“Where’s the signings” chat

223

The players are back in town training and there’s’ already a bit of “where’s the signings” chat.  We are five weeks away from the season starting, nine away from the first derby game and over eleven away from the start of the Champions League campaign.  Patience is not always rewarded, but it is constantly needed.

Players available this early in the window are either out of contract, unwanted by their current club, or high risk.  There is a time for Celtic to engage in all of the above, but if you were in charge, is this where you would want Celtic to shop?

Clubs selling a top talent want to test the market to the fullest.  With one keen buyer on the hook, that means touting the player around hoping that a bigger fish is left short late in the window and bites at a higher price.  They will also want backfill lined up.

If you are in charge and you know you are going to need to wait until late in the window for top talent, would you go down your list to ‘get the players in early’?  How far down would you go?

If you are in the angry blogger business; Christmas comes in the early summer.  The rest of us just need to wait for the tinsel.

    Your point was covered.

Mark Lawwell was sacked and no reason was given so we can jump to any conclusion we like.

Brendan was not sacked, thank God, but there was unrest and calls for it by malcontents in the support.

So, am I to conclude that your take is that Brendan was diplomatically lying about his involvement with the transfers? But eventually when the pressure was raised he threw Mark Lawwell under a bus for it?

Or do you want to elaborate?

  2. Saint Stivs @ 6:57 pm

    I agree.

    So the question becomes…

Why has another club yet to meet our club’s valuation, and took O’Riley from us?

  3. SGtBs @ 6:50 PM,

“Mark Lawwell was sacked and no reason was given so we can jump to any conclusion we like.

Mark Lawwell was not thrown under a bus, nor was he sacked for no reason.

There had been a clear uplift in recruitment when Ange Postecoglou came in as manager.

When Mark Lawwell came in as Head of recruitment in May 2022 the recruitment took a turn for the worse.

ML had no track record as Head of recruitment before he came to Celtic

ML did a poor job at Celtic as Head of recruitment

Now fholk “ITK” like P67 and Burnley78 have told us Mark’s a talented guy who will be in a senior recruitment role at one of the EPL’s top Clubs this season coming.

That will be interesting to see and his performance in the role can be assessed by Celtic neutrals.

However, we can only go on his known track record, which went from non-existent to poor.

Brendan Rodgers on the other hand is a tier one manager with a great track record.

On his return to Celtic, despite assurances to the contrary, he had to do his job with one hand tied behind his back due to poor recruitment, he stayed as a team player, as he’d been asked to do until the situation was beyond a joke in January of this year.

He took the bull by the horns and can be properly assessed in the coming season.

“…one of the greatest adventures of the Celtic Club”

An estimated crowd of 15,000 gathered on the banks of the Clyde to watch the Celtic party depart from Yorkhill Quay on the good ship Caledonia. The crowd lined the course of the river from all the way down to Greenock hoping to cath a glimpse of their idols and the Scottish Cup. The Celtic playing squad on board the ship consisted of the following 17 players:

John Thomson, Willie Cook, Willie ‘Peter’ McGonagle, Jock Morrison, Peter Wilson, Jimmy McStay, Chic Geatons, Robert Whitelaw, D Currie, Willie Hughes, Bertie Thomson, Alec Thomson, Jimmy McGrory Peter Scarf, Charlie Napier, Joe McGhee and Hugh Smith.

The magnificent James Edward McGrory. A man whose greatness shall always be cherished by Celtic folk forever.

Brendan Rodgers on the other hand is a tier one manager with a great track record but not in the transfer market

On his return to Celtic, despite assurances to the contrary, including his own assurance to the support that he was fully involved in all the signings he had to do his job with one hand tied behind his back which he must have placed there himself due to his part in the poor recruitment, he stayed as a team player, as he’d been asked to do until the situation was beyond a joke in January of this year.

He took the bull by the horns What?- after 2 transfer windows where he was coach and involved in the transfer deals, he waits and wastes two transfer windows before asserting himself? Why not involve yourself from the start like you said you were doing?and can be properly assessed in the coming season.

  10. PeterLatchfordsBelly on

Go to agree. Petulant to complain during this dead part of the window.

I will judge it once it’s over.

If it’s more of the same gash then we’ll all have the same reason for righteous anger.

I don’t think it will be,

Also, I’m very encouraged at the progress being made to move surplus players on.

I’ve never had my doubts about Brendan’s ability as a football manager but to describe him as tier one is a bit much surely? Especially when his record is, at best, mixed when it comes to the 2 things you are most critical about of the board for – European success and recruitment.

  12. AuroraBorealis79 on

Despite the nonsense trumped out by the blog host Celtic should be 3 signings in by now. Bernardo, Idah & a replacement goalkeeper. The goalkeeper issue should have been ironed out months ago. I think it is fair to suggest that Celtic once again will be shopping in the bargain basement, accompanied by 1 or 2 panic buys at the close of the window as the board get freaked out by headlines of “Rangers sign 1 time 60m player.

P67, I think it is time you dropped the “Noy Lazy Journalism”. It doesn’t fit

  13. Called it out and parked till season was done.

I don’t really want to go off tangent and get bogged down in ratings out of 10 but I’d say for the most part I’d judge it relative to expectation. That last Tommy Burns season was magnificent. To only focus on the end result would do him a great disservice so I’d be calling that an 8 or a 9. The football swashbuckling, up against a dominant Rangers side with a significant financial advantage. That is no longer the case. It is us with a significant financial advantage yet ours is sitting in a bank account whilst theirs was on the pitch. The huns were dreadful last year. They sacked their manager in October. To lose a league to them was unthinkable. And yet we made it possible. It’s entirely possible if we signed SVH rather than Idah we could have lost that league. Small margins. You take the win and breathe a sigh of relief. But no one at the club should be parting themselves on the back thinking it was a job well done. I sat all summer last year thinking they can’t possibly let us down again. I bought into the were going to try and do something in Europe narrative. Like a complete sucker. I will not be doing the same this year. Trust is earned. And that account is empty.

  16. You can only sign players if they want to come to Scotland and their club is willing to let them go.

  17. A double.

    We won a double

We won ten and drew two in the last twelve games.

I will give the managers 7.5.

He won two trophies for goodness sake.

  18. Vale has signed Goalkeeper, CH, LB and 2 strikers. Maybe we should hire their recruitment team ☺️

  19. 6 / 7 / 8 I’m not going to grumble. He was let down badly so depends on how much blame you affix to the recruitment. And how much influence you believe he had on them. He may have signed off on the signings. But in a these are your options which ones do you want kinda way. Regardless I think he could have got a better tune out the players. But we did finish the season stronger so hopefully that bodes well

    i agree

and winning leagues and cups gives us celebration nights out that i will never get tired of partaking in regardless of how many we win. 😆

but i think the other point is that we didnt do anything over and above our pre-season ambition last year, or anything over and above what we thought we were capable of, or over and above what we should be achieving when we rake in so much more cash compared to our rivals.

unlike our 67 win and leicester winning the premiership for example that were way over and above expectation.

what we done last season wasnt but still gave great times.

    who knows.

I’m still celebrating 5-0 v Kilmarnock and the 1-0 v the hun in the cup final. I may go to the bad fire. Says Mrs BRRB.

  23. I know some old celts who will say they thought they were winning old big ears from the quarters and they feared losing in the cup final and against the huns on jinky dAy.

Anyways, a good evening to you all from the New Road Inn, Blackpool. I hope that all you fine Celts are hale and hearty. If not, why not?🤔

  25. I think Brendan did well after coming in. I never have high expectations of a new manager in their first year. I hope, like everyone else, we get players in that will strengthen the first team. I really hope we have a very good keeper lined up.

  26. Bada – I keep saying the best way to stop the cheating, diving, fake injuries, etc. is for Sky to follow their Ref Watch segment on a Monday with a Player Watch one. Embarrass them and also ask them and their managers at press conferences why they do it……
