Winning against nearest rivals, Charlie Gallagher, Pablo

702

I don’t recall having seen us win the league against our direct competitors. Has it happened in the last 49 years? Yesterday’s results at Tynecastle and Pittodrie ensures that a point against Aberdeen on Sunday will be enough to confirm Celtic as 5-in-a-row champions. As it stands, a 17 goal win for Aberdeen would put us under pressure for the last two games of the season…..

This will be the fourth time in Scottish football history 5-in-a-row has been achieved and Celtic’s third. The last time we were here, Hay, Gemmell, Murdoch, McNeill, Johnstone, Wallace, Auld and Lennox did a lot of the heavy work, with youngsters like Macari, McGrain and Dalglish on the periphery of the team. It was a team which would soon embark on considerable change, which is at least one thing they have in comment with contemporary Celtic.

Another member of that Celtic team, Charlie Gallagher, left the club exactly 46 years ago today, after an extraordinary decade. Charlie will be on the blog tomorrow evening from around 7pm, to reminisce on that incredible era, answer questions and give an opinion or two. These are always great sessions, tune in and enjoy.

Five years ago today we lost Pablophanque, the first guy who said, “We need to bring Kano home”. Pablo was one of the few who made Celtic Quick News what it became in the early days. He made many friends here, who miss him still, and a profound impact on our community.

    Stokesy?

No chance. He must be booted out with the other chumps and dossers.

  2. I watched Craig Bryson when he played Junior. Tidy player who always had time and space.

I think he has been injured for some months and is playing himself back in.

Worth keeping an eye on imo.

  3. The Donald,

Did I come across a post from you a week or so ago when you mentioned Mossend?

I am Mossend born and bred.

I just wondered why you chose mention Mossend; do you have a connection to Mossend?

    Fair enough!

If all the issues you have outlined are making you unhappy don’t go – you have every right to withdraw your support as I mentioned.

However I think that the fall-off in attendances is principally down to poor team performances as opposed to the range of issues which you proffered.

I choose to keep going for the reasons I outlined.

The proof of the pudding will be the ST take-up.

Let’s see how that pans out

My principal point was the nature of the abuse which I respectfully suggest has not been in keeping with what I consider to be in the true traditions of Celtic people.

Perhaps you could share with me the meaning of “old firm ism”?

    Just to set that straight.

Lawwell and Park in total control of signing players.

Or offering the manager two or three then he has to choose.

Martin O’Neill was the only man who had full say in proceedings.

Nolan? must be Steven Nolan, he’s as fit as the heavy-hipped Hibs goalie. The announcement from Winning Captains, was it the Dafqbet sponsorship, or something regarding Res12/SFA/Sevco?

    Thanks for your courteous reply

My use of Od firm ism. Relates to Lawwell and co ‘s blatant support of reinvigorating ‘old Firm’ thinking when for most Celtic fans that died with Rangers. On The one hand PL tells us that Celtic strategy is not dependent or defined by Rangers – then he bleats about their absence costing us £10m/ year.

The Celtic Turnover is reducing from £70m+ to £50+ due to on the park failure yet Lawwell gets bonus that exceeds his contractual untitlement?

A CEO of a £50m business should never take £1m/ year

Nor should transfer dealings involve his son if he wants to be seen to be beyond reproach

  10. Terryk you are complaining about the nature of the abuse on the blog. Have you read your own and turkeybhoys posts?

They are utterly abusinve, accuse those who disagree with you as Huns and that, somewhat bizarrely it’s all our fault for pointing out the disasterous boardroom performance.

    Terry,

The fall off in attendances is about two things.

Primarily,Celtic fans are sickened of being cheated for years and years of a rigged Masonic farce that passes for Scottish football

Secondly,we have a board who sit back allowing this nonsense to continue.

Instead of grinding this scum cheats into the ground we appointed a hapless,no clue manager who allowed a pathetic Huns team to humiliate us.

    That sickens me.

  13. Terry K

    Don’t you get it daftie.

Everyone is an armchair quarterback on here. All with the great range of skills and experience needed to deal with the range of issues which face a CEO of a big club in a declining wee market.

Don’t come on here calling people out for negativity.

All the experts on here on here don’t just abuse those running the club they are top notch at coming up with real credible sustainable solutions.

Of course it is appalling with the plethora of amazing sponsorship offers that were pouring in for our shirts that our nasty board chose the evils of drink and gambling over all those other top brands which were itching to pay to be on a celtic shirt. How dare you suggest otherwise.

I have to laugh Bhoys on here who couldnt run a charity stall at a car boot sale bad mouthing Peter Lawwell the big man is an asset to our club and once again pulls in the biggest sponsorship deal in the clubs history.Yes he gets paid a lot but top business men normaly are well rewarded.I think those who are wishing he would leave should take into consideration you often dont know what you have until its gone.I also believe the appointment of Ronny was not a failure two league titles and a league cup isnt to bad for a failure. So let big Peter get on with his job and find our next manager. H.H.

If as you state MON had total control of transfers are you suggesting that took us to a positive place ?

To my mind it nearly took the club under. We had 2 share issues in a five year period and despite the marketability of Seville and Larsson we won just 3 leagues from 5 and 5 trophies from 9 in that period with an unsustainable spend , even with full stadiums back then.

tim horton … I can see why you would say that …. of late, I have said that about him and other players myself …. but then I think back to most of those players when they started with us …. and most of them didn’t start out that way …. we seem to be slowing players down!

NB can see a pass that few others in the team can … we just need to get the right coach and right system, and he will be a star …

I really thought RD was the coach to do that … but, hopefully the next coach will bring out NB’s talent, along with several other players who have been underperforming for us of late.

As I recall, when the club announced a new sponsor,it was traditional that PL would trumpet to the assembled media just how much it was worth to the club.

The last few occasions, our marketing/financial/PR/footballing et al genius has kinda forgot to mention that subject.

    Any idea why?

  21. Good to see the official Hibernian Supporters Club stopping at Kerrydale St en route to Hampden on 21st. I am sure Celtic would have given the old Hibernian Brake Clubs a warm welcome if similar had happened back in the days of Hibs last cup win had it been vs Rangers and not Celtic. Back then.

Still hopefully it will be an omen for them as their last scottish cup final win was at Celtic Park.

  22. Celtic sign up to the biggest shirt sponsorship deal in Scottish Football history since the last biggest shirt sponsorship deal in Scottish Football history.

    Ok.Martin O’Neill was a failure.

He lifted our club from utter depression and rewarded us with a treble.

    He spent big cash.So what?

A club the size of Celtic should easily be able to take a bit of debt on and thrive.

Lawwell is getting 20 grand a week overseeing utter failure.

  24. BMCW

Not sure on that ? Usually it would be agreed between sponsor and club what to announce.

Often the figure quoted would be over the term of the deal ( number of seasons etc) and include maximum bonuses. Eg for league or champs league or cup wins etc

It was always tricky to put an exact number on it. but no idea why no mention of it recently.

I agree MON era was very positive in 3 or 4 seasons on the park despite not delivering the trophies our spend might have.

His legacy was dire and although debt is acceptable, it was unsustainable levels of debt with no obvious revenue upsides which meant we had to go to the well and allow our two or three major shareholders are greater grip back then.

MON legacy was poor. I was one of the few at Artmedia ! Demotivated old guard etc that WGS rebuilt with amazing speed was to his great credit despite the pervading negativity.
