Who is the liar here?

158

You can Read All About It in Scotland’s former top selling newspaper this morning. The SFA and SPL have told Bill Miller he’s welcome into the top league in the country and there will be no additional penalties added to the club. The Daily Record tells us:

“Miller has been given assurances by Scottish football’s governing bodies that even though his survival plan involves a newco, Rangers will not lose their place in the SPL or be hammered with additional penalties.

“Administrator David Whitehouse said: “It’s my belief that is one of the assurances he (Miller) has received.””

Three Twitter comments from BBC correspondent, James Cook, yesterday afternoon captured similar information from the men currently managing Rangers:

“The administrators say they understand Bill Miller has assurances that Rangers will continue in the SPL with no further points deductions.

“Administrators say they understand Rangers will retain all previous titles and continue in SPL with no points deductions.

“Rangers’ administrators say the taxman is supportive of Bill Miller’s deal. HMRC say they have agreed to nothing.”

Mr Cook’s third Tweet contained the inevitable rebuttal from HMRC to the notion put about by Duff and Phelps.

As we reported yesterday, the SFA and SPL have given absolutely no assurances to anyone about further penalties, points deductions, inquiries or the removal of trophies found to be won by cheating. Yesterday’s statements caused agitation as SFA and SPL executives sought to reassure stakeholders they were untrue.

The statements also caused distress among many football fans (who frankly should have known better) and brought the reputation of Scottish football into disrepute.

Allowing misleading comments to be issued on your behalf is unwise, especially if the SFA and SPL will soon have to decide a variety of punishments you will have to endure.

Let me spell this question out as clearly as possible:

WHO IS THE LIAR HERE?

Rangers have been banned from registering players for 12 months for failing to ensure the man who bought the club this time last year was Fit and Proper to own a football club.  Are the same club now going to ‘sell’ the assets, including league share, to Mr Miller when the veracity of his claims to the club’s administrators has been unequivocally contradicted by the SFA and SPL?

If a 12 month ban is not stern enough to ensure a club finds an inscrutable new owner perhaps it should be doubled. If the SFA capitulate in the face of this evidence and reduce Rangers player registration ban they would be as well removing the pretence and accepting There Are No Fit and Proper Persons Criteria in Scottish Football.

Rangers are committing the same offence in full sight of the SFA – and they don’t care who knows it.

  1. Lads i can understand were Ernie is coming from, he’s hurting like me and you he want’s our board to do something about it but instead they are sitting quiet.

If our board come out and make a statement then i will apologise.

  2. I just sit shaking my head in bewilderment at each new twist and turn of this chicanery. I am, however, in the midst of it all eternally grateful that it is all taking place now in the age of the internet. Can you imagine how quickly the Daily Record and co. would have had it all done and dusted 20 years ago?

  3. Our club is doing one of two things right now:

Working behind the scenes to try to stop blatant cheating and rewriting of the rulebook

    -or-

Doing nothing because it actually wants a newco in the SPL.

In the absence of any hard evidence of either option, it is down to each of us to determine which we believe based on our views of those who run our club.

Son of Warsaw. Had a look on BBC i Player on the Alba link and unfortunately last nights programme is not available at the moment.

I don’t know if it will be later on. If it is, the interview, which is in English not Gaelic, is during the half time interval.

  6. I have been a staunch critic of our bored over the recent period. With justification I have to say. But, these are tricky times. Whats going on over the road is, over the roads business. imo.

But, when the point of the brow-beating begins…..sign this deal….agree to this condition….go along with these TV conditions etc.

It’s at that point…’our’ bored have to grow a pair and, draw the line in the sand and, remember who they represent and who pays them!

Failure to do so would be, tantamout to selling the Celtic support down the river! imo.

Like all of us here, we want to make sure the rules are followed and rangers don’t get let off with all their cheating and tax dodging easily.

However, and a crucial point that has to be made, nothing has happened regarding Rangers Newco that has contravened any SPL/SFA rules. Until that happens, I can’t see what our club can say. Any suggestions?

At most I reckon all we could say is that we are monitoring the situation but thats likely to go down as badly among the support as saying nothing.

I really don’t see that Celtic have to do anything yet.

Bill Miller hasn’t even been to Scotland yet. It’s like me offering to buy something on Gumtree without even going to see it yet.

I can make a bid but once I see the goods I can still change my mind.

The man has never even visited this country. Even if he does decide to take the plunge and buy Rangers (IA) I can’t see any good times ahead for them.

Celtic will make their move when they have to and the Newco will be tangled in court appearances for the next few years.

No matter what happens IF they lose the big tax case for use of EBT’s I would hope Celtic would never give up chasing the SFA/SPL until all honours won with such EBT’s are stripped from Rangers (IA). Just because that particular team dies doesn’t mean justice shouldn’t be done.

Celtic will make their move when they have to. If they don’t they face the wrath of the Celtic support who are not thick by standers. We will make our point swiftly and get at the board to do something.

The Celtic board know what is at stake and can’t let the fans down. This will be as important to the club as the takeover in 1994. They can’t afford to get it wrong.

I have every faith that they won’t.

  10. Philbhoy - It's just the beginning! on

    Let me get this straight.

Miller hasn’t actually bought the huns.

He is the preferred bidder which means he can have a look at the books, talk to anyone he wants (sfa, spl, creditors) with regard to the huns.

If none wants to play to his rules, he walks away.

    Correct?

  11. The Comfortable Collective on

From the Herald article this morning.

“The transfer of the players’ registrations is a condition of Miller’s bid and it could blow up into a massive issue if one player, or more, decided to exploit his perceived right to leave without a fee.”

I thought the bid was UNCONDITIONAL.

  12. Hoopeddreams @ 11:21,

This has been my main concern, the major stumbling block to the NewCo FiasCo is the Whyte Knight.

However I’m not sure he has the wherewithal to defend his claims.

I’m keeping an eye on TicketUs they are the main players IMO.

Yes agreed, i was just thinking the same thing.

Nothing has happened yet so i suppose we may look rather foolish if we speak up.

  14. Wouldn’t it be great if somebody, some group, took out a two page spread in a couple of the more pragmatic and big UK Sunday Newspapers cataloguing the harm done to society by Rangers FC PLC (or whatever they are called) from a victims point of view; the victim being those who may have suffered needlessly and may have been deprived of basic human comfort and dignity, if not protection of life and a tommorow and maybe a sanity.

I’d pay towards the cost of that. I’d gladly pay towards the cost of that.

I’ll also be, without condition, or equivocation, or ultimatum, renewing my season tickets too.

Someday we have to stop the gloating and get objective; we have to stop focusing on them and their short-comings and start focusing on us, the reaffirmation of our ethos, the objective evaluation of our ambitions and our determination not to commit moral suicide by strangling our club.

Apart from the football side of things, we are a family, we try to help people. A lot of people would be hopeless and possibly crushed in despair today if it was not for the intervention of the Celtic Supporters.

We are not, as a family, a social panacea for any ill, but we are as individuals and collective willing helpers to ease and comfort where, and when, and as, we can.

Where did Belfast Celtic go? Has anybody seen my old friend Bobby?

I don’t know… but I believe their spirit and courage crossed the water and is now resident in the east end of Glasgow alongside a host of generation gone of Scottish kin . I don’t live in the east end of Glasgow but when it comes my time to meet my maker I’ll beseech a stay of eviction for a few days at least so my soul too will know what it is like to keep company with courage of person and conviction.

Everybody to their own… I’m renewing, regardless of hun on mason.

I don’t think it’s as simple as that. I’d suggest a third option:

Trying hard to stop it, but not prepared to go to the extreme lengths it would take to ensure that it was definitely stopped.

It’s only fair to the Board that we leave them in no doubt as to the consequences if the move isn’t stopped. Keeping quiet, not rocking the boat, toeing the line, maintaining a united disciplined front etc etc seves only those who wish to see a newco in the SPL.

  17. hen1rik

That’s my fear. If we do say anything now, we will be cast as major villains, even our existence is enough to annoy many, this would just throw them overboard and take the attention away from Rangers shennanigans.

Let them try what they are doing and if rules are broken or bent to accommodate newco, then that is the time to speak up “without fear or favour” as some have said in the past.

  20. Regarding TUPE: one of the most common misconceptions is that individuals can be bought and sold like assets. The legislation exists for the protection of the individual. When an undertaking transfers to a new employer that employer is obliged to offer he same terms to employees whotransfer. The employees, in this case the players are under no obligation to transfer.

  22. Reading through my Season Ticket renewal this morning. Does the option of STs with opt outs for the taxdodgers games mean that our Board are resigned to/party to a Newco in SPL?

I’ve made that point several times.

The logic is ineluctable. If the SPL needs the huns, it needs a strong huns. Moreover once the SPL concedes that it needs the huns to ensure its own survival it’s handed a loaded gun to the huns and enables them to dictate the terms on which they will take part in the SPL.
