Winners, fighters and a divine gamble

244

How many times do you wish players would just practice crossing the ball?  Set aside the low balls across the face of goal.  A good aerial cross needs enough pace to make it difficult for the keeper to pluck it out of the air, but not too much, it also needs to drop to allow an attacker to make contact.

Most of the poor crosses you see fail the test of pace, more often than not, they are blasted beyond control.  Notwithstanding Josip Juranovic’s waywardness last night, a failure to direct the ball carefully enough is less common.

When Tom Rogic crossed the ball as the clock hit 96 minutes last night, including the keeper, there were nine Ross County players in the box.  They had to contend with only three Celtic players: Liel Abada, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Anthony Ralston.

For the first time since our first away win of the campaign, at Aberdeen on 3 October, I watched those closing moments thinking the season was about to pivot.  Devastated by injuries and with a cup final to plan for, the manager rested Rogic, his remaining creative force, as well as left back, Greg Taylor.

If Ange Postecoglou wins his first trophy in Scotland on Sunday, his gamble will have paid off brilliantly, but goodness, what a gamble.

I doubt Tom practices crossing any more than the rest of them, his talent appears God given.  If so, a Divine Hand lifted the ball into an area for Anthony Ralston to attack. Heavily outnumbered, it should have been a no contest.

What happened next is the stuff of legend.  Anthony’s leap was astonishing.  His head met the ball 8’ off the ground.  Up early, he used his shoulders and neck to keep his head where it needed to be, for an instant, giving the impression he could levitate.  No Hindu divinity here, just athleticism.

Add your own adjective to this team: winners, fighters, determined, indefatigable.  On nights like this, they are all true.  Enjoy your Celtic.

it was indeed 5-0 but the man of the match was the st Mirren goalkeeper Dennis Connaghan. Could have been so much more.

  5. LET’S ALL DO THE HUDDLE

I guess this is my day for reminiscing about needles.

Around 1964, I was playing in the Scottish Amateur League against a team called Furnace in Argyllshire. The field was grass, grazed on by cows during the week, but had some gravel on it, presumably from a nearby quarry. It was pissing down with rain, and late in the second half, I was tackled heavily but cleanly by the opposition full back. I slid on my side for several feet, sustaining deep scratches on one leg from my knee to my butt from a mixture of gravel and cow manure.

Back then, there was no requirement for teams to have showers, and the ‘facilities’ consisted of a solitary outdoor rain barrel. The coach arranged for a lift to the hospital at Lochgilphead. I was still soaking wet in my strip when examined by the ER quack. He checked me out and said to the nurse, “Tetanus injection and Savlon scrub,” then left the room. The nurse, a very attractive young blonde, said “Get yourself ready. I’ll be back in a few minutes.” When she got back, I had rolled up my soaking wet tight cotton shirt sleeve with some difficulty. She said, “ What are you doing?” I said, “Getting ready for the tetanus shot.” She said, “You don’t get it in your arm.”

I said, “You’re kidding!” “No”, she said, “Assume the position.” So, it was keks down. I thought that was bad enough, but then she told me to lie down on my side. 4 more burly ladies entered the room and each held one of my arms and legs. Blondie then started scrubbing my leg with a nail brush dipped in a kidney dish with Savlon. I was howling, and they were going, “Och, don’t be a big baby, now.” My leg was on fire for days, and I still have some of that gravel, and some black ash from Plantation Park and Greenock High School in my other knee. I guess I’ll always carry around part of Scotland!

  10. My final word for the night, the only reason Ireland will impose restrictions is if the Hospitals cant cope with the numbers seeking Hospital treatment and that is a perfectly reasonable humane attitude.

That´s a great post. That is what happens. Ancell´s Babes at Motherwell were a force in scottish football and Ian McMillan was Mr Airdrie, talent and local allegiances come into play. I love the story of you celebrating the 4 goals in the 1965 semi final ! Not surprising when it was Joe McBride.

How prescient was Tony Benn’s observation- “there are two ways in which people are controlled – firstly frighten people, then demoralise them”.

I am absolutely a fan rather than a supporter but I do not like to hear criticism of an insidious nature on here. For example a poster here calling out Malky MacKay for being a racist. People playing the race card? A la Edmiston Drive? Malky was a Celtic player, scored against Rangers, even I know that.

    …………..

I am assuming that your last Paragraph was directed at ME ?

I didnt “call out” Malky MacKay for being SACKED as a Racist as YOU Posted, I merely asked a question about his alleged behaviour when he was a manager in England. So YOU have DELIBERATELY twisted my earlier Post about Mackay to suit YOUR Agenda.

Do you AFREE with MacKay when he wrongly claimed that 3,000 THREE THOUSAND Celtic supporters invaded the Ross County pitch ?

i havent read back too much on this Thread so far, but I noticed that at Least One other Poster, stated that MacKay WAS SACKED down south for RACIST and SEXIST Comments….so I was correct about MacKay…and I was also correct in disputing what Mackay claimed about the PHANTOM THREE THOUSAND Celtic supporters invading the Pitch…it was more like 50 or 60 fans from the videos and Pics that I have seen.

Finally, just because MacKay played for Celtic and scored One Goal v the Huns, does NOT….and SHOULD NOT make it okay for MacKay or any other EX Celtic player, to be a RACIST !

Maurice Johnston played very well for Celtic and scored many goals………HE is STILL a RAT in the eyes of the majority of the Celtic support, if not all of the support…..but YOU have probably decided to FORGET and FORGIVE Johnston….just because he was an EX Celtic player…I DON’T !

YOU shot yer mouth OFF in relation to a particular Poster a couple of days ago, DESPITE knowing NOTHING about him….HE quickly SHOT YOU DOWN, and made YOU look like a complete CHUMP……but here we are just Two days later and YOU are telling LIES about my Post regarding Malky MacKay.

YOU just do NOT learn….do you ?

While you were supporting St Mirren and the animals that are Athletico Madrid…I was supporting GLASGOW CELTIC !

YOU are now seated at the Chumps Table along with JHB, Lynch, Mitchie and one or two others.

  20. I will never slag off anyone for saying something SEXIST….as over the years I have told many Sexist Jokes…and I STILL do.

That is why I ONLY asked about MacKay being sacked for his RACIST Comments.

    ……………

His ” Reply” wasnt 100% respectful, as RIMTHETIM decided to have a go at me simply because I asked the Blog about Malky MacKay.

RIMTHETIM appears to hold the view that it does NOT Matter if you are a RACIST….as long as you played for Celtic many years ago.

    …………..

I attended the ” Game” against the Animals of Madrid in 1974 aged almost 19.

I was with my uncle in the middle of the Jungle that night.

At the time, and for ALL these years later I have ALWAYS commented on how it was a MIRACLE that not one Celtic supporter had ran on to the pitch that night and stiffen a couple of Madrid players.

I said to my uncle as we stood watching the THUGGERY….that “it will only take ONE Celtic fan to run onto the Pitch and thousands will follow” ?
