Why this is the finest Celtic team in 47 years

751

You and I have seen some special Celtic teams. For me, the double winning team in 1977, the Centenary team and, of course, the Martin O’Neill team, were without doubt above anything we’ve had since the 60s.

I am in no way disparaging Gordon Strachan’s remarkable achievement of twice reaching the knock out stages of the Champions League. This was down to Gordon’s superior ability as a manager; the wee man didn’t have a squad to compare to the others on the list.

By contrast, this team, in its embryonic state, finished fourth in the Champions League group, but that was then. Now, they are within touching distance of winning an undefeated treble. This is the finest Celtic team I’ve seen.

SPFL_PTFC_CELTIC_0456_1

The ’77 team wasn’t so much a team as a support act for Kenny Dalglish. A season later, without King Kenny, they finished fifth, without even a Uefa Cup spot as compensation.

It was sheer force of Billy McNeill’s personality which drove the Centenary team on, but they returned for preseason without their elixir.

It was like going to school watching Martin O’Neill’s team. We learned so much about the game that we’d never seen at Celtic. This was a guy who knew how to get results. But without another King, we discovered that team too was built on a single foundation.

There are no Kings in this Celtic team. They are a team in the true sense of the word. Last night, without Dembele, Armstrong, Tierney, Lustig, Simunovic and Sinclair they rolled around the Firhill surface like a machine from the 22nd century.

It was breathtaking. This is the greatest Celtic team since the one which walked off the Hampden pitch in front of 136,000 fans in 1970.

I saw a preview of the BBC documentary film, Glasgow 1967: The Lisbon Lions, which airs across the UK on Wednesday 24th May. It was heartfelt, entertaining and inspiring. I intended to review it today, but I was so annoyed at the coverage some in the media gave it, I thought I better step back to do the job justice.

They had some of the Lions, of course, and some wives too, but they sat a microphone in front of a few of our more experienced CQN’ers Some of the best things you have read on this site come to life on the screen. We’ll talk about it again next week.

Stunned and humbled at the support for the marathon, which takes place on Sunday morning, to benefit the Celtic Foundation. I just don’t know what to say. There are spectacular donations (here) there – a simple thank you does not seem appropriate, but I know every donation, large or small, means someone has taken the trouble to spend hard earned money.

It is appreciated, thank you.

If you’d like to get an historic week off to a unique start I hear there’s a projector screening of the original live broadcast and whole 90 minutes from Lisbon in a Govan warehouse tonight (Friday, 19th), it’ll run from around 6.30 till 9. If interested drop an email to cqnopen@gmail.com

That’s very sad but very poignant too that Francis/The Barca Mole’s funeral will take place on 25th May.

Half a century after his club, our club won the European Cup.

With God’s grace I’ll think of him and all departed Celts when I’m in that stadium.

Circumstances at the time prevented me from being in Lisbon and miles on the clock have the same effect now.

Nevertheless, I vividly recall that great day and ,although hazier, the days that followed.

There is no question that everyone who travels ext week will have a ball and will do so in realisation that they are retracing the steps of football pioneers.

No clubs’ supporters had done that before, as no British cub had done it before either.

Good luck and safe travels to you Latter Day Lions and don’t forget the Kleenex.

As I said this morning, I’m definitely cheering you on. If you win the league then Cumbernaulds fate will be in their own hands. Cumbernauld have Rutherglen at home on Monday, no doubt a tough game, on Wed the play already relegated Blantyre at home.

If Girvan win on Monday then 4 points from 6 would see Cumbernauld safe.

    Hail Hail.

  7. This season has been the most enjoyable season to watch since the MON early years and before that the Centenary season. I could have included the stopping 10-in-row season but that season was so thwart with nerves, although a fantastic season and enjoyable result to it, it was not enjoyable throughout but always laced with fear of a horrible ending.

I don’t think though I have has that butterfly feeling in my gut for any game up until today. The cusp that our clubs stands on today will hopefully see Brendan and the team/squad woven into the fabric of top success’s at our club with an invincible league and LC season and hopefully an invincible domestic season next Saturday.

I am confident of victories tomorrow and next Saturday but for some reason I have the flies of butter in my belly.

I’m just going to put it down to excited anticipation.

    HAIL! HAIL!

Stopping the Bank of Scotland sponsored ten was also magical, although surely the previous 9 is done (apologies for the reference to the cheats)

This season watching from a distance has been excellent, next season, who knows, maybe even more special BUT for me in my teenage haze 87/88 was blinking amazing :-)

    Definitely ebjoying our Brendan…..

By the way wee Joe’s winner in ’89 to stop some mob winning a treble was also magical :-)

We had to hide in a wee corner shop from marauding Huns, still not sure why 3 of us thought it would be a good idea to walk back into city centre from Hampden, young foolish and not a brain cell between us but we were still happy :-)

Was telling my wife about the good old days when the fans could change ends at half time.

Disappointed to see fans segregated at this level of football.

The Kevin McKenna article is just so fantastic.

I want to add another inspiring story for you tonight.

4 weeks ago my business needed immediate help. I had no time to go through a candidate selection programme. Via Gumtree, I found 6 people who had posted that they were available for work. I sent out a contact to them and a young lady replied quickly. We spoke and she sounded fine so I told her to start the following Tuesday as she had a university exam on the Monday. She immediately settled in and has been a great worker and part of the team.

Now, here’s the bit I want to tell you.

Our office is in central Glasgow. My staff have been telling me that, when she goes out for lunch, she sees an unfortunate man sitting near a lane and buys him a lunch each day. On Friday, i was told that she found out that this man can get accommodation for £25 but only had £18. She lifted £10 and gave it to him to get shelter for the night.

    Guess what team she supports.

The future of the Celtic spirit is in good hands with the next generation of our supporters.

  16. I had hoped with the kit celebrating the Lions that the keepers main kit would have been the Green top and white shorts as worn by Ronnie Simpson and TOHG John Fallon on that beautiful day.

We have the coal lorry sorted, the boy said it will take him all week to clean! It’s 50 years to the day since the Lions were last on a coal lorry and we will have them sitting on it with the Big Cup with YOU in the middle. What a photograph that will be!

The tickets are selling fast, so get yours at cqnbookstore.com

The band who played at the Kerrydale last night are playing and we also have a Celtic Cabaret.

The stunning Celtic in Art Exhibition is coming and lots more.

I am looking for a taxi driver who can work for us on Friday, collecting then dropping off home some of the wives of Lions who want to be there too.

We already have on taxi driver picking up 4 Lions and doing the same thing and we simply agreed to pay his normal Friday wages.

If any taxi drivers are reading this and fancy this very special task please drop me an email to david@cqnpublishing.co.uk
