Why we might need a pool of 7 wingers

365

News from Korea today suggests we have agreed the transfer of Yang Hyun-jun from Gangwon.  The player turned 21 two days before our last league game of the season against Aberdeen.  Gangwon have won only two of their 22 league games and sit well adrift of safety in the relegation zone.

He is young and playing for a side who are surely the polar opposite of Celtic – always defending instead of always attacking.  The journey to Europe, to Celtic Park, potentially Champions League nights and the ever-present need to win, need to always be productive, will take a while to adjust to.

A fee of around £2.5m is a huge amount for a Gangwon, so we can assume this lad has metrics which place him in the upper echelon of potential superstars.  Whether that potential is realised will depend on how well Brendan Rodgers and his coaches develop him.  We should expect little in his first season.

Yet another winger!  He joins Daizen Maeda, Liel Abada, Marco Tilio, Sead Haksabanovic and James Forrest, while Mikey Johnston’s injury almost certainly precludes him from leaving on loan this summer.  That makes seven fighting for two starting places.

That sounds a lot, but as my brother pointed out to me this morning, since the five subs rule came in, we change at least one winger and often both in each game, so any four have a realistic chance of gametime each matchday.

With two injured (as there are at the moment), that’s four from five, so maybe we are not overloaded on the wings (pardon the pun) afer all.

  1. Agree with Tommy we need real quality first team players signed or that team the now will get absolutely annihilated in Europe and the league will be a struggle

  2. Dearie me

Before a ball is kicked in a competition.

    Struggle in the league.

    Evidence ?

  3. If it’s first team starters we need its most likely Brendan will want full say in who they are and he’ll most likely have ideas of his own

The guys we’ve signed have been in the works for a while.

Unlike with the Koreans and the Australian you would think if they are first team ready we won’t be the only club who is seriously interested

If it takes until the last few days for us to get another Jota and CCV it will have been worth the wait. Time is on our side, we’re in the unusual position of being able to wait.

  4. Catching up with TV recording s. Paul on the nine with Amy irons. Interesting take.

  5. BADA BING,

Tete is really exciting. Would love this one to come off.

If Tom Rogic and Odsonne Edouard had a baby and he grew up to be a pro footballer, that’s Tete.

How does re- signing some of your best players fit the ‘we’re weaker’ narrative?

The way I see it is, we’ve signed six players so far and will sign at least one ‘marquee’ player, probably as Bada Bing tipped whilst we’re in Japan.

You can tell by the amount SMSM Bosman FC bullshit

  9. would prefer we added 2 or 3 quality first team starters to add to our team than 4 or 5 development potential squad players.

  10. Heard the Mayo Gaelic football team , who haven’t won an All Ireland title in over seventy year, have also acquired a new Korean manager, the highly regarded WinSamSoon.

  11. I love the look of both Koreans – the big midfielder looks strong, technical, likes a tackle, likes to burst forward and can pass and link. Winger looks pacey and tricky.

Rodgers in previous 2 interviews has mentioned power and strength is needed . Looking for CB, LB and Striker – experienced at high level.

Beginning to worry we’re bloating our squad with £2M projects. Also worried about the level of injuries we’re starting our season with. The huns are 💩 but are bringing in experienced journeymen. I hope we’re not risking here and now quality on the pitch for longer term economic returns. Losing Jota and Mooy plus injuries means we’ll start the season materially weaker. I hope there’s a bit more Ange-era ambition to come before then and this isn’t a retrenchment into ‘stay one baw hair ahead of them’ aka our old mucker Pedro. And hopefully by the end of the window we will have a slim downed squad with an accent on quality rather than quantity. Duds like Ajeti, Soro, and McCarthy need to go. It’s not worked out for Shaw, Scales and Urroghide. Stephen Welsh deserves first time football at a good level.

  13. Like most I don’t know anything about Korean football but there are some very good Korean players in the EPL. I imagine Rodgers knows what he is doing in that market.

Rumour, Brazilian winger Tete is signing

When is Brendan gonnae start moaning that we’ve got Schved loads of wingers already?

  15. aye, i am happy,

i see nothing yet to fear we wont win the league,

coompeting in europe, we could sign kane, tierney and mctominay, we still wouldnt make a dent in it.

i trust the manager, the manager trusts the process,

    stop whinging.

  16. I can never judge who is an oven ready first team starter and who is a project until I see them playing for us.

How is the track record of others on this metric?

Did anyone rejoice that Al Johnston was first team ready?

Or CCV who was a failure at Spurs?

    Starfelt?

    Maeda?

    O’Riley?

    Hatate?

So why not the Koreans, or the Aussie being able to do what these guys achieved?

Why not a B team layer having a breakthrough season?

Why not last year’s signings having an even better year with this year on the back of the development they gained last year?

  17. dont think Rodgers will complain about the number of wingers – as long as he has a say in who and when we bring. Sved clearly not signed on his authority – board/PL playing football manager games

Don’t tell Scott Arfield but I suspect ex sevco players Kenny Miller and might have participated in a huddle after leaving the Huns. Might even have been wearing Celtic tops at the time.

Thanks for the reply. I had thought you were taking a different view. My mistake.

Too many expecting instant gratification / oven ready signings.

I would have thought the same so called Celtic supporting clowns who derided Ange at the start and thought Canadian right backs, or Japanese strikers, or ex St Mirren Aussies, or Starfelt, or MK dons players, or JJ or GG would have learned a bit about the way football works. Or at least learned a bit of humility……. But no the bed wetting has started because the Daily Record or STV is telling them. Rangers are signing and Celtic are not.

Rangers have to sign or the won’t even have a team. Celtic don’t but yet we are doing so. Still we have folks on here who know better of course. They know what Brendan is or isn’t doing.

  21. SFA apologise to “ Rangers” for Celtic winning a lot of trophies lately.” An utter disgrace” said one unnamed source.

  22. burnley – are you saying its not ok for celtic fans to have an opinion on who we should sign and the type of player we should go for? isn’t that the beauty of the game – if we all managed Celtic we would have different ideas – just like ALL actual previous managers.

Or is it that they just dont all agree with you? let it go and appreciate everyones perspective and view of they game.

  23. Why all the negativity about European football. ?

The huns were within a kick of winning a European trophy.

    And we’re better than them.

Rodgers wont crack europe in 1 year
