Winning against nearest rivals, Charlie Gallagher, Pablo

702

I don’t recall having seen us win the league against our direct competitors. Has it happened in the last 49 years? Yesterday’s results at Tynecastle and Pittodrie ensures that a point against Aberdeen on Sunday will be enough to confirm Celtic as 5-in-a-row champions. As it stands, a 17 goal win for Aberdeen would put us under pressure for the last two games of the season…..

This will be the fourth time in Scottish football history 5-in-a-row has been achieved and Celtic’s third. The last time we were here, Hay, Gemmell, Murdoch, McNeill, Johnstone, Wallace, Auld and Lennox did a lot of the heavy work, with youngsters like Macari, McGrain and Dalglish on the periphery of the team. It was a team which would soon embark on considerable change, which is at least one thing they have in comment with contemporary Celtic.

Another member of that Celtic team, Charlie Gallagher, left the club exactly 46 years ago today, after an extraordinary decade. Charlie will be on the blog tomorrow evening from around 7pm, to reminisce on that incredible era, answer questions and give an opinion or two. These are always great sessions, tune in and enjoy.

Five years ago today we lost Pablophanque, the first guy who said, “We need to bring Kano home”. Pablo was one of the few who made Celtic Quick News what it became in the early days. He made many friends here, who miss him still, and a profound impact on our community.

    So, you are Brendan Rodgers.

You are offered your old job at Swansea City, but at the same time you are also offered the Celtic job.

    What to do?

    HH!!

Don’t go online as supporters of both teams don’t seem to want you.

Listening to his interview on SSN earlier he seemed open to the prospect of managing us and didn’t rule it out (or in)

Meanwhile, breaking news from Parkhead – evil CEO (Cruel Empirical Overlord) Peter Lawwell is in negotiations with the Antichrist to announce the coming of the apocalypse after the unfurling of the league flag, opening day in August.

Current details unclear but it’s believed head cheese – His Satanic Majesty himself – may also be in attendance, taking the day off from heating PL’s driveway from beneath with his fiery breath.

    Burnley78-

Martin O’Neill did not nearly take Celtic to the brink of bankruptcy.

He wasn’t exactly throwing wads of cash about during his time as manager.

He took in £6 million for the mercenary Viduka and spent the same sum on Chris Sutton.

    That’s good business I’d say.

He had the imagination to pluck a striker from hibs for £80000 (agathe) and convert him to right wing back and put him right into the team.

How many guys did Martin O’Neill sign for above £2.5 million? I can think only of Sutton (with the Viduka money), valgaeren and Hartson.

He got the best out of guys who had been under performing at the club – Petta, lambert, petrov and Mjallby.

Oh and he picked up Ramon vega on a free too. What a difference that guy made to the treble run-in in 2001.

The revisionist caricature of Martin O’Neill as a guy who only succeeded by dint of spending huge wads of cash and who nearly bust the club in the process is risible.

He left the club with 57000 season ticket holders and it’s highest standing in Europe for over 30 years. We are light years from that now.

Martin O’Neill didn’t bankrupt Celtic. A CEO who presides over dwindling attendances and repeated substantial financial losses in the transfer market, failed managerial appointments etc while taking £1 million a year out of a sub-£50 million a year turnover business – that’s a greater threat to bankruptcy than Martin oneill ever was.

  4. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Regarding Mikael Lustig’s fitness or lack of it this season.

I rean an article on newsnow Celtic , last summer, where Mikael said it would take him a year from the operation on his hip he had in 2015, to be fully fit. This might explain why he has struggled so much this season.

On the defensive midfielder situation. Darnell Fisher was signed as a midfielder but moved to right back in the youth team as they were short of players for that position. maybe he could play defensive midfield. He may not be the tallest but is not scared to tackle and get stuck in . He’s not the tallest but could do a job in midfield for us.

Off to see some real fitba, Rutherglen glencairn against Clydebank . No messing about and rolling about by players in the Juniors.

  5. Joe Filippis Haircut on

Well as most managers like money and status I believe most would go for Swansea as the EPL is the land of milk and honey while Celtic are a big fish being restricted in a small pond. H.H.

    “Thanks for your courteous reply

My use of Od firm ism. Relates to Lawwell and co ‘s blatant support of reinvigorating ‘old Firm’ thinking when for most Celtic fans that died with Rangers. On The one hand PL tells us that Celtic strategy is not dependent or defined by Rangers – then he bleats about their absence costing us £10m/ year.

The Celtic Turnover is reducing from £70m+ to £50+ due to on the park failure yet Lawwell gets bonus that exceeds his contractual untitlement?

A CEO of a £50m business should never take £1m/ year

Nor should transfer dealings involve his son if he wants to be seen to be beyond reproach”.

My friend in Celtic – I actually agree with a lot of what you say above.

The remuneration in question is, in my view, disproportionate to turnover and I think you have a valid point on the potential “nepotism” issue.

I also agree with your comments that the so called “Old Firm” died with RFC (RIP).

I would also add that it would have been my preference never to see “new them”.

However I am a realist and the entity in question were never going to simply “evaporate”.

I have the misfortine to be reminded of this as I live close to The Death Star and have to suffer them parking nearby (so many cars, so little saliva!).

Where I part company is on your suggestion that PL or the board in some way “invigorated” the old firm situation.

There is an old saying I have lived by and used when required – it is:

“We must learn to suffer what we cannot evade”.

We cannot evade “Them” – I am a realist – I see them every fortnight or so.

Nothing PL or the board could do could stop an eventual Sevco presence in the SPFL.

Thankfully it was delayed a while by the royal humping they got at the hands of Motherwel however the presence of what is left was always going to be here eventually.

Consequently I do not consider that PL or the board “invogorated” this – just took a realistic view.

I fear that many of our fellow Celts (especially many on CQN) simply wished them gone for good when that was never really going to happen.

Let’s agree to differ on that one if we must.

    TK.

    Martin O’Neill’s legacy was dire?

    Eh?

He brought some of the greatest players to Celtic Park in manys a year.

A good few quid was spent? So what?

Nothing better that putting the Huns properly in their place.

He faced cheating galore. As did Strachan and Lennon.

None of our recent managers with the exception of Ronny can be properly assessed because of the cheating.

Also I don’t recall seeing evidence of the “aiding and abetting” to which you refer.

What I do recall is his comment at the last AGM where he said: “When they come up, (and changed it to) – if they come up” – to much mirth in the room.

I am not convinced that he has given any solid evidence that he wanted them in the SPFL.
