Wigan first to drop in football’s great structural change

Wigan Athletic yesterday were the first to fall into administration in the world’s most financially vulnerable league, the English Championship.  They were mid-table and on a winning streak, so if they can find the money to complete their remaining games, there is a chance they will avoid relegation, despite the points deduction.

With former owner, Dave Whelan, still alive and still rich, they are probably better placed to recover from this than most in the Championship, but I doubt Dave is prepared to cover years of contracted losses to fill the bank accounts of players.

If the great structural change in football that Celtic fans have been waiting on for decades does not happen in the months to come, it never will.

Most players in the English Football League have had their wages deferred, while some have been furloughed.  Taxes have also been deferred, so the crunch lies ahead.

I am not a Mike Ashley fan but the manner in which he trolled yesterday Newco was spectacular.  Sports Direct’s Facebook page announced Newco strips would be available exclusively from the retailer they continually believe they were rid of.  The club statement that followed was an excruciating attempt to confirm nothing while not contradicting a word of the Sports Direct statement.

  3. For those interested in the detail of today’s SPFL ruling …

Lord Clark’s Note of reasons in Heart of Midlothian and Partick Thistle Football Clubs for orders in respect of the SPFL Ltd has now been published on the SCTS website

JD free P&P, Celtic Superstore £4.99 P&P. I was opting for JD but they did not have my size in the green tracky top (£55) forced to go with Superstore. I would have thought Superstore would have given free P&P…another own goal in my opinion.

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

  5. Postage from Celtic Store is free if you spend in excess of £70. I bought one item at £25 and was then charged £4.99 for shipping. 😳

  6. Gene,

    from Celtic store:

    UK Delivery Options

Free standard delivery on orders over £70.

    Standard UK delivery – £4.99.

Standard UK delivery is a 2-3 day service after leaving our warehouse.

I wouldn’t have qualified for free delivery being at £70. I am basically 1p down on the deal. Having gone to school in Paisley that really hurts. 😉😂

Lennybhoy- a % off for ST Holders, to offset the watch at home stuff maybe?

  8. Lennybhoy

It’s free on orders over £70 – you should have bought 2 🤭

How can they have no stock on advanced orders 🤔

Somebody needs to tell big Fraser there is only so much money that any one person needs, and he will have enough money in the bank by now that he could live comfortably for the rest of his life – without doing another days work. So why the heck does he want even more money? Kids inheritance?

I honestly thought big Fraser was more interested in his football career than in his bank balance. its looking like he would rather sit about waiting on a chance to play – whilst his bank balance (OK Investment Portfolio) goes thru the roof – rather than actually playing for us. What on earth is he thinking about I wonder,

He is such a key figure in the quest for 10, a definite setback if we don’t get him.

I’m sure his agent is heavily involved – they need to make sure they’re getting their pound of flesh.

Below is a wee story on the Southampton website. How many goalies do they need?

Don’t give up on FF yet.

Josh Sims has returned to Southampton following his latest loan spell with New York Red Bulls.

The Academy graduate, 23, made eight appearances for the MLS club in the 2019 season, scoring once, before rejoining the club for the start of the 2020 campaign.

Sims came on as a substitute in the Red Bulls’ first two matches of the season in March, before the league entered a lengthy suspension due to COVID-19.

The winger will now return to England, but remains ineligible for Saints for the remainder of 2019/20.

His picture on Southhampton website showed him wearing gloves and I stupidly assumed he was a goalkeeper. My apoligies to everyone.

Apparently it was the same with Dalglish when he saw a picture of Rafael Scheidt wearing football boots 🤭

Lord Clark lived 2 doors down from me in Balornock East. Good working class stock. A great family. They must be very proud of him.

  15. Saw comment in Southampton Echo from a saints fan. He said he was worried when Fraser F dropped his pen when signing for them.

Great tribute to the Lions, not least because of Bob Kelly’s idea to make a film of that season.

An emotional watch, in that the emotions are for the very same reason, both sad and glad.

It’s a day I’ll never forget – telly broke so watched it round my uncle’s.

  26. Fraser wants a permanent contract at Celtic – that’s fair enough. He deserves the security.

He’s also reportedly on a huge wage and no doubt wants a partial pay out from Southampton to make up for the big fall in salary he will take when he joins us.

I think this deal will happen if we’re patient.

  27. Gene – I watched it live at my mums, I was 6 months old. 😂
