The World Cup is for the retailers, broadcasters, the hospitality industry, factories in China that make polyester flags, and T-shirt factories in Bangladesh. Together, they do a brilliant job at engaging non-core football fans in the game, but if you are reading CQN on a scorching close-season day, there is nothing non-core about you.
Football is successful because it aligns people to a tribe. In countries without a mature domestic game, the national team take precedence, but here? We are a nation of clubs and if your affinity to your tribe is strong enough, it cannot really switch to another shirt for a few weeks in the summer. No harm to the “Doe and deer” crowd, but they are not serious football fans.

I would suggest that the last world class footballer produced in Scotland was Gordon Strachan – and that’s a hell of a long time ago.

Nor the fact that the refs here allow a lot more ‘robust’ play. Radical change required for Scotland to produce better players. Anyway, I’ll be glad if KT and Tony are back sooner than expected (by some). It does look that Scotland have quite a good chance of staying in, which is quite ludicrous.

For me this, while certainly an arguable point, is more of a Scottish thing.
Especially an old firm thing.
In England many supporters groups will take their large St George flag with their club’s name on it.

Following on from my previous comment about current Celtic players being picked for Scotland, of the (only) five in our squads for the cup final and SPL decider well aren’t either to old for or have retired from international football (Tierney, Ralston, McCowan, Murray and Doohan), McCowan is the only one with more than 23 top flight league appearances not to feature in the Scotland WC squad.

At the turn of the century the clamour for football academies on the back of successful clubs like Barca, Ajax etc was ubiquitious, many examples of what a boon that can be to a country’s football.
