Winning or living within your means

83

Alistair Johnston concluded Celtic players’ international commitments in the early hours of this morning (UK time) with no adverse injury news across the two weeks.  After tomorrow, the squad will scarcely have a proper training session until February.  There will be tired limbs, tired minds and a few knocks to deal with.  That’s the price of success and it is what the club prepares for.

Love the feedback across the city to news that a man who was a scout this time last year, then became head of recruitment, is now director of football, a role which has remained vacant since April 2023, because no suitable candidate was prepared to accept the position.

The 39-year-old Belgian gave what sounded like a banal platitude in the statement accompanying the announcement, but is more insightful than it appears.  “Winning is all that matters at this club”.

That’s the problem right there.  If winning is everything, living within your means is nowhere.  No football club in the game needs to park the ‘winning is everything’ chat for a few years more than Newco.

  1. Morning all – Brugge will be a tough game, following a likely bruising encounter at Tynecastle.

    Challenging times indeed.

  2. I think AJ contract extension will get announced before Saturday, hope he’s ok for Saturday, meanwhile Scotland have got Tony Ralston fit if required

The promotion over at Ibrox reminds me of a cameo from The Great Escape which wasn’t included in the film script.

Big X (Roger Bushell in real life) fell into a deep depression in 1943 just before the escape, 3 years after being shot down as a Squadron Leader.

Turned out the cause was another Squadron Leader arriving at the camp.

When Bushell knew him three years earlier … the guy was a MECHANIC !

Desperate times and a lack of warm bodies can spawn rapid promotions.

  4. An interesting article, Paul.

Even so, I am not sure I agree with this `There will be tired limbs,`.

I know we are talking of fine margins, but professional footballers’ fitness levels enables a much shorter recovery time than would be the case for `normal `folk involved in `normal` activities.

If only we could park the ‘newco’ chat…….

  6. Apologies if posted before but Nicolas Kuhn’s agent, Christian Nerlinger said this yesterday. An interesting insight into the thinking of agents of players like Nic, even more topical given the appointment at Ibrox and Berlinger being an ex-Ger:

“The speculation is not an issue for us. We have found a home for Nicolas at Celtic. We are not, never, walking out on Celtic without being together with the club because this success story was created by Celtic.

“I know from my time at Rangers it was very hard to get something out of the television rights, so of course they need to find these success stories – identify a player, buy him for £3million and sell him for £20-£25million – but we will do everything together with the club.”

“We are very grateful for how Brendan Rodgers developed the player.

“Nicolas feels the power of this club. I was in the stadium against RB Leipzig and you see the quality of the team. I know that Nicolas has total confidence in Brendan Rodgers in developing him and making him a better player, and for me as a business partner I have total trust in Michael (Nicholson, Celtic CEO) so we will take this step by step.

“Perhaps at some point there will be movement, but we will not pressurise things. It’s a massive season and we are really relaxed. We are just happy that Nicolas is at the right point, at the right time with the right manager who develops him. We are really grateful for that.

“It’s a good team. He is enjoying the philosophy of the manager and is enjoying Glasgow. We are enjoying the kind of things that are happening with Celtic and for me he is just at the right point with the right people He feels totally comfortable. We are more than happy with him at Celtic but we will always work and cooperate with Celtic about what is the next step. It’s a very exciting time.”

    Translated for the Scottish media:

Kuhn unhappy and agent says he is being treated terribly and wants to leave.

Lets hope thats what they get twisted about, instead of worrying why an ex-player sees us as a much better place for his client.

  9. and for me as a business partner I have total trust in Michael (Nicholson, Celtic CEO) so we will take this step by step.

You said to me recently that you had yet to have an explanation of the development model that made sense to you, I hope this makes it a bit clearer for you.

Nerlinger just added to the Banned List…….

    —–

    Which one?

FF list or the Agents Union one?

    Respectful, humble, collaborative, stable.

Guy will never make it as an agent.

BTW – I think Mr Nerlinger is already on the list.

£25k per week to sit on a sofa with your leg up resting your jigsaw puzzle of a knee … will do it every time.

Have you any idea how much it costs to heat a driveway ?!!

And with no winter heating allowance either !

  15. MAJESTIC HARSTON, MY Favourite player ,that’s a hard one ,I started to watch Celtic at 9 yrsold ,getting punted over the turnstiles, in the fifties, Charlie Tully ,Bobby Evans,Bobby Collins ,The sixties, Jimmy Jonstone ,Bobby Murdoch ,Billy McNeil,The Seventies Tommy Burns,Roy Aitken,Mo Johnson,

  16. If only Ibrox ‘had the Latin’ then Aye Ready would be “In Omnia Paratus” – living within means would be “Vive Ut Vivas”, but probably most apt of all – Omnia Causa Fiunt – “everything happens for a reason” HH

  17. The lad at R2ngers has had 2 promotions in a year?

Hope he drives carefully as he might career off the road…….

  18. RE the Larsson range, mentioned by Bada Bing earlier, I think it is a good idea as it will help make the narrative as Larsson of Celtic not Larsson of Feyenoord, Barcelona or Helsingborg, We remember him with fond memories and hope he remembers us. I am sure Henrik will be getting a cut.

Not only that but it sends good messages to our foreign legions. Indeed, AJ actually told the Canadian media all about the magic reception Larsson was given at a recent event, Even Kuhns agent Nerlinger was full of praise to the fans and the club. The fact we still revere our ex-players and treat them well reflects on our club

Henrik was a great player and it was a pleasure to see him play.

Before anybody says, I do have a signed Larsson Shirt and I am happy to see that the going rate is £500.

  19. CELTIC40ME @ 1:55 PM,

“You said to me recently that you had yet to have an explanation of the development model that made sense to you, I hope this makes it a bit clearer for you.”

    Did I!?

    Apologies, don’t remember that.

Christian Nerlinger’s words were very welcome and illuminating but didn’t really give me a better understanding of our development model – the refined development model for me is first class and I have a reasonable grasp of it.

    Did you see Scotland U19 0 – 0 France U19 yesterday?

Five Celts involved, three starters and two substitutes

    Pretty impressive eh!

It’s always struck me that we have been under represented at NT U19 and U21 level

However that seems to have changed, wonder why? The new manager or our good showing in the UCL U19s, Celtic B?

    Maybe a bit of both.

    Hail Hail
