Who handles pressure best wins

There is something inherently unfair about a knock-out cup game without visiting fans.  There is something inherently unfair about three Celtic goals being chopped-off in two games when VAR was unable to confirm one way or another.  However, this is the burden we carry.

Celtic were good enough to win both those away games despite an inadequate VAR, they now have to go to Ibrox and do the same without a single Celtic fan in attendance.  I believe this is more than possible.

The possibility of extra-time will complicate Martin O’Neill’s gameplan.  Tierney, Hogh, Forrest and Sorensen will not be asked to play 90 minutes, while Martin will almost certainly want to refresh the wingers, whoever starts there.  There is little room for tactical changes and little for those still working towards match fitness to start.

For me, Sunday’s game is all about pressure and how it is handled.  Celtic players appeared over-keen on Wednesday, diving into low-percentage challenges.  It will be easy to get pumped up at Ibrox and fall into this trap.

Pressure falls on both sides, though.  Five points ahead of their city rivals and with European competition, defeat on Sunday would be a bump on the road for Celtic.  It is unthinkable for Newco to have no European football, be so far behind Celtic and go out to them in the League Cup at home.  Try focussing that bundle of anxiety.

As a result we still have the following in terms of the relationship between fans and the club.

    – fan media banned while Nevin, English, Radio EBT, rags welcomed with open arms

    – broken relationship with the support bordering on hatred

    – NAP still in place with a 60/40 in favour of continuing

    On the business front

    – Ineffective Board and execs without the capability to progress club

    – no ambition

    – serial failure on CL qualification which has cost the club in excess of £200M

    – First team not at the level required and an injury away in key positions to having material impact

    – Dilipidated stadium

    – £80M cash with no clue what to do with it.

    – broken recruitment model to take team to next level

I fully expect us to have a narrow win tomorrow (assuming the VAR brethren behave themselves although Walsh has previous as well). A victory at CP a week tomorrow would result in championnees echoing round the ground as another treble would be odds on.

However so what ? As a club we have not progressed one millimetre ( I don’t expect any progress in Europe and was one of those who declined our EL packages as part of NAP).

Imagine being dependent on Wilson, Nicholson and McKay to take the club forward. They stumble along from week to week still finding it hard to believe nobody has noticed the scale of their damage to the club.

Linked (a wee bit) to Paul’s leader about ‘mindset’ there was an interesting read in the National this morning from a PHD doctor, former player at Celtic and now employed their in the background team. It basically covers how he tried, and initially failed, at Celtic then took up studying what makes for successful players coming through (and he now has a role in that area). Uses Colby Donovan as a recent success story, with revealing information about how young Colby goes about his work.

Waking up a Celt – aaahh. Feels good.

    Quad last night – cheers.

Martin’s motivation for mentioning the police visit?

    Honestly don’t know.

Martin’s response to the first serious question

(second question overall after the obligatory “how you feeling about …” soft lob intro)

… was to divert pointedly to the police visit

    At a guess?

The club is putting it out there as a marker of police diligence in some aspects while they are simultaneously negligent or lacking in others.

Or Martin is putting “Police” front and centre for this fixture on Sunday.

Alternatively, could be a fly old git simply throwing a curve ball to put people off balance … just because it is always useful to do so.

As pointed out by another CQNer earlier – a visit from police before this city derby is standard operating procedure.

8 out of 10 failures at CL do the business early get them newbies gelled and settled instated of buying 10 in one window and a whole host of loans just kicking the can done the road.

Root to branch required as I have said for years & still needed at our club untill then nothing changes even with now £80m in the bank and massive stadium footprint is still a concrete graveyard.

  22. SPIKEYSAULDMAN Strathclyde student union was a buzz in the early eighties. You’re not that old 😜 not that I didn’t go to gigs in Glasgow tech or even Glasgow uni. We marched to save the travel allowance, I was at the front carrying the main banner. We occupied the Tory headquarters in renfiejd street if I remember right, kicked them out until the news cameras came. Cops let us leave peacefully after we made our point. Travel allowance was retained in Scotland for one more year only. We didn’t win much. Fun when you are young. Life gives you lots of lessons after that and reality shapes opinions more than dogma. Can’t always be a student having fun.

  24. I’m a little surprised at the confidence level on here today. In our only proper away test so far this season we crumbled so I’m feeling a lot less confident going to that shite hole with no support. As I’ve got older I find these games unbearable and I hate every minute of them unless we’re 4 or 5 ahead.

Having hardly missed a game home or away during their 9 I got programmed to get beaten by them but with our more recent dominance bizarrely I find defeat much harder to take. I’ll be shitting myself at KO tomorrow. Can’t wait to get it over with.

  25. Glass half clapping furiously,

From the minutes of Collective meeting recently held. Re season ticket boycott never the plan, just discretionary spend. Hence why we decided No EL packages. There is no decision reached for this season however we will deny the club extra revenue no matter the outcome. We will still be at league games and hampden matches to celebrate. Plenty more are in this camp.

On defeatist attitude it starts from the top. Poor planning and no legs in midfield made the tie 50/50 ; on the night a tactical error at 4 nil up to shut the game down with the required substitutions and park the bus (what Rodgers did against Israeli team with Kolo & crew).

The only positive out of the shambles is that we seen that Maloney is not capable of making the big decisions. Am sure DD didn’t miss it or Ross for that matter. It cost the club £40M.

Yes, the “Northern Irishman” knows things in Glasgow are far from normal.

A punch to Captain Scott Brown, an assualt on Nic Kuhn in front of the linesman and many, many more – our players get a talking to, to make ones as bad as the other the normal.

Fergus would never allow it… if the games unsafe for our players to work in their normal way in that venue, close the venue…

By coincidence just finished reading the same article in The Herald. Not always a fan of Matt Lindsay, but good piece of writing, and an even better interview with Dr. Mark McGuigan and his thesis on player development @ Celtic FC. It addresses that age old question……how do we get there from here……answer…..you don’t.

With a background of being a youth player @ Celtic (booted out @ 16 for being too wee…..6’4″ @ 19), college football, then for a variety of clubs in Scotland, and his work at Lennoxtown under Ange and later Brendan, he kinda knows of which he speaks. Eg the Academies will only take you so far, agree on that one, and that even loans which dont work can still be useful, main point loanees still need to be managed away from the home club. Shim has struck it lucky there. Not sure if he is currently working with us, hope so, but if not get him back, or working with the SPL or the SFA. Knows a bit about the pathway to the pro game, needs listened to.
