Win over HJK worth at least £6m to Celtic

1408

Celtic will receive £1.65m from the Uefa revenue distribution system for participating in the Champions League play-off round against Helsingborgs.  Add to that around £1m gate money and the guarantee of at least three Europa League games, with Uefa distribution money, you can calculate the value of Wednesday’s win over HJK Helsinki as no less than £6m (all figures are net of vat).  Quite a prize for one game.

Compare this to the projected income from newco The Rangers, who claimed to have sold 25,000 season tickets.  If all sales were at full adult prices (£258 in vat), net income would be £5.375m.

Should Celtic overcome Helsingborgs and reach the Champions League group stage, the club will return to a remarkably strong financial footing.

Just plain laziness Margaret….. Get your finger oot.

“We’ll survive very well. There will be no material impact on our business going forward.

    “We have a stand-alone strategy, a stand-alone financial plan.”

Rangers appear to be crumbling under mounting financial pressures and administration, possibly even liquidation are now genuine threats.

But Lawwell and club chairman Ian Bankier were quick yesterday to dispel the notion that the clubs are locked into what some might call an unholy alliance.

They are convinced Celtic are not financially dependent on a healthy Rangers and stress their own long-term plan would remain unaltered even if their greatest rivals go to the wall.

Perhaps ironically, they were responding to questions about Rangers’ woes on the day it was announced Celtic had taken a £7m hit in profits.

Their interim results for the six months up to the end of last December showed their pre-tax profit was only £180,000 against the previous year’s figure of £7.06m.

But although many believe the Old Firm need one another to prosper and warn of a downturn in the game’s finances if beleaguered Rangers are forced to their knees, Celtic dismissed those fears.

Asked if their own finances would suffer because fans might not buy into a one-horse race Lawwell said: “Not at all. I can tell you now that is not the case.

“We have a robust financial model we will continue. Our horizons are to dominate Scotland and compete successfully in a European context.

“Our focus and priority is always to optimise the opportunities for Celtic. Our debt is extremely manageable and maintaining our model and winning on the pitch is our focus.

“All we want to do is concentrate on taking our own club as far as we can and I wouldn’t see anything that may or may not happen with Rangers getting in the way of that.”

Lawwell’s view is shared by Bankier who said: “Of course we’re well placed to take advantage of anything that might happen.

“We’re going to be in better shape than them if their problems cause greater difficulties.”

Asked if the SPL’s sanction – a 10-point deduction from any club which enters administration – would be enough, Lawwell would only say: “It would be inappropriate to comment at this moment but we do have strong views on this.”

Just one word on the old fiscal policy – keeping the finances tight makes sense to take our very healthy club into the Euro Super League currently under construction.

ST, I know what happened to the Aiden McGeady money btw! ;)

  14. PS Am I right in thinkin we were deprived of a potential £60M CL cash in the last three years by the SFA hun cartel?

No easy to factor that into the accounts.

Only thing stopping our Club making and spending good cash in recent years is hunnery.

Margaret, I despair at times, I really do.

This oasis shouldnt be a forum for assimilated tims/frustrated huns.

As much as Peter Lawwell’s words didnt go as far as Mystic Meg proportions it should offer sceptics like yourself and your nemesis Sidney Tim some small bones of comfort.

Corporate responsibility a difficult enough concept to grasp for professionals in the field.

For laymen like you or I there are balance sheets that can be explained beyond reasonable doubt.

Like Snidey Tim, I think in all honesty, youre a rebel without a cause.

Just my opinion, which granted, isnt worth much at all in the grand scheme of things.

Dont get where youre coming from Margaret. Do yourself a favour and check out the balance sheet. Read Lawwells comments again then, with baited breath, look over your chipped shoulder at Der Hunnes. Now,the difficult part. Try to think about things logically.

Nope. Not proud of anything, pride is a negative emotion, very much like hate is.And i can’t bring myself to hate anything or anybody either – as far as i am concerned,it’s all self defeating, ultimately.

In relation to the football side of things,it’s Celtic over everything…however,in the context of Spanish football…Madrid Vs Barca? I cheer on Real, all day long…

Whom in the world has a problem with that?

Margaret, the only people who ask about chocolate bunnies at Easter are Protestants and children.

Just face it Mags, corporate responsibility is such an inalienable term to you it wouldnt matter even if Lawwell was personally spoon feeding you fiscal management for breakfast.

    Take 2.

Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell insists his club “don’t need Rangers” to flourish financially.

Rangers are awaiting the verdict of a long-running tax case that could place the future of the Ibrox club in doubt.

But Lawwell says the eventuality of their Old Firm rivals going bust “would have no material effect on Celtic”.

“We look after ourselves,” Lawwell told BBC Scotland. “We don’t rely on any other club. We are in a decent position, we’re very strong.”

Celtic’s interim financial results for the second half of 2011 showed a profit of £180,000 – significantly down from the £7m at the end of the previous year.

“I’m disappointed to look at the performance of Scottish teams in Europe and the effect that that has on co-efficient” said Peter Lawwell Celtic chief executive.

“Bank debt has been reduced by £2m to £7m.”

The Old Firm clubs had contrasting January transfer windows with Celtic able to preserve and strengthen their squad while Rangers sold top scorer Nikica Jelavic to Everton without signing a replacement.

Celtic lead reigning champions Rangers by four points in the Scottish Premier League and, unlike the Ibrox side, are still in both domestic cup competitions.

“Our aspirations and horizons are to dominate in Scotland but also beyond that; we want to compete at the highest level again in Europe,” said Lawwell.

“We have a stand-alone strategy, a stand-alone financial plan and a robustness hopefully that will take us through that.

“Times are pretty tough. I don’t think it’s appropriate for us to talk about any individual club, these things are hypothetical at the moment.

“I think we’ve a view, a very strong view on certain circumstances but we’ll only share that at the right time.

“In terms of Scottish football, I’m disappointed to look at the performance of Scottish teams in Europe and the effect that that has on co-efficient.

“I’m disappointed to see that financial constraints and problems in other nations as well.”

Earlier in the season, Celtic trailed in the league by 15 points and manager Neil Lennon alluded to a need for him to win the title in order to keep his job.

But Lawwell said: “That has never been said to Neil. We are absolutely delighted how he is performing, how he is developing as a football manager and as a man.

“I really, really enjoy working with him. He’s intelligent, he’s not only interested in the football side of the business but he’s interested in our strategy and other aspects of the business.

“He buys into what we’re doing here in terms of identifying players. He buys into the youth development side and I don’t there’ll be anyone else more suited to giving our youngsters a chance than Neil Lennon.

“We have built up a very strong squad. We’ve built up value in that squad. We’ve been able to keep our best players and at the same time, we’re performing on the field at the moment.

“We did embark on a strategy four or five years ago where we redirected investment into our recruitment, into our academy, into our facilities building Lennoxtown.

“It’s very, very early days but we’re beginning to see some green shoots of productivity from that in the players that we’ve identified and the kids that are beginning to come through.

So Mags, now that the easter bunny’s melted away what’s it to be next…..you up for tooth fairy?
