Why Brendan will get what he wants

468

Brendan Rodgers is a master of what to say and what not to say.  Blame, well, “I can’t fault the players”.  So not the players then.  He adds, “However, if you want to progress, then, as I said, you need to bring in quality.”  Is that pointing the finger of blame?  There’s plausible deniability; I’m sure if asked directly, Brendan would wax lyrical about the support he received from Dermot and Michael, but plausible deniability does not cut through publicly in football.  You, me and Brendan know that.

Martin O’Neill made it clear at an AGM 20-something years ago.  With Dermot Desmond sitting a few seats along from him, he explained that it was not his job to worry about development, finances or sustainability.  His job, as he saw it, was to campaign for better players.  It was up to the board to hold their line and worry about what they needed to worry about.  Martin was always charmingly frank.

The upshot for today is a degree of urgency which means the manager will inevitably get what he wants, just like last summer, when we spent £26m on Idah, Engels and Trusty.  Celtic have the money to back Brendan like this again, I fully expect they will.

Seven days to go folks. Anyone still confident?

Looking like we’ll be playing St Mirren with significantly weaker team than last season. I’m shocked 😲

  2. timmy7_noted on

I’m generally always up for the first game of the season. First trip to the Drover to check out the new owner and back to Celtic Park. However if the result doesn’t go our way the atmosphere will be toxic.

“We will be getting our two wingers, probably, this week.”

    %

Rodgers dizny know how to utilise wingers once the opposition wises up, and doubles up the defensive players onto our wingers, not allowing crosses, low-block, forcing our wingers to start playing back the way before they even get to the byline.

Its NOT the wingers fault that the managers playing system has been sussed out, its the managers fault.

Wingers and their pace have to be used playing on the break as an out ball, but Celtic managers are caught up in this[mindset trap] that all wingers should be able to play like Jinky, dribbling past 4, or, 5 players which hasn’t been seen since the days of, Jinky.

How much ££££’s has Rodgers blown on wingers that he does not know how to utilise because he is a One trick pony, making wingers run about with their found out Khun faces on?

Big Idah has been driven to drink by Rodgers insistence on a load of airy fairy pish that has made Idah develop a Khun tripping face as well!

That is Rodgers fault, NOT big handsome Idah’s, who scored a SCF winning goal vs the Huns 2 years ago because Bernardo went off sript and grabbed the ball and ran forward, not boring as fck sideways, and took our first shot at goals in the 90+ minutes which Hun gk deflected out to Idah for his tap in winner.

Agent Rodgers and the PLC board must have been raging, play pish and let Huns get a trophy through penalty kicks plan, up in smoke because of the Bernardo and Idah traitors to the Old Firm bung the Huns a trophy plan. lol

  9. Great Lions game at the rugby. Delighted the Aussies turned up. Would have loved them to take it to a third game decider in a funny way.

Big rearguard effort needed from the transitional Indian team now. If they could bat through until tea tomorrow it could be interesting and character forming. but a lot of work to do. Englands variety and developing ruthlessness should be the difference though. The series has been a great advert for test cricket just as today’s Lions Wallaby game was for rugby.

Hope we see some green shoots tonight from Celtic.

  10. Said a day or so ago, there is something seriously wrong at Celtic.

I can see Brendan go at the end of the season to be replaced by Broony, now wouldn’t that be typical.

To my mind, BR has done absolutely nothing wrong, nothing.

Regard stadium improvement, its just common sense to make it the best it xan be. No matter how far technology goes there will always have to have a human presence so a ticket office is essential.

Folk saying we are significantly weaker than end of last season are catastrophic in their thinking. We have lost khun who was very good at the beginning of last season from wide and jota sadly to injury. Kayogo was not close to his best last season and left before it ended albeit his movement was still very good.

KT has improved the team and we have added an attacking midfielder who looks tha part to. I think we lacked that last season. Given our current playing group i think a 4231 formation would be best. We do need to ign up some key players to improve us. I expect it will happen hopefully before the season start. It’s the time of transfers that annoys me rather than lack of them.

Interesting chat around the £26m trio.

Personally I am glad Arne, Adam and Auston are in our squad – good players.

This trio made a significant contribution to our successful outcomes last season.

Equally fair to say “so did others”.

Maeda, Kuhn and Hatate made a significant contribution to our successful outcomes last season.

In an ideal world we’d get where we need to get to buying a trio costing £6m trather than one costing £26m .

But the increasingly globalised football transfer industry does not operate in an ideal world.

In fact, it operates in a world of sharks, cheats, liars, pimps, hustlers and chancers.

IMHO, Celtic navigate these waters pretty well

(Always room for improvement of course)

Your post and (perfectly reasonable) countdown to domestic season start noted with interest.

Football season readiness is no longer binary.

The disgrace that is the international football calendar, and the physical stress that puts on players, has seen to that.

To mitigate this, Brendan has spoken about the need for a rotational approach to resting players, moving away from the traditional “tool up for 10 months, down tools for 2 months” convention.

With Brendan’s views in mind I see us having to hit three levels of readiness.

    To answer your question …

Yes, I’m very confident the squad in its current composition and readiness can beat St Mirren.

Extending slightly, I’m reasonably confident the squad in it’s current composition and readiness can get us through the CL Play-offs across 19-27 August.

As for the squad in it’s current composition and readiness being good enough to make us competitive in the Champions League proper from 16 September?

    I think we’re a good bit short.

Interestingly, we signed Arne and Auston on the same day last season, 30 August.

I suspect we’ll get 2 wingers in for the play-offs.

If we qualify? We might spend eight figures on someone before the window closes.

  21. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

In my above post perhaps should have added

… when it comes to how I feel about CL PO across 19 to 27 August.

My reasonable confidence is predicated on an assumed back four of AJ, CCV, Auston and KT.

    Time will tell.

Rodgers Mitchell getting a platform to dig up celtic supporters about politics in football and 2 sides to an argument. Rodgers there is a genocide going on in gaza right now, not a war a genocide. children, woman and men being starved to death, targetted indiscriminately killed in their 10 and likely hindereds of thousands. The displacement of palastine people at the hands of Israel has jack to do with iran, its a greater Israel plan and has been set in motion for decades. Even now israel settlers are breaching international law in the west bank aided and abeted by the israel government.

As for your use of the media to spout political shite about Israel’s right to exist, really, you tell us all not to get involved in politics only to then spout your views. My view, i think the people of Israel should be allowed to exist on the land but not as a genocidal ethno-sepremicist state that operates an open air prison based on ethnic identity and targets civilians. I think jew, Muslim and Christian etc should all be free from the river to the see, because that means everyone is treated as an equal with equal rights.

Rodgers is using his right and platform to express his view about celtic about the wider political affairs in west asia but he has an issue with football supporters and students and i suppose anyone else etc exercising those same rights because he disagrees with them. hypocrite much!!! That’s the problem with the establishment, media and political elite, they are OK with free speech so long as they don’t need to listen to other people with differing views.

As an aside, the land where Israel sits was given to them by the british who gave a people without land, land without people, only problem being there was people on that land just not the white western folk. Large public gathering have always been used to demonstrate and challenge unjustice.
