in.”

Lawwell is feckin employee who does what his employers ask of him.

His wages and bonus and pension are agreed between him his employer..

He does not take money out of an allocated transfer fund and stick it in his pension. That would be fraud and he could go to jail for that.

God bless Peter Lawwell, keeping the green flag flying in spite of the naysayers and begrudgers.

  18. Chris Sutton has this to say.

“Celtic are chasing Vakoun Issouf Bayo but it’s hardly an inspiring target. Even his own manager at Dunajska Streda says he’s a raw prospect with a dodgy first touch and a struggle with tap-ins.”

Are we signing a Morelos twin?

Guess it’s with an eye on future bumper transfer fee when we sell him to China or an unknown club in an unknown universe.

Lawwell is the CEO. He makes the majority of the business decisions for the club. His bonus is determined by an executive committee i believe, but I’m unsure of its make-up.

Obviously DD holds sway over certain aspects being our largest individual shareholder and a director as well.

However, to draw an equivalence between Lawwell and standard ’employee’ is erroneous.

So Lawwell can do what he likes with Celtics money…..???

Siphon off transfer funds for his own use..

Decide to underfund the club so that it fails and he can get a bigger bonus ( how in the name of all that is holy does that work)

    He does what he’s told..

he’s not the big bad bogey man people think he is.

@ WHAT IS THE STARS on 8TH JANUARY 2019 4:59 PM

Lawwell is the CEO. He is in charge of the running of the club. I recognise that DD is the largest individual shareholder and is also a director so I’d imagine his opinions are certainly taken into consideration (read: followed).

However, Lawwell earned £2.6m last year (salary and bonus) , so for that amount of money (which is obscene for a club of our size) I’d expect that he is very hands on with the running of the club.

I don’t think Lawwell is committing fraud of course not, but under his stewardship his salary (which will be decided amongst the directors) has increased many times over, however there has not been an equivalent increase in, nor an equivalent importance placed upon, our transfer dealings or our team; this has been to our detriment.

To think that Lawwell is doing a sterling job is misguided.
