Winning against nearest rivals, Charlie Gallagher, Pablo

702

I don’t recall having seen us win the league against our direct competitors. Has it happened in the last 49 years? Yesterday’s results at Tynecastle and Pittodrie ensures that a point against Aberdeen on Sunday will be enough to confirm Celtic as 5-in-a-row champions. As it stands, a 17 goal win for Aberdeen would put us under pressure for the last two games of the season…..

This will be the fourth time in Scottish football history 5-in-a-row has been achieved and Celtic’s third. The last time we were here, Hay, Gemmell, Murdoch, McNeill, Johnstone, Wallace, Auld and Lennox did a lot of the heavy work, with youngsters like Macari, McGrain and Dalglish on the periphery of the team. It was a team which would soon embark on considerable change, which is at least one thing they have in comment with contemporary Celtic.

Another member of that Celtic team, Charlie Gallagher, left the club exactly 46 years ago today, after an extraordinary decade. Charlie will be on the blog tomorrow evening from around 7pm, to reminisce on that incredible era, answer questions and give an opinion or two. These are always great sessions, tune in and enjoy.

Five years ago today we lost Pablophanque, the first guy who said, “We need to bring Kano home”. Pablo was one of the few who made Celtic Quick News what it became in the early days. He made many friends here, who miss him still, and a profound impact on our community.

I can’t remember BTM having the number of positives that rd will leave

lg – absolutely stunning management of him – changed him into a man and one of the most important celts in the modern era because in the year of an ineffective strategy, he single handedly won us the league, the loss of which would have undone all the good jock stein did us

rogic – made him realise his quality could have a place in the spfhell

cg – let him make mistakes

broonie – brought him back knowing he wasn’t 100% but knowing that whatever he could give us would get us over the finish line (unless aberdeen score 25 goals)

    McG – improved no end

    KT !!!!!!!!!

PR – hope not too much damage has been done

I can’t remember a manager who failed to leave so many positives – mind you, MON left us up the Swanee financially. Can’t put my finger on why rd failed – plain ole out of his depth I suppose!

    Absolutely agree with that one.

Wee BGFC approached him in the Tesco in Coatbridge (while JR was still at Utd) and gave it big licks about why JR should sign for the Hoops.

I think Wee BGFC was pushing against an open door – JR was very up for it (and was laughing at getting badgered by a wean when out with his girlfriend buying the messages!!!)

Good, solid striker – knows his job, and does it well, unlike the combination of lightweights and diddies that couldn’t trap a bag of cement that we have bought recently.

JFH …. I like McGinn… but who would we drop to make way for him? I dont see him and SB being a good combination (roles would be too similar). So, for me, if he were to play, it has to be SB who is dropped, but I know that is not a popular view on here. Otherwise, no point signing him, if we aren’t going to play him.

    Hail Hail friend

Stokes is a tricky one. I’d not be gutted if the next manager said Stokes is my man to partner Griffiths and the club came out and backed him 100%.

He needs that but it is unlikely to happen. He has an incredible goal ratio but not doing it at Hibs.. So wonder if he’s another mispent talent?

  15. Joe Filippis Haircut on

MIKE IN TORONTO. Broonie is getting on a bit and will struggle to play the amount of games a Celtic first team player will be required to play in a season. So Mc Ginn in my opinion would be an ideal back up and eventualy a good replacement for Broonie.H.H.

Reading the debate about Anthony Stokes reminded me of this recent quote from MoN

“It’s important that he’s back playing again,” said O’Neill, “Anthony won’t mind me saying ‘Anthony is Anthony’ – he’s a talented player and I would say possibly (one of the) three laziest players I’ve ever seen. Lazily talented or talented lazily. I’m never sure which way it goes.

“I love him to death, he is a great character. Seriously, I’m not saying when I pare down the squad that he is going to make it but at least he is back playing again,”

Did you notice the one Celtic supporter on the field looking all around the Celtic support as if searching for family or friends in the crowd? They must all be proud of your Kieran. That jersey never shrunk for you, it was a perfect fit and long may it be so. Congratulations on being Young player of the year. Likewise to you Griff and thanks for pulling us out of a hole so often this season.

TBJ … I would see McGinn as a replacement for Scott Brown, but not for Biton … I think NB is the best passer we have …. but he needs players to be making the runs for him to pass to … new coach, new philosophy, and I think NB would be a star for us ….

  26. Turkeybhoy on 2nd May 2016 2:24 pm

    NEGANON2 on 2ND MAY 2016 11:56 AM

Turkeybhoy Celtic are more reliant on turnstile fodder than just about any other major club. And the money is not invested in the team. We are told it’s now reinvested in the club. Like big bonuses paid for failure.

“It might be “Failure” to a whingeing brat like you to win, I think,11 out of the last 16 League Titles, and that’s with the other mob cheating, to do well in Europe around 50% of the time, but it should not to REAL Celtic supporters. We invest plenty of money we can afford into the team. Like every other team on the planet, some wins, some losses.

It shows me your grasp of football economics if you think the “Gate money” goes anywhere near financing a club like Celtic.

More and more are beginning to see you for what you are. A prat with a hatred for PL. It has, if you read your many posts per day, become an unhealthy obsession with you now. A few bottom lickers still pander to your rants, but they are getting fewer.

You, and your kind, are the biggest problem our club has at this time. Real Celtic fans have endured much worse Boards than this. They pass, their time goes, but you want to drag the club into financial ruin for your short sighted view of getting rid of PL.

It will not pass as long as I am on the blog unanswered”.

    Well said Turkeybhoy! – I agree 100%

We are subjected incessantly to this guy’s malicious drivel and, as you have rightly pointed out, he is feted by a clutch of arse-licking sycophants who know as little about the running of a football club as he does!

Pl clearly dropped the ball with the appointment of RD – it was a failed experiment and one that he has to take the rap for, however he has broad shoulders and is also well paid to take the stick.

What he does not deserve and what is entirely unacceptable, is the personal abuse directed at him from so-called Celtic supporters. Most of this is straight out of the “Hun Handbook” and has no place on a Celtic site amongst REAL Celtic supporters.

The plethora of condemnation surrounding his recent visit the dressing room inferred without foundation that he was interfering in team matters whilst he was there for a completely different reason. But then why let the facts get in the way of a negative agenda.

We were, of course, also treated today to a raft of negative spin on the good news of the Dafabet sponsorship, by the usual suspects, rather than accept it as a real positive for the club in difficult financial times and one which the Forces of Darkness would give their eye teeth for!

Add to that today’s attacks on the club captain, who incidentally would run through a brick wall for Celtic, and you have a full suite!

However even Neganon’s pathetic ramblings pale into insignificance compared to the sick rants of his “sidekick” from Sydney.

This man conducts a constant torrent of malicious personal abuse at PL during which he recently referred to PL as “scum”. He also had the gall to advise us that he knows what every Celtic supporter wants. This from someone who watches our club on TV – 10500 miles away!

Add to this his recent comments that our host, P67, is in the pay of PL and you get either the true measure of a ratbag or someone in serious need of medical advice.

I therefore thoroughly endorse Turkeybhoy’s comments that people of this ilk are the biggest drawback our club faces at this time.

We all know that R****** died in 2012, however it is abundantly clear that “the Huns” did not die and, barring further pressing financial issues, will be infesting every SPFL ground next season.

We should be out there – facing them down – not turning our backs on Celtic.

If ever there was a time to stick by our club it is now.

Don’t let the MSM win with their “divide and conquer” strategy.

In the final analysis we all have the right to withdraw our financial support for the club. However if you can’t bring yourself to support the club please go quietly and without giving the enemy the ammunition they want to attack us.
