Wind of change set to blow through Lennoxtown

892

There appears to be nothing more than a desire to move-on behind Johan Mjallby’s decision to leave Celtic at the end of the season but it leaves the original four man coaching team of Neil Lennon, Alan Thompson, Mjallby and Garry Parker reduced down to two.  The management team needs to be rebuilt.

Assistants do more than just put the cones out and get players go through their paces.  They are an extra pair of eyes and ears, at the side of the field and in the dressing room.  When they are most effective, they are a source of learning, bringing improved techniques and ideas into the club, forcing the manager to reconsider established practices.

Strip some of the greats of their productive partners and they proved to be prosaic underachievers; Cough without Taylor was a sorry sight.  By contrast, Ferguson played the assistants’ game perfectly, swapping them every few years to enhance his stock with fresh flavour.

Alan Thompson was not directly replaced but irrespective of the speculation which constantly surrounds the club, a wind of change will blow through Lennoxtown this summer, filling the gaps in the original four man team.

If you’ve wondered about getting involved with some of the charity events surrounding the club there is a perfect opportunity coming up.  The Foundation is having a badge day at the Dundee United game on Sunday 11 May.  This is an important opportunity to anchor the ethos of the club to its roots by engaging thousands of Celtic fans in the simple act of buying a badge for charity.

All monies raised will go towards supporting those afflicted by homelessness in the Glasgow area.  I volunteered to help on the day and offered to put the word around, over 100 bucketeers are needed.  If you want to help, all you’ll need to do is turn up early for the game, wear a hi-vis vest and hold a bucket, but I can assure you, you’ll enjoy it.  Email the foundation with your name and phone number: cfcfvolunteer@celticfc.co.uk .

I see Wilson bumming up King again on the beeb website. One thing confusing me though:

“Dave King, the former Rangers director, has spoken of his intention to invest again, despite losing £20m that he put into the club under Sir David Murray’s ownership.”

Now, if he invested in the CLUB, and the club still exists (remember it was the “holding company” that went bust), then how could he have LOST the investment????

THE Ibrox club have turned to Merseyside public relations consultant Paul Tyrrell – a man who once accused of comparing prominent Liverpool fans to a genocidal army.

Public relations consultant Paul Tyrrell has joined Rangers

THE new spin doctor at Rangers was once accused of labelling a section of his own support the sporting equivalent of the notorious Khmer Rouge.

The Ibrox club have turned to Merseyside public relations consultant Paul Tyrrell to guide them through the turbulence of the next few months.

    Tyrrell, a former
communications boss at Liverpool and Everton, appears well qualified for his new job – his current clients include the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

He is also a consultant to BBC North in England and ironically Rangers have adopted a policy of
non-cooperation with the Beeb since last May.

Tyrrell’s first brief is to try to sell the club’s 120-day review to fans who have vowed to boycott the renewal of season tickets in protest at the unpopular board.

The review is expected to be published later today and the Union of Fans last night demanded it answer crucial questions on the future of the club or it will be dismissed as a “damp squib”.

Tyrrell, then working at Goodison, caused anger on Merseyside last year when a dossier was leaked in which he allegedly compared prominent Liverpool fans to
Cambodia’s genocidal army from the 1970s.

    It was claimed the
document was penned three years earlier by Tyrrell, then head of press at Anfield, at the height of antagonism between supporters and the unpopular regime led by Americans Tom Hicks and George Gillett.

But Tyrrell refused to be drawn yesterday and said: “Sorry. I never comment on anything I may or may not have written in the past.”

He added: “I am merely helping the club out with strategic communications on a consultancy basis over the next few months.

“I run my own consultancy and clients include BBC and the UFC. I have worked in the past for Man City,
Liverpool and Everton.”

Tyrrell’s appointment comes as umbrella group the Union of Fans laid out their expectations for chief Graham Wallace’s report.

A spokesman said: “We hope this review will not be more vague corporate speak from Mr Wallace. We want to see measurable progress and firm commitments on the huge investment required. Anything less will be a damp squib.”

It was quite obvious to me that your earlier post was not doubting MT and I was surprised that HT took that interpretation. I thought you responded well.

No clubs will be kicked out of European competition next season for breaking financial fair play rules, says Uefa president Michel Platini.

UEFA’s financial fair play (FFP) policy, designed to stop clubs spending more than they generate, comes into effect next season with a maximum penalty of exclusion from European competition for those failing to comply.

“In effect, the first decisions will be announced at the start of May,” Platini told Le Parisien newspaper in an interview published on its website. “But if you are expecting blood and tears, you will be disappointed. There will be some tough things but no exclusions from European competition.”

One of Rangers’ major shareholders has told BBC Scotland that the financial situation at Ibrox is “fragile”.

Rangers’ recent accounts were signed off for the next 12 months on the basis of an uplift in season ticket sales, but Sandy Easdale said indications were that sales were “slow”.

Ahead of the publication of the board’s business review, he urged “loyal” fans to show their support to the club.

Easdale also warned that Rangers would not survive a second administration.

The major shareholder, speaking exclusively to BBC Scotland, admitted that the situation was “fragile”.

“I would say that in 140 years, the club’s gone into administration once; I don’t think it would survive a second one”

    Sandy Easdale

    Rangers shareholder

“At the end of the day, the club is at a crossroads at the moment and a fragile position. It can either go forward with a strategic view, with a long-term view, steady as she goes, or be pulled apart in other directions.

“I don’t actually know the figures (for season ticket renewals) but I think there’s a couple of situations there; we’re a couple of weeks early. People are waiting for a report. At this moment in time, ticket sales are what I’d say are slow.”

Asked whether they would be in sufficient number in order to sustain Rangers in the short-term, Easdale said: “We’ve got all the numbers; me and [chief executive Graham Wallace] are confident and the board’s quite confident that we’ll meet those numbers.

“To answer the question, some of the fans will say when I answer it that, that it’s blackmail or we’re putting them into emotional blackmail.

“But I would say that, in 140 years, a lot of boards and directors came and went but there’s only been one club.

“If you’re loyal and you support the club, then come out and support the club. It doesn’t matter who’s running the club or who wants to run the club; the main thing is the loyal supporters need to come out, by a man, and stand by the club.

“That’s what the club’s been built on: loyalty.”

    Rangers fans protest at Ibrox

Asked whether supporters not renewing could run the risk of a second administration, Easdale replied: “That’s a difficult question. And it’s a question that I don’t want to need to answer or be in a position that this board would be forced into that situation.

“Again, I would say that in 140 years, the club’s gone into administration once; I don’t think it would survive a second one.

“So, I would ask every loyal Rangers fan, and I pick my words correctly in saying loyal Rangers fans, supports the club at this time and gives it a chance.

“We don’t want to go back to the dark days of administration. Everything’s a possibility and at the moment we’ve got to look on a positive as a board, taking it forward.

“At the moment, there is a lot of noise around the Trust; we don’t know the situation with the Trust.

“But, as from a board, it’s business as usual. We’ve got to keep going forward.”

Asked about the completion of Graham Wallace’s 120-day business review, and fans seeking clarity on a range of issues, Easdale continued: “I hope it answers all their [the fans’] questions; it answers our questions and it’s a clear indication where Graham and the board want to take the club.

“The content of which we hope’s enough, because obviously, I’m not going to hide behind it as usual: Stock Exchange reasons, price sensitivities, all these things are in the wider report.

“So, we’re kind of tied by the Stock Exchange in what we can say. As for me, I’d love to tell the fans all, but, the PLC board is tied by rules and regulations.”

Additionally, a senior source at Ibrox has told BBC Scotland he believes Rangers are “on a life-support machine”.

    Loyal is the key!
