Who we are and our values

1097

For some months now, a CQN’er and academic has prepared a project to identify who we, the Celtic support, are in 2014, what our views are, where we come from and how closely our objectives align with the Club.

The project takes the form of a questionnaire, which asks some personal questions, like your political leanings, intentions for the Referendum, faith, education and ethnic heritage.  No sign-up is involved and no identifying information is available.

There are also questions on the Offensive Behaviour Act, as well as the Club’s response to Resolution 12, The Green Brigade and the Living Wage.

The objective is to determine why you support Celtic and whether these reasons are being recognised and served.

I know Celtic have held similar surveys in the past but I’m not aware of a recent academic survey into these questions.  The survey will close on Friday 26th September and results will be reported thereafter.

As with all surveys, the more people who participate the more reflective the results will be, so please 10 minutes to get involved.  You’ll find the survey here.

If you have any questions for the author in relation to the survey please email cqn.survey@orange.fr

Thanks.

Pertaining to the above are allegations made about Aleks Tonev over the weekend.

It’s difficult to see where this one goes if the player says “I didn’t say that” without corroboration either way.  Despite this, the allegation is damaging to Celtic, and to the player, so an internal and public reaction is needed to reiterate the values of the club.

Celtic’s induction process should be clear what is and is not acceptable.

  1. Seriously, how thorough can this police investigation be?

    “Did you say something naughty?”

    “Naw.”

My daughter isn’t as old as she gives it much thought. My wife, coming from parents who both had life-long and successful careers in the NHS, one in the Ambulance service and the other a nurse/midwife, is absolutely dead against the abolition of the Service.

She does though, as I do, think it is inevitable eventually, as the state (be it as a United Kingdom or otherwise) will be increasingly unable to support it in its present state.

    40+ years

Plenty of time to build up a substantial fund while we grow our natural resource production.

think Norway’s has been built up in 19 years.

So I think we as a country will survive with

An enhanced fishing policy held back by WM.

Billion pound Whisky industry (I do believe no other coountry can match this).

Keepin all the tax\national insurance\VAT raised here and distributing across the required services rather than sending off to be returned with a deficit.

    A healthy farming industry.

A thriving financial services industry (oh I know they are all going to fly away)

Saving from our share of Trident replacement and maintenance.

Saving from share of £105m MP expenses claims.

No more future miss regulation eff ups of financial industry created by WM failed policy and regulation doubling national overnight.

    A health tourist industry.

i think as a country we will survive and survive well.

You obviously trust your WM corruption.

After Thursday it’ll go one way ot the other, although hearing Goerge Robertson speak about legal process if there is a Yes vote I worry that acceptance will not be as simple as we are lead to believe.

  4. davidopoulos – in an independent Scotland, everybody will be forced to dress in quasi-futuristic 1970’s leisure suits, and everybody over the age of 30 will be sent to Carousel and destroyed.

Under Devo Max the right of Primae Noctis shall be reinstated and all babies will be born with the kind blue eyes of David Cameron. (thumbsup)

  5. I have completed the survey as requested

However may I ask as to what other mediums the survey is being conducted in. If the survey is being exclusively being participated in by contributors to a football blog the results of same cannot be interpreted as being those held by the Celtic support in general.

I cannot find any links directing me to the survey other than from the original header article

I haven’t a clue as to what the sheepies were singing on Saturday but from my position in the Stadium they out sang and out shouted the large Celtic support

I don’t know what vile and bitter insults are directed at the Celtic Support from the the supporters of other clubs because of the numbers they turn up in,makes it difficult to hear what they are actually singing

Did you see the report quoting official projections that show HS2 will remove £316M per year from the economies of Aberdeen and Dundee? £160M going to Crossrail, how does that benefit anywhere other than the SE? We’re told these projects in the South will bring nationwide benefits. They aren’t

    ===========================

Under the process I refer to there would be a visible indicator of nationwide benefits established before the decision to switch was made.

That very exercise concentrates minds and looks at the underlying assumptions that back the claim you say is untrue. If it fails such scrutiny the project would be replaced by one that does produce those benefits or ensures the disbenefits are compensated for by other investment.

First you define what is meant by a fairer society so that we all know what goal the effort is trying to achieve.

Then you identify the various ways it can be achieved and in doing so identify the risks and what steps need to ne taken to reduce them and increase the chance of the goal being achieved.

Then you set out the activities needed to make it happen including those that minimise the risk of failing to meet the goal.

It is a rigorous but well tried and tested process BEFORE a project gets the go ahead.

In fact the very exercise itself would bring folk together because the would always be testing their thinking against how it contributes to the goal.

We are being asked to approve a life changing project with no definition of the ultimate aim and how we will know if it is being achieved or even achievable, on the equivalent of a back of a fag packet set of promises that do not take account of the risks (scaremongering if you are Yes voter) and vote for something that risks producing the opposite of a fairer society, assuming we all agree on what that will look like once it arrives.

I’m for at-one-ment , that imo should be the goal of any society first and foremost, for a house divided against itself cannot stand is the wisdom of the ages. We ignore it and we face the consequences.

We accept it and work towards it removing the ideas and beliefs that separate us on the way and a fairer society will be the assured consequence.

We as a joined up or separate nation are a long way off from this mature rational approach to running the country, we prefer the politics of separation. which produces more of the same.

With a bit of luck in 100 years after we finally buy into at-one-ment our successors will look back at this time as when we finally got the message.

Sadly one cannot compare Norway with Scotland. Norway banks the majority of profit from oil production in it’s terrotorial waters. It’s oil industry is set up to benifit the people of Norway. Scotland would only receive tax revenue from the profits of oil production. A sizable difference. Again a sad fact is that Scotland does not own the oil the oil companies do sold off to the highest biddrs. Now Jim Sillars’ approach would be the ethical thing to do however Scotland needs to operate in a European / world market and regardless of the amount of potential wealth the fledgling state may have it will not be able to take on the political and financial might of the multinational oil companies and their ability to pressure to their respective governments to deal with the Bolshie Scots with trade embargos and the like.

Strange survey. Although I completed it I wasn’t sure I should. It seemed poorly written and the questions were limited and could be used to create the idea that we have similar ideas when we don’t.

Joking aside, the male/female and race questions were like something from the past. If I had a child they wouldn’t know whether to put white or latino. The question about where we were born is weird. How is that relevant?

    Anyway, big day on Thursday.

Brian Wilson writes for the Record

YESTERDAY’S flag-waving demonstration outside BBC Scotland’s headquarters was intended to intimidate journalists in the final days of the referendum campaign.

Instead, it should send an urgent message to the wider Scottish public. This is intolerance of a kind that has never been part of Scottish society – and which we invite in at our peril.

There is not a shred of evidence that the BBC’s political editor, Nick Robinson, was doing anything more than his job in pressing Alex Salmond for a straight answer on the question – where would Scottish banks pay their taxes after they moved headquarters to England?

In fact, the editing of the resultant news item could have been a lot less kind to the Nationalists if it had included the heckling of Robinson by Salmond’s henchmen – a most unusual and disturbing occurrence at a press conference.

Neither is there anyone outside their own paranoid circles who thinks Jackie Bird is other than an able and professional news presenter and interviewer. Yet both these individuals find themselves pilloried by a Nationalist mob.

There is nobody in public life who has not felt aggrieved at the way their comments were reported. But I have never before, in Scotland, seen banners calling them “liars” and demanding their removal. It is sheer intimidation.

Make no mistake, the same mob would demand the same obedience from a Scottish Broadcasting Service – and would have even less respect for the integrity of public service journalism then than was displayed at Pacific Quay.

The BBC is one of the great institutions we risk turning our backs on if Scotland votes to separate from the UK. For the Nationalists that would be a triumph. For the rest of us, it would be a massive loss.

Not only would an exclusively Scottish Broadcasting Service face a constant challenge to its editorial independence, of the kind seen on Sunday, but we would have no claim over the great BBC services which our licence fees help to fund.

Sure, we could pay to watch BBC on satellite or cable and we could eavesdrop on Radio 1, but they would no longer be ours to share in. It is a dismal prospect, made worse by the evidence of what we witnessed on Sunday.

It is another powerful reason to say “no thanks” to the inward-looking, intolerant Scotland that Nationalism offers where journalists think it safer not to ask hard questions, just as so many others already think it best to stay silent.

There’s another serious point. We are now talking about nasty demonstrations and the implications for broadcasting.

Meawhile, Alex Salmond still hasn’t given a straight answer to the question Nick Robinson tried to persist with. It’s called diversionary tactics.

Brian Wilson is a former Labour MP, cabinet minister and journalist. He is the founder of the West Highland Free Press.
